OREGON STATE MEN'S OUTLOOK

SPRINTS: Oregon State's sprint corps will be heavily dependent on membersof the Beavers' football squad for any success. Three members of the sprintcorps come from the football squad, and as a result, will not be available forfull time track duty. The lone exception to that is Darvin Malone, a senior, who has no more football eligibility. Robb Thomas (10.83) and Erick Montgomery(10.75) are two football players doubling in track. Senior Babajide Akanbi(10.6) and freshman Tod Wjtzel (10.6) are the other available sprinters, alongwith long jumper Guy Oekerman. OSU will be hard pressed to score in thesprints.

400: This will be a very weak event for the Beavers with no proven runnersavailable at this distance. Junior Jeff Tressler (47.4) has the best timewhich he recorded in junior college at Clackamas CC. Other available athletesfor the 400 include Marc Stewart (49.88), Brad Carman (50.9) and Tod Whitzel(NT) and Tod Perkins (NT).

800-1500: Once again, OSU has no proven quality runners at eitherdistance, except Karl Van Calcar, the Beavers school record holder in the 3,000meter steeplechase who is questionable this season due to achillis tendonities.Van Calcar has run 1500 meters in 3:46.81. Senior John Warinner is the topreturnee at 800 (1:53.0) and 1500 (3:50.6). The rest of Beavers available inthe middle distances have had no experience at the Pac-lO level--freshmen WillyHewson and Lew Barnes, transfer Brian Fagerberg (1:55.9), Donn McAdams(1:54.5); Aaron McKee (1:54.69); Dave McCormick (1:56.0) and Jeff Tressler(1:56.0).

DISTANCES: This is an area of strength if Van Calcar is able to compete ashe is the OSU record holder in the steeplechase (8:28.25) and the Pacific-lOchampion at 5,000 (13:52.55). However, OSU does not have much to go along withVan Calcar as all other Beaver runners are untested.

HURDLES: OSU will be depending on freshman recruit Jim Millager (14.30) tocarry the load in both the high hurdles and intermediate hurdles. Brad Carman(55.1) will help in the intermediate and highs (15.87). Transfer BarringtonLewis (14.4) should also help in the high hurdles as well as Dave Collins (14.8and 56.24). Once again, this event has inexperienced people.

JUMPS: OSU probably has more depth in the long jump and triple jump thanany area on the sqaud. Guy Oekerman (24-2), Babajide Akanbi (23-8), RobbThomas (23-1) and Dave Turnbull (22-10 1/4) are the long jumpers and BarringtonLewis (51-10 1/2) is a transfer who gives the Beavers a quality triple jumperto replace graduated Kenny Taylor. Turnbull (45-4 1/2) will return for hissecond year as a triple jumper and he should improved in 1986 The Beavers havedepth in the high jump with Turnbull (7-0 1/4), Dan Franklin (6-10), ScottFranklin (6-8) and Thomas (6-9) available.

POLE VAULT: Another position of strength with Greg Likens (17-6), one ofthe better vaulters in the Pacific-JO returning, along with Nick Till (16-5)and Dave Collins (14-6).

SHOT PUT: The loss of Chris Waltman via graduation has left the Beavershurting in this event. OSU has only two shot putters who have gone over 40feet--freshman Corey Warren (45-6) and John Thomas (43-6).

DISCUS: Like the shot put, the discus will be totally inexperienced andwith only one person who has thrown over 160 feet--John Thomas at 161-5. Theonly other competitors available are Corey Warren, Glenn Hamilton and BillMorrow, none of whom have registered a collegiate mark in the discus.

Page 13: 1986 Oregon State Track & Field Media Guide

JAVELIN: Senior Mike Pedersen has a best of 245-6 in this event and iscapable of improving that mark if he can stay clear of injuries which havehampered him the past two seasons. Only two other competitors are available inthe javelin--Brad Bales (208-0) and Mike Twist (172-4).

HAMMER: John Thomas threw the hammer 190-8 last year as a freshman and hecould very well break the school record of 207-2 this year. John's improvementhas been remarkable and he is easily the most improved athlete in one year'stime on the OSU squad. Once again, John Thomas will have no expereincedteammates to join him in the hammer ring. Other competitors scheduled to throwthe hammer this year include Corey Warren, Glenn Hamilton and Bill Morrow.

Inexperience is the key word in describing the OSU Men's track team. CoachChuck McNeil can point to only three athletes--Karl Van Calcar, Greg Likens andJohn Thomas--as athletes going into the season capable of scoring big in Pac-1Ocompetition. McNeil must depend on several youngsters and newcomersdeveloping quickly for the Beavers to be a competitive dual meet team.

OREGON STATE WOMEN'S OUTLOOK

Oregon State's women's track team has taken a step beyond rebuilding. The Beavers though still young, have the numbers and experience to improvein 1986. And it is very likely that Chuck McNeil's team could start itsmove up the ladder if things go just as planned.

To be competitive, Oregon State must remain healthy and helping keeppeople on the track in every event is the fact that for the first time inseveral years, Oregon State can boast a depth chart. Numbers have been aproblem, particularly in the last two seasons when OSU stumbled to thebottom of the NorPac Conference. But this time around, McNeil and hisassistants Mike Chriss and Gary Sievers have a roster full of names tocall upon.

It is indeed a beginning. And what makes it more promising than inyear's past is the fact that the depth chart is laden with several provenathletes. The Beavers have 12 letter winners returning to the fold forthe 1986 campaign and that includes several contenders for top honors inthe league by the end of the season. What makes OSU's prospects evenbrighter in the NorPac is that the Beavers will host the leaguechampionships in May.

Returning to make things look bright are five seniors and all fivewill be counted on to make major contributions to the Beaver cause.Leading the way is three-year letter winner and last year's team MVP, KarlWeston, who will be one of the premier hurlders in the conference thisseason. Weston was second at the NorPac's in the 100 hurldes at 14.14and fourth in the 400's at 1:01.15. The school record holder in thelatter event, she will also be a factor on the Beaver sprint relays andhas even long jumped for OSU.

Weston's all-around talent and leadership are important to the Beaversuccess as is the return of Kam Johnson in the weight events. Johnsonqualified for the NCAA Championships two years ago in the shot put andthen red shirted last season. She is the school record holder for shot at50-0 and has been equally valuable in the discus.

The senior leadership will also be visible in the javelin, one ofOSU's best events last year and certainly one of the deepest. ConniePeterka and Monica Witt both return f or OSU to bolster an outstandinggroup of javelin people. Peterka was eighth in the NCAA's last season andthe only OSU entrant at nationals. She too holds the school mark at 171-3and with Witt and returnee Julie Waage behind her, she leads an extremelypowerful lineup in that event. Witt has lettered three years and has abest of 149-9, while Waage, a junior, threw 161-8 last season. Makingthings even stronger in the javelin is the addition of Beth Nygren, lastyear's Oregon State AA champ. She is also expected to compete in the shotand discus for the Beavers.

On paper, the weights and hurdles are OSU'S main strengths mainlybecause of experience and depth. Johnson will have support in the shotand discus from Nygren, and Hawaii state record holding shot putter SarahBryant as well as sophomore letter-winner Kristi Wreath. Wreath had bestsof 42-01/4 in the shot and 145-0 in the discus in her first season withthe Beavers in '85.

Page 22: 1986 Oregon State Track & Field Media Guide

For Weston, help will come in doses. The first dose is ofexperience. Behind Weston's talents will be Vicki Anderson, anothersenior, and lettermen Kelly Kaser and Jennifer Stark. Anderson will runboth the 100's and intermediates for the Beaver team and Kaser and Starkwill likely specialize in the intermediates and 100 respectively when theycompete in that event.

Dose two of hurdlers is brimming with freshman promise. Lynn Wolf,Karma Groth and Shawn Bishop-Walker are all first year hurdlers, who makethe Beaver depth chart an impressive one.

The Oregon State distance team should also help provide points to theBeaver cause. Cross country stars Sue Martineau and Peggy Murri help beefup a distance crew somewhat depleted by the loss of Kathy Knowlton andKaren Mathison. Martineau will run everything from the 1500 to the 3000and Murri will handle distances ranging from the 800 up. It is aformidable one-two punch but there is not a great deal of depth orexperience in support. Transfer Heather Cusack and sophomore Alison Ernstalong with frosh Kristine Schaefer will add some dimension to the castwhich could develop into a solid group by the season's end.

Kaser is OSU's top returneeas well this season. Schaefer, last year, will also be countedcould also figure in the 400 foBeaver mainstays in the 100 andsprinter when needed and McNeilsprints with some new faces.

in the 400 and will probably run the 800who was fourth at state in the AA 1500on for depth in the longer sprints. Starkthe Beavers but will likely be one of the

200. Weston can also be an effectivehas beefed up his depth chart in the

Freshmen Lisa Byhre, Cathy Strong and Monique Walters give the Beaverteam more sprint depth then it has seen in several years. That trioshould help make up for the loss of premier prospect Pam Quails, whom theBeavers seemingly had in tow but who opted for WSU instead. All three arein the 12.0-12.5 range in the 100 and Waiters had a 25.5 200 time in highschool in Millersville, Maryland. Byhre was an All-Stater at Beavertonand Strong was her teams' captain and MVP at Wilson.

Waiters will also be used in the triple jump, where she joins letterwinner Jean Lee, OSU's top returning triple jumper. The long jump couldbe a much improved event for the Beavers. Lee and Weston bring experienceto that event and Byher, frosh Heidi East out of Crescent Valley HighSchool and Karissa Pedersen should contribute.

Anderson is the main OSU force in the high jump but again, new faceswill be a factor before the season is through. Jessica Cortell, KimFenton and Liz Hoyt join with transfer Kathy Sanders to give McNeil astrong nucleous in that event.

A big blow to the Beaver team was the loss of Meredith Howell, who wonthe NorPac heptathlon title two years ago, red shirted last season butfailed to return to the team this year. She will be hard for the Beaversto replace in an event that has seen OSU win two of the last three NorPacchampionships.

The Beavers placed a distant sixth at last season's NorPacChampionships and the emphasis will be on upward mobility in terms ofstandings this season. The experience and numbers would indicate that theBeavers have an excellent shot at moving up and should the climb begin in1986, then McNeil figures that will only mean brighter things for theyears to come.
