A Safety Change Agent By: Anh

A Ship

Can you imagine paying a lot of money to sail on the big-

gest ship in the world, but then it sinks and you are

separated from your family? Well, you think it’s tough,

right? Did you ever realize it’s true for some people? Do

you know a ship with the same description? Think care-

fully if you haven’t thought of it. Here’s a hint: it’s a very

famous ship, and it was made in the 20th century. If you

give up, or that you already know, then you should have

the same answer: RMS Titanic! RMS in the RMS Titanic

stands for The Royal Mail Steamer, Ship, or Steamship.

In case you’re wondering.

Accidents:

Did you know: that the amount of builders it took to build RMS

Titanic was approximately 11,300 men. 8 workers died, and

over 240 accidents had happened. This was recorded by the

company, Harland and Wolff.

This is a photograph of Joseph Bruce Ismay, the

director of White Star Line, who ordered the 3

sister ships, Gigantic (later known as Britannic),

Titanic, and Olympic.

Important events:

On July 31st, 1908; The contract was signed for the construction of RMS Titanic, with

RMS Olympic and RMS Britannic (Before called Gigantic)(the sister ships). Titanic is the sec-

ond of the ships to be built.

On March 31, 1909; Construction! The Harland and Wolff company started to build Titanic.

March 31, 1911; Construction was finished. It was finished exactly 2 years after it was

started.

April 10, 1912; All aboard! Captain Edward John Smith, crew and all 3,511 passengers came

aboard on Titanic.

Here is a picture of Captain Smith. He was

the captain of Titanic, and would be retir-

ing after this journey. Little did he know

Titanic would not make it to New York and

that he would go down with this unfortu-

nate ship.

So, have you realized how Titanic has

changed the world? Here’s a hint: take a

peek at the title!! Why yes, Titanic

changed the world’s thinking of safety.

Even when the boat was sinking, a lot of

people stayed in bed! So that’s the way

people thought of sea. They thought the

ship wouldn’t sink! After Titanic, there

had to be enough lifeboats for everyone

on the ship.

Before Titanic, a ship only had to have a certain number of lifeboats! It’s didn’t matter how many passengers there were!
