Future Plans

Bible readers are very familiar with stories of enmity between brothers in ancient Mediterranean families: Jacob and Esau (Gn 27); Joseph and his eleven brothers (Gn 37). Inheritance was often a key cause of the enmity.

The brothers praised in Psalm 133:1 for living together in unity illustrate the situation where a father died and did not specify a division of the inheritance.

According to Roman law, a division of inheritance was required only if both parties wanted it. Judaic law allowed the division on the petition of a single son (see Lk 15:12), but it was shameful because it effectively expressed the wish that the father were already dead.

Jesus The Mediator

In today’s story Jesus is invited to be a mediator, a very difficult but highly honorable role in this culture. Conflicts can easily escalate to blood feuds that no one wants.

The key role of the mediator is to head off the blood feuds. The role is honored and advocated in the Matthean Beatitudes (Mt 5:9) “Truly worthy of

esteem, truly honorable are the peacemakers for they will be considered God-like.”

Ideally the mediator is a kinsperson at least five links removed from the disputing parties. Above all, the mediator should be a person who, because of personality, status, respect, wealth, influence, or other characteristics, can create in the litigants a willingness to conform with his decision.

Jesus responds to the honorable invitation in two ways. First, he adopts the customary role of cultural humility. Paying and receiving compliments is dangerous in this culture. Jesus protects himself against envy and the evil eye by his feigned humility: “Friend, who set me to be judge or arbitrator over you?”

Second, Jesus gives the real reason for his refusal. He suspected he was being drawn into a conflict driven by greed.

The Parable And Greed

In Jesus’ parable about the man with the bumper crop, God is not pleased with his plan to “save for the future” in bigger barns. God calls this man a fool! The man deserves God’s judgment.

The man is clearly a landowner, a minuscule minority in Jesus’ world. He appears to live on his land and share in the work of the land. When he

1

I n c a r n a t i o n P a r i s h B u l l e t i n

realizes the magnitude of his crops, he plans to tear down his barns and build bigger ones.

But his “future planning” is condemned by God and even by the words of the fool himself. “You have ample goods laid up for many years,” said the fool. “Relax, eat, drink, and be merry” (Lk 12:19).

He stores for future lean years, but not simply for his own pleasure. When the village smallholders have to come to him and borrow grain, he will charge an exorbitant price in hopes of confiscating even more land for himself.

What should the fool have done? The same anyone else in that position should have done: distribute the surplus to others, immediately.

The lucky landowner was in a good position to become a “patron” to select even more clients, or simply to be beneficent.

He might have done what Jesus praised the shrewd steward for doing (Lk 16:1-9): using surplus wealth as a means to gain friends so that when the wealth is gone, the friends will remain and repay the kindnesses, as this culture expects.

Our ancestors never fail to challenge us.

18TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEAUGUST 4, 2019In VainThe word “vanity” is featured, famously, in this week’s readings. “Vanity of vanities! All things are vanity”!

But what in the world does the word vanity mean in this passage? Today’s English has made it signify pride: “proud personal displays,” like a peacock. But the original meaning of the word is the one intended in our First Reading: something that is “empty or valueless,” fleeting, like a vapor. “In vain” comes closer to the meaning.*

So when Qoheleth, the presumed author of the First Reading, says “vanity of vanities,” what he means is that everything is futile. It is a statement of despair. Today, he would be diagnosed with depression.

Beer commercials show men and women guzzling beer and acting like teenagers, but telling us, “it doesn’t get any better than this.” It doesn’t? We admit “we can’t take it with us when we go,” but we do try, and we fail.

Would you concur that your life is “in vain”?

Or in other words, is the First Reading is actually true to life? It gives a dark picture.

What profit comes to man from all the toil and anxiety of heart with which he has labored

under the sun? All his days, sorrow and grief are his occupation; even at night his mind is not at rest.

How many lives in this country are devoted to riches and looking good and earning much and to being admired? Do we “labor under the sun” in order that we will have something to live for? Qoheleth says we seek such things in vain.

We should listen to him.

In the Gospel Jesus says succinctly that a human life does not consist of possessions.

A very rich man produced a huge harvest one year. He was busy tearing down his storage

barns to build still larger ones so he could hoard more into them.

Remind you of anyone?

Well, we can see it throughout the Americanized cultures: larger and larger buildings, bigger and bigger fortunes, and the greatest compliments that sportscasters give an athlete, “he is the greatest in the history of … ” (name your sport).

Qoheleth sees this as “vane.”

Success in sports is not bad. It is good. But do you or we or they live only for it?

The parable’s rich man got a nasty surprise as he was busy eating and drinking and being wild. God said to him,

You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you;

6

I n c a r n a t i o n P a r i s h B u l l e t i n

and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?

Could such a remark could be addressed to you or me? Couldn’t God say “you fool” to our secret ambitions? Are we hoarding what we have, even if we are poor? At bottom are you and I amassing even our good deeds? Are we being children of God or children of mammon?

Truth is, all people are constructed so that they are able to be open to the source and summit of all love, God.

This is the one thing that makes life worth living.Relax.

If we can see out over our pile of possessions (or the ones we wish for), then every heap of honors and gains can be seen as simply vainglory.

Try it this way: if death were on its way to you this very night, what would you return to the loving God?

John Foley, SJ________ * From the Hebrew hebel, which could come from the name Abel.

THE PERSPECTIVE OF JUSTICE

Our Other DesiresToday’s liturgy contains a very strong message to those who have much and to those who want more: “Avoid greed in all its forms.” We are to

avoid the mistake of the rich fool, who saved up a fortune, only to die and have it left to others.

“That is the way it works with the man who grows rich for himself instead of growing rich in the sight of God.” Christians are challenged to be “intent on things above rather than on things of earth”; anything else “is vanity and a great misfortune.”

Our society, based on the civil religion of capitalism, perceives greed as good and desirable, for it fuels the drive to improve ourselves. “Greed is not a bad word,” said a prominent American economist and erstwhile Secretary of Treasury.

But in the Christian scheme of things, greed is a bad word, and money does not save: God is “the only one who helps (us) and sets (us) free.”

The Eucharist is a sign of the Christian commitment to satisfying basic human needs such as food; all our other desires should prompt us to fall on our knees with the prayer: “Forgive our sins and restore us to life.”

Neither individuals nor nations should regard the possession of more and more goods as the ultimate objective. … The exclusive pursuit of material possessions prevents man’s growth as a human being and stands in opposition to his true grandeur. Avarice, in individuals and in nations, is the most obvious form of stultified moral development.

Pope Paul VI, Populorum Progressio, 1967:19
