THE LATE FORBES HUNTER BLAIR

It was with deep regret that we announced the death of this gentleman, and as the event has excited much public interest in this place, the few following particulars may not be unacceptable to our readers. Mr Hunter Blair was the fifth son of the late Sir James Hunter Blair, and of Jane Blair, heiress of the estate of Dunskey, in Wigtownshire. He was born in 1781. After going through the usual course of education at the High School and University of this city, he became a partner in the well-known banking house established by the late Sir Wm. Forbes and James Hunter Blair. He continued his connection with this establishment till the decease of his immediate elder brother, James Hunter Blair, M.P. for Wigtownshire

Page 18: 1833 - Robert Wells' Web Pagesrjw-data.info/DGC s/1833.pdf · 1833 Dumfries & Galloway Courier Birth, Marriage and Death Notices Transcribed by Diana Henry and Robert Wells 1st January

in the year 1822, he succeeded to the estate of Dunskey in that county. Since that time he has chiefly resided in the country, though he paid occasional visits to his native city. He was induced, at the instance of a numerous and respectable requisition of the inhabitants, to offer himself as a candidate for the representation of Edinburgh in the present Parliament, and although the result of his canvass was unsuccessful, we believe we may say, without fear of contradiction, that his character was viewed with the highest approbation and respect, even by those who voted against him. In a place where that character was so well known, it may appear superfluous to enlarge on his merits, intellectual and moral. But even the feelings of friendship will scarcely be accused of partiality in saying that his understanding was sound and cultivated – his knowledge of business extensive – and his mode of conducting it liberal and accurate. When we turn to his moral character we shall find room for still high praise. His sentiments of religion were sincere, though tolerant; his integrity and honour pure and spotless; his disposition friendly, generous, and humane; his manners cheerful and sociable. He possessed, in short, every quality calculated to excite respect and affection; and few persons, we believe, ever attained both in a higher degree, or among a wider circle of friends. In person and bodily constitution Mr Hunter Blair, was, to all appearances, so robust and vigorous, and his habits were so moderate and favourable to his health, that few individuals seemed destined to a longer enjoyment of life. This fatal event has therefore fallen on his numerous friends and relations with the additional weight of a sudden and unexpected calamity. – Edinburgh Courant

This poor woman had, for a considerable time, been a staunch adherent of Mr David Dow, from whom, like others of his little flock, she received a weekly pension. It is right to add that Mr Dow, although well aware of what she had done, continued her pension till her death. At Braneyfield, in Carolina county, Miss Catherine Rankins, aged 109 years. She was a native of Virginia, and was born near Port Royal. She distinctly recollected the place where the town was built having been a wilderness. The wars with the Indians at the foot of the South Western Mountains, were freshly impressed on her memory. She recollected with much force the great excitement in Virginia which was caused by Braddock’s defeat; while the war of the revolution was but an event of yesterday. She cherished towards England all the affectionate attachment of the early colonists, and mentioned it only by the endearing epithet of home. To the latest period of her life she was a loyal subject of the sovereign of England and viewed Virginia as still in a state of rebellion. – Richmond Enquirer.
