The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) and Al Ain City Municipality (AAM), in partnership with the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), are proud to announce the third edition of the International Conference on Engineering Geophysics (ICEG). This third edition will be held on November 15–18, 2015, and on the grounds of the UAEU in the Conference Auditorium of the Crescent Building.

The success of the first and second ICEGs is reflected by the number of participants and the great interest shown by and feedback from both local authorities and the international geocommunity working with geophysical methods applied to engineering, environmental, archaeological, geotechnical, and forensic problems. Overwhelming encouragement from this community has led to the third in the series and the decision to extend the fields of interest to a wider range of near-surface-related specialties including groundwater, time-lapse, security, seismicity, and geothermal, to name a few options. Beyond this 2015 event, this world-class series will be broadened to allow sharing of the event with other regional partners with equivalent enthusiasm for the application of geophysics to near-surface problems.

The United Arab Emirates is building a sustainable, balanced, and diversified economy to ensure stability and prosperity through innovation and excellence as priorities. This conference has been designed and operated with those attributes and guidelines as drivers. Those priorities speak to social responsibility and strongly signal the need for effective and technically sound engineering geophysics supporting regional growth. Therefore, the conscientious and rigorous application of engineering geophysics has become mandatory prior to approval of any construction project in Abu Dhabi Emirate.

The objectives of the ICEG 2015 are to concentrate on global innovation, creativity, advances, and new approaches in the field of engineering/environmental geophysics and in related fields. In addition to the core engineering/environmental and geotechnical focuses of this coming event, special sessions will be held in related applications to archaeology, energy, and forensic geophysics. In addition, international experts at the very cutting edge of their science or engineering will be delivering keynote presentations on their latest research, experiences, and future goals for engineering/environmental geophysics and raising public awareness on the critical role of near-surface geophysics.

Submission Guidelines & Topics The Technical Committee invites submissions via the SEG Web site of Extended Abstracts, four (4) pages in length (including figures and references,) under the following topics:

1. Engineering geophysical applications for civil and industrial construction domains 2. Environmental geophysics applications and natural hazards 3. Archeogeophysics 4. Engineering geophysics application for the energy industry 5. Hydrogeophysics — groundwater and shallow-water structures and characterization 6. Engineering geology – ground stability, material properties, site response, coastal/sedimentation, weathered

Layer/stratigraphy/variability, etc. 7. Airborne geophysics 8. New approaches and data processing 9. Near-surface geophysics for forensic applications 10. Advanced field technologies Important: Submission of abstracts less than the required number of pages will be requested for resubmission as a four-page Extended Abstract for consideration by the Technical Program Committee.

Who should attend? This wil l be an outstanding venue and oppor tunity to explore and become acquainted with the many applications of near-sur face geophysics in this rapidly developing region. The mixture of academia, research, government, and industr y attendees wil l provide the

Organizing Committee Dr. Ahmed Ali Murad (chair), UAEU; Eng. Abdulla Al-Derei (vice chair), Al-Ain City Municipality; Prof. Haydar Baker, UAEU; Ghalia Al Ahbabi, UAEU; Mohammed Shames Al Naimi, UAEU; Abla Al Kaabi, UAEU; Eng. f lavor, diversi ty, and challenges of regional problems as well as insights into problems and solutions from other areas around the globe. This is must -at tend meeting for those in industr y looking for business development oppor tunit ies in this very active and rapidly developing region. I t is also an oppor tunity for, researchers looking for those truly unique challenges in which ground stabil i ty, infrastructure, and characterization cross paths with thousands of years of history and cultural development, where the crossroads of many mil lennium of civi l izations are par t of everyday engineering problems. Academic and personal growth through information exchange and cult ivation of collaborative relationships wil l no doubt be a principal underpinning that al l those that attend wil l benefi t from.

SEG DISC Course by Öz Yilmaz Date: 14 November 2015 Öz Yilmaz will be delivering a full day course, “Engineering Seismology: With Applications to Geotechnical Engineering.”

The near surface is the subject of all three branches of seismology — earthquake seismology, exploration seismology, and engineering seismology. The difference is not just a matter of scale but also the nature of seismic wave propagation. The narrow scope of engineering seismology includes its application to geotechnical site investigations and seismic microzonation to determine soil amplification and liquefaction susceptibility within a municipal area to estimate the

earthquake risk. The broad scope of engineering seismology also includes its application to groundwater exploration, coal and mineral exploration, geothermal exploration, and investigations of historical buildings and archaeological sites. This course is devoted to application of the seismic method to delineate the near-surface geology primarily for geotechnical remediation of the soil column for civil engineering structures. Nevertheless, the course also includes case studies for the broader scope of engineering seismology.

Summary The following topics will be addressed in this course:

• seismic waves: body waves, surface waves, the dispersion spectrum, and rayleigh-wave dispersion • seismic modeling of the soil column: p-wave velocity estimation, shallow seismic imaging, s-wave velocity estimation, borehole velocity measurements, and correlation of seismic velocities with geotechnical borehole data • site characterization: five case studies • landslide investigations: hydroelectric dam project site, refinery project site, and residential housing project site • active fault investigations: nuclear power plant project, refinery project, and subsea road tunnel project • seismic microzonation: refraction seismic survey and reflection seismic survey • geophysical investigations of

historic buildings: the Great Church of St. Sophia, the Mosque of Sultan Mehmet, the Church of the Holy Savior in Chora, and the Bridge of Emperor Justinianus • exploration of earth resources: groundwater exploration, coal exploration, mineral exploration, and geothermal exploration
