On the night of Rosa Park’s arrest, Jo Ann Robinson, head of the Women’s Political Council, printed and circulated a flyer throughout Montgomery's black community which read as follows:

"Another woman has been arrested and thrown in jail because she refused to get up out of her seat on the bus for a white person to sit down. It is the second time since the Claudette Colvin case that a Negro woman has been arrested for the same thing. This has to be stopped. Negroes have rights too, for if Negroes did not ride the buses, they could not operate. Three-fourths of the riders are Negro, yet we are arrested, or have to stand over empty seats. If we do not do something to stop these arrests, they will continue and the next time it may be you, or your daughter, or mother. This woman's case will come up on Monday. We are, therefore, asking every Negro to stay off the buses Monday in protest of the arrest and trial. Don't ride the buses to work, to town, to school, or anywhere on Monday. You can afford to stay out of school for one day if you have no other way to go except by bus. You can also afford to stay out of town for one day. If you work, take a cab, or walk. But please, children and grown-ups don't ride the bus at all on Monday. Please stay off all buses Monday.

The 1950s was a fun but racial decade. Many babies were born and many inspirational people took a stand and changed the world. One of the most important people of the 1950s was a lady by the name of Rosa Parks. Back in the 1950s there was a law that stated “a ‘black person’ must give up their seat if a ‘white person’ was standing on a bus”.

It was on December 1st, 1955 that a 42 year old African American woman born in Tuskegee Alabama, refused to give up her seat to a ‘white person’ because she was exhausted from a long hard day at work. This event cause many problems and she was arrested that day because of it. Rosa Parks became a symbol of modern Civil Rights Movement. She was so fed up with all these ridiculous laws enabling black people to do what they want, so she helped a man named Marin Luther King Jr who started the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

The boycott lasted for a year, from 1955 – 1956 November 13th. Many extraordinary people helped peruse this boycott that changes the word. The acts of these brave people have changed our modern day life today. To think if

Rosa Parks had obeyed the law of the 1950’s and if Martin Luther King Jr didn’t think about a protest to help them then I think that our way of life in 2000’s would be completely different. We would be split in half. There would have to be black and white schools, different movie theatres, different neighbour hood, there would probably end up being a divide in each country and society would become one big war fair. The courageous act of this one lady with the help of Martin Luther King Jr has surely made the future a better place for whatever colour you are.

Martin Luther King Jr started a campaign to stop racial segregation on public transport. This act of discrimination had outraged the ‘black’ community and people joined the boycott. On Saturday, December 3, it was evident that the black community would support the boycott, and very few black people rode the buses that day. This inconvenience made people walk miles just to get from one place to another but they put all that aside and continued on not using the busses.

MovementsMovements

A movement is something that occurs after an event e.g. WW2 then human rights. One of the many movements of the 50’s is if the democratic labor party wasn’t formed (1956), Kevin Rudd might not be our prime minister and our entire lifestyle would be so different. If it wasn’t for Joern Utzon winning the Sydney Opera House competition (1957), the Sydney Opera House would look completely different If QANTAS international services (1958) wasn’t started, we would still have to take boats or small planes if we were to go overseas. If Darwin didn’t become a city (1959) we wouldn’t have half of the places or anything that we have here at our home. If Australia’s population didn’t reach 10 million (1959) a huge amount of people in this very room wouldn’t be Australia. You might be Asian, European or any other nationality in the world.

In the diners they had food like burgers, French fries and milkshakes. The film industry was hugely based around America. A couple of the films released then were, The Wizard of Oz, Rebel Without a Cause, Signing in the Rain, Angry Men, All About Eve, Vertigo and Searchers.

Britain's InfluenceBritain's Influence

The 1950’s in Australia was based a lot on Britain as for England was our home county. Food, Fashion and Music was a big influence from Britain. Food types such as porridge, mash potato, cereal, roast dinners, sausages and vegetable were our main meals and are still in Australia today but as over the years we have also become more wide spread and have adopted many different dishes from other countries. Most our dinners today consist of 3 vegetables and 1 type of meat this was a big thing back in the 1950’s that was bought over from Britain. Fashion followed along with music and today we still get music and cloths from Britian as well as other countries such as Asia and America and many other countries. Though we were mostly with Britain in the 1950’s we had also starting to take in some of America’s way of life.
