Barbara Goodwin Zeibots -Headmistress SAYING GOOD-BYE TO SHELDRAKE ..... . . . . . . not an easy task!

When the last stick of furniture is put on the moving van there will be many tears shed. We will remember all the wonderful students, teachers and countless special events. 65 Sheldrake is where The York School grew and developed into one of the leading independent schools in Canada.

We will never forget our roots, these high ceilings and cluttered halls which gave us our beginnings. We won't leave that culture and spirit behind. It will travel with us, in and around those sticks of furniture, to be unloaded with the boxes and computers at our new home.

We need to move. Our new building at 1320 Yonge Street is perfect for us to carry on our spirit and culture. The bright new classrooms and corridors, and the specially designed areas for art, music and technology will be a welcomed and much needed improvement to meet our curriculum needs. Our well-known reputation as a school that makes use of all community resources will be enhanced by our midtown location.

Enjoy this yearbook, carefully compiled by our staff members: David Kupec, Ora Chandler, and Susan Mason, with assistance from Samantha Thompson, Chris Rynn, Brittany Nelson and Rachel Koziebrocki. Forty years on we will remember 65 Sheldrake through the pages of Perspective '98 and those that were published before it.

Marilyn Andrews - Vice Principal Remember last year's Perspective '97 ... I reminisced about the "olden days", about having

brown hair instead of white and about the fact that the only missing link in the life of the York School was a building of our own. Within two weeks of the delivery of the yearbooks last June, we became the very proud (and somewhat shell-shocked) owners of 1320 Y onge Street, the new home of The York School.

The support of our parents through the capital loan deposit programme was truly remarkable -you really do care- and we are delighted with the offers of assistance around the actual move. For those of us who administer your school on a day-to-day basis, remarkably painless ... there has never been, nor will there ever be a dull moment at the York School!

Barbara and I could not, quite literally, have survived the summer and the fall without the constantly soothing noises made by Susan Paul, Chair of our Board and her cohorts, Larry Morassutti (Head of our Property Search Committee) and Sam Incardona, who oversees the ongoing construction/renovations for our Board. All three of them appear to have abdicated their day jobs to become full-time volunteers at York and were so efficient and seemingly relaxed about all of the issues involving 1320 that we were free to concentrate on running the school for your kids! And ... that's what it's really all about!

At the end of July, 1997, the Director General Dr. Roger Peel sent his congratulations and welcomed The York School into the International Baccalaureate Organisation. We are able to offer the IB Diploma programme beginning in September, 1998.

This is a highly respecated, pre-university curriculum. It is a two-year programme and will be integrated with Ontario's requirements for secondary school graduation. York's students will have the opportunity to gain superior credentials, allowing them wider access to post-secondary education.

As one of the 14 Ontario schools and more than 600 worldwide, The York School is proud to be recognized as a member of the international community whose goal is excellence in education.

THE FIRST SETTLERS

When the first settlers from Europe arrived in the new land, first they looked for the land they owned because they could not just pick any piece of land. Next they had to clear their land, because they could not build their cabin until they cleared some trees. Then they built their cabin because they did not want to freeze in the winter. Finally they built a bigger house and gave the cabin to their animals. Most important of all was to keep the fire going because it gave them heat and light, and they cooked their food on it.

PERSPECTIVE

We are pleased to present Perspective '98. This year's production of The York School yearbook progressed fairly smoothly despite difficulties encountered in trying to be in two places at once. Many thanks to all the contributors, photographers, sponsors, advertisers and interested staff and students. We look forward to working under one roof at 1320 Yonge St. Here's to Perspective '99!
