Friday Sessions

Friday, April 28th:

(1a) Landscape Design with Textured Embellishments Intermediate—Part 1 of 3 This 3 part workshop will teach students all the necessary techniques to create 'Whale Passage Lookout' - see Carol Seeley quilt on page 6. The first day will start out with a discussion how to create these types of patterns. Then students will begin using the pattern provided and start fabric selection using Carol’s tips for creating visual depth in their seascapes. Students will then use a special pieced appliqué construction method either by hand or machine. Please note there is an additional kit fee of $22 for this 3 day workshop and sewing machines are required (max 18 students). This is Part 1 of a 3 part workshop—participants must register for all 3 sessions. Instructor— Carol Seeley

(1b) Colour Blocking Beginner to Advanced In this workshop you will learn to make and use thickened dyes as a base for printing with a silk screen. Thickened dyes do not change the hand of the fabric, allowing the fabric to remain soft and supple despite repeated applications, plus thickened dyes are transparent, so layers of dye will change intensity, value and colours, giving the artist a wide range of possible uses for their created cloth. By using an open screen, with no images masked on the screen, students achieve large areas of one or several colors that can mix and combine on the fabric. With stencils and masks over coloured fabrics, repeat images or patterns add incredible diversity to the fabrics. These fabrics are perfect to use in piecing, as backgrounds for appliqué or embellishments and clothing. Time will be spent on showing how the printed fabrics can be used in quilts, clothing and mixed media. Please note there is an additional kit fee of $25 for this 1 day workshop and sewing machines are not required (max 25 students). Instructor—Susan Purney Mark

(1c) Crazy Quilt Baby Blanket Beginner to Intermediate Flannel lovers get ready! This adorable beginner heirloom quilt class is great for quilter’s just starting out as well as accomplished quilters who want to create a cherished gift for a child. Hitting on the latest trend of modern techniques with vibrant pops of colour on white, this class starts out with a morning of modern crazy quilting with a simple sew and fold - no pattern, no piecing technique. You will play with a variety of stitches available on your machine and work to balance colour vs. white throughout the quilt. By the afternoon you will master a simple fold over binding with a perfect mitred corner. Please note there is an additional pattern fee of $8 for this 1 day workshop and sewing machines are required (max 24 students). Please bring your own materials. Instructor—Brandy Lynn Maslowski

Saturday Sessions

Saturday, April 29th:

(2a) Landscape Design with Textured Embellishments Intermediate—Part 2 of 3 A simple landscape can take on a more realistic look with a few basic surface embellishments. Explore these basic techniques on the seascape prepared on the first day of this workshop. Create the illusion of water movement and shading with tulle and thread. Then learn the machine embroidery process for creating textured trees on your islands from far away to close up. Finally, you will have a basic introduction into thread painting in preparation for day 3. Thread painting is the creation of designs made only of thread to be appliquéd to your finished quilt top. Please note this is Part 2 of a 3 part workshop—participants must register for all 3 sessions. Instructor— Carol Seeley

(2b) Colour It - Fuse It! Beginner to Advanced Learn how to make richly patterned handmade cloth using painted fusible web and interfacing for innovative surface design and embellishment. This is not your grand-mother’s fusible web! In this workshop, Susan will show you how versatile fusible web can be in the hands of an artist. By combining several different processes, she demonstrates how to add layers of colour, transparency and interest with a variety of techniques and unusual products. With Susan’s expert guidance learn to create layers of texture and pattern with paint, bonding powders, decorative foils and more. The beautiful fabrics made with these techniques are works of art in their own right and will add a rich dimension to your art quilts. Please note there is an additional kit fee of $25 for this 1 day workshop and sewing machines are not required (max 25 students). Instructor—Susan Purney Mark

(2c) Hexagon Messenger Bag Intermediate—Part 1 of 2 Every stitcher’s delight - A QUILTED BAG! Join Brandy Lynn for a Modern Hexie Messenger Bag that shows off your favourite fabrics on earth and your quilting skills as well. This 2 day workshop will introduce you to the joy of hexagons by hand or machine (which may become addic-tive) and the basics of messenger bag construction. Students will walk away with a completed lined bag with pockets and a desire to make one for everyone on your gift list! Please note there is an additional pattern fee of $8 for this 2 day workshop and sewing machines are required (max 24 students). Please bring your own materials. This is Part 1 of a 2 part workshop—participants must register for both sessions. Instructor—Brandy Lynn Maslowski

Sunday Sessions

Sunday, April 30th:

(3a) Landscape Design with Textured Embellishments Intermediate—Part 3 of 3 The day will be spent exploring thread painting and all it can do to create texture on your quilt surface. Workshop includes lacy thread painting with tulle and confetti to create realistic boughs, bushes and trees. Also included is fine thread painting of detailed imagery such as a whale and/or eagle. Processes for creating a waterfall and a 3D tree trunk will be demonstrated. Please note this is Part 3 of a 3 part workshop—participants must register for all 3 sessions. Instructor— Carol Seeley

(3b) Screen Printing with Attitude Beginner to Advanced Screen printing on fabric opens the door to so many possibilities. In this workshop you discover that screen printing is not difficult or expensive. You will learn to make simple, basic screens that will meet all your needs and the appropriate paints, dyes and tools to use. Different techniques will be covered including freezer paper stencils and other masks, Thermofax printing and using gel and glue mediums for foils and special effects. Time will be spent on good design fundamentals, repeating imagery and overlaid colours and patterns. You will leave with a range of surface design ideas and a group of samples for reference or to use in future projects. Please note there is an additional kit fee of $25 for this 1 day workshop and sewing machines are not required (max 25 students). Instructor—Susan Purney Mark

(3c) Hexagon Messenger Bag Intermediate—Part 2 of 2 Enjoy day 2 of this fun 2 part workshop. Description included on Page 5. Please note there is an additional pattern fee of $8 for this 2 day workshop and sewing machines are required (max 24 students). Please bring your own materials. This is Part 2 of a 2 part workshop—participants must register for both sessions. Instructor—Brandy Lynn Maslowski

Instructors & Judges Carol Seeley Instructor/Judge Carol is a Fibre Artist, Instructor and the Canadian Quilters Association’s 2007 Teacher of the Year. She be-gan teaching in 1992 and she enjoys assisting her students in creating original designs that they believed to be beyond their abilities, by breaking down the process into simple under-standable step by step instructions. Her work covers a wide range from the traditional quilting style to the more contemporary style of abstract designs and realistic West Coast landscapes, all with an eye to create the illusion of 3D imagery. And, more recently, on the landscapes to create actual 3D imagery to add to the realism. Carol has been privileged to have her work appear in galleries and private homes in North America and Europe as well as several magazines and books. She has been juried into national and international quilt and art shows receiving awards regionally, nationally and internationally for both her contemporary and traditional designs.

Brandy Lynn Maslowski Instructor/Judge/Lecturer Brandy Lynn is a quilt teacher, speaker, judge and author of the children’s picture book Kristy’s Quilt. With a 15-year history as a Fire-fighter and Public Education Officer she is now the Executive Director of the Penticton and Wine Country Chamber of Commerce. She has been stitching her passion on the side for over 2 decades. From clumsy beginner quilter all the way to showing her fibre art in galleries, Brandy understands the learning curve of quilters young and old because she’s been there herself every step of the way. Her talk show Canadian Quilt Talk garnered over 1000 downloads a week for its 2 year run and after 5 years as Brandy Lynn Designs she rebranded her business under the new name Quilter on Fire in the fall of 2016.

Susan Purney Mark Instructor/Judge As a textile artist, Susan has embarked on a life transforming journey into the world of colour, design and pattern. Working with textiles has become her method of self-expression and the focus of her methods of communica-tion. She has studied Design, Patchwork and Embroidery with the prestigious City & Guilds Institute of London, England and has studied with internationally acclaimed teachers/quilt makers Nancy Crow, Jan Meyers Newbury, Elin Noble, Gail Harker and Ruth Issett. Susan has also been awarded two Certificates in Art and Design and Textile Design/Decoration from the Gail Harker Creative Studies Centre in Washington, USA. Susan has spent the last 20 years learning, experimenting and finally teaching a variety of surface design techniques in dyeing, painting, screen printing and image transfers. Most recently she has focused on soy wax resists and her work is known for its use of contemporary design and materials. Susan is an active member of the fibre arts community in British Columbia, Canada and is a member of national/ international fibre and surface design associations and is a qualified quilt judge.

Ionne McCauley Jury Coordinator /Lecturer Ionne has been involved in the quilting world for more than 30 years. She belongs to several quilting and fibre art groups, has had a solo gallery exhibition and been part of many group exhibitions. Ionne was also the Canadian Coordinator of the World Quilt Competition for several years.
