Whereas predecessor Jann Stuckey was Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, Ms Jones has the added responsibility of education in Premier Palaszczuk’s streamlined Cabinet.
Gold Coast Tourism chairman Paul Donovan said he wanted the Government to help deliver the Coast’s destination management plan which aims to double overnight visitor expenditure to $7 billion by 2020.
The plan includes a newsurf museum, man-made dive attraction and light and heavy rail extensions.
He said he did not believeMs Jones would have ‘too much on her plate’ to
dedicate enough time and energy to tourism.
“If you want to get something done, give it to a busy person,” he said.
Bob East, CEO of accommodation giant Mantra, said most tourists travelled to the Gold Coast by car and better roads were needed to ease congestion.
He said the Governmentalso needed to make a ‘quick decision’ on the proposed Gold Coast cruise ship terminal and deliver Brisbane’s Queens Wharf redevelopment.
