Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Fre edom of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')
Thank you for your email dated 4 September 2010 in which you made a request for access tocertain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.
As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to informationheld by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.
You asked:1. How many Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) were employed by the force in the last
three financial years, 2007/08, 2008/09 and 2009/10?
2. How many crimes were detected by PCSOs in each of the last three financial years?
3. How many fixed penalty notices (FPNs) and penalty notices for disorder (PNDs) were issuedby PCSOs in each of the last three financial years? Please give separate figures for FPNsand PNDs?
4. What was the total annual wage bill for the forces PCSOs in each of the last three financialyears?
In response:
We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I provide a response for
your attention.Infor mation given below is as of the 1st November 2010. Obviously the information is dynamicand can alter daily.
1. The numbers of PCSOs employed were as follows:2007/08 - 428.7 Full time equivalent (FTE)2008/09 - 422.1 (FTE)2009/10 - 434.9 (FTE)
2. No information held with regards to the numbers of crimes detected by PCSOs. PCSOs haveno power to arrest/detain unless they do so under common law. There will be occasionswhere PCSOs have witnessed a crime and call for the assistance of local officers who wouldthen be shown as the arresting officer without reference to the PCSOs.
3. The number of FPNs issued by PCSOs are as follows:2007/08 - 1022008/09 - 136
2009/10 - 507
The number of PNDs issued by PCSOs are as follows:2007/08 - 72008/09 - 142009/10 - 610
4. The amount spent on PCSOs salaries including employers contributions to National Insuranceand Superannuation were as follows:2007/08 - £10,544,6462008/09 - £10,423,9362009/10 - £11,877,915
