17th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
JULY 29th/30th 2017
Homes for refugees and a remarkable story….. Anna Reid is chair of NetworX—the local charity that seeks to co-ordinate help for refugees in the Eastbourne area. Anna says: ‘We now have three Christian folk who have offered their second houses to refugees. Perhaps there are others considering it. They could talk to people who have done it for the nitty gritty info. Nobody unknown would be placed in a home—only people for whom we could be a guarantor would be housed.’ One Syrian family, living in a basement room, were recently faced with a stark choice: Pack your bags today and move to Birmingham or be on the streets’. Anna argued with the authorities but to no avail. The family were beginning to settle in Eastbourne and make friends. Their son, traumatised by witnessing things no child should see was receiving counselling and a school place had been found. The husband is a piano tuner and the wife had to phone to cancel a tuning appointment, giving the reason why. The people needing their piano tuned had just attend the NetworX AGM and also had just been gifted a second home which they were happy to offer for the time being, allowing other options to be explored. A quick phone call to Anna to confirm the story and, before the day was out they were packing , not to go to Birmingham but into a new (albeit temporary home). To contact Anna at [email protected]. If you can help at all.

CATENIANS SPONSORING GOOD CITIZENS AT ST THOMAS A BECKET: the presentation of these awards, sponsored by Eastbourne Catenians, was timed by Head Teacher Rachel Turner to take place immediately after the feast day Mass, celebrated by Fr Gerard. The selected pupils were Nathaniel Osborne-Walker from the Infants School and Erin Todd from the Junior School. Each child received the books they had selected, a framed Certificate, as well as a beautiful silver cup inscribed with their name (which is displayed in the respective school for all to see) from Circle President Mike Woods.
