1955 and 1959: PPL discovered Haripur and Chhatakgas fields;
1960s: PSOC discovered 5 gas fields (Titas, Habiganj, Rashidpur, Kailashtila and Bakhrabad);
1961 : Oil and Gas Development Corporation (OGDC) formed as a national organization for exploration in country. Carried out geological and geophysical surveys including gravity, magnetic and seismic; drilled wells in Jaldi and Semutang discovering Semutang gas field;
3
1972 : Bangladesh Minerals, Oil and Gas Corporation (Now Petrobangla) formed;
1974: Enacted Bangladesh Petroleum Act to facilitate international participation under PSC;
Divided offshore of Bangladesh in 6 blocks and awarded to Ashland, ARCO, BODC (Japex), Union Oil, Canadian superior Oil and Ina Naftaplin under Production Sharing Contracts;
These companies carried out gravity, magnetic and seismic surveys(3200KM);
1977: Union Oil company discovered offshore field Kutubdia;
1978: PSC ended with relinquishment of blocks by 4

1980s : Petrobangla drilled 12 exploration wells and discovered 7 gas fields (Beanibazar, Feni, Fenchuganj, Kamta, Meghna, Narsingdi)
1981: Shell Oil Company was awarded the Chittagong hill tracts. drilled Sitapahar well which turned dry. Subsequently shell undertook exploration in extreme north , drilled Salbanhat well was also dry. .
In 1988 Scimitar Exploration Limited was awarded PSC what is now block # 13 in Surma basin. They failed to prove the extent of the oil discovery at Sylhet structure but discovered the Jalalabad gas field. 6

Gas Demand and Supply Gas Demand and Supply
Demand Supply gap is increasing, supply is likely to decline from 2016-17Production figure includes 500 mmcfd LNG
Total Demand of gas upto 2030 > 30TCF
HOW TO DO ITHOW TO DO IT Intensively exploration activities for new
reserves; Import of LNG; Import of Pipeline Gas; Energy Conservation Shifts Some NG demands to other fuels. Like
Coal , Oil & RE etc; Market Price Adjustment
Our Aim to Reduce Demand Supply Gap
29
Short & Long Term Planning
Shortterm
Enhance production from existing fields Demand side management Efficient use of energyCapacity Building
Medium term
Capacity building continue……. Intensify exploration activities for new reserve LNG import Increased Domestic Coal Production & Import of coal
Longterm
Exploration activities for new reserve continue…….. LNG import continue…….Increased Coal Production & Import of coal continue…...Price RestructuringPipeline gas importDiversify energy sources (RE incl. Solar, Nuclear etc)
