Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be trans-formed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2

There is a line that separates every-thing we do. It separates the moral from the immoral; the ethical from the unethical; the wise from the unwise. Too many of us walk the edge and the ledge of that line try-ing to see how close we can get before we have to face the conse-quences.

God tells us, in order to reach our potential, in order to gain the full and rich life that he has in store for us, we can't walk that line. Instead, we need to be in line with him. And to be in line with God we must make wise, insightful deci-sions. When we fail to do that, we spend an insane amount of time

Dear Friends,With the election now announced we need to make our voices heard and en-sure that the funding of chaplaincy con-tinues.We presently receive funding from the Federal Government of $20,000 per chaplain for a basic salary. In November 2009, the then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd gave a commitment to continue the funding until the 31st December, 2011. The review of the program is pres-ently taking place. Whether the School Chaplaincy program remains after the election and beyond is uncertain.Kevin Rudd was a great advocate of chaplaincy however his view was not shared by all his colleagues. It is important that we encourage both parties to support the continuation of chaplaincy and its expansion whilst re-taining the present Department of Edu-cation, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) guidelines. Our concern is that the program could be modified going forward.

• The current government has indicated that the program may be given over ex-clusively to a secular service.

• The Greens Party has indicated that it prefers a secular service mod-el.In other words, the unique holistic and spiritual dimension of chap-laincy will be lost.

• The Liberal Opposition has stated that the program will continue un-der their leadership, however it will not expand the number of school chaplains.

All parties need to hear the voices of those who value the unique role of chaplains and to hear of the mag-nificent impact on the lives of our children and young people and the school communities they represent.

Please – for our children and our communities – contact your local MP, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition and tell them why chaplaincy should con-tinue and be extended to all schools.

Can you share with them stories of how chaplains are supporting chil-dren? Will you encourage others

concerned about chaplaincy to do the same (your church, your committees, your friends, your school)?PLEASE - VOTE FOR CHAP-LAINCY Go to http://support.schoolchaplaincy.org.au/ to inform your local MP of why they should support our chaplains. Entering your postcode at this site will deliver the contact de-tails for your local MP. From there you just need to add a short, simple story about why school chaplaincy must be con-tinued.Finally, please pray that God in His grace will overrule and this vital ministry to children will be preserved and will flourish. Yours sincerely,Canon Dr Evonne PaddisonCEOACCESS ministries

GRANDMA’S HANDS

Grandma, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench. She didn’t move, just sat with her head down staring at her hands. When I sat down beside her she didn’t acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat I wondered if she was OK. Finally, not really wanting to disturb her but wanting to check on her at the same time, I asked her if she was OK. She raised her head and looked at me and smiled. “Yes,

and embrace life. They braced and caught my fall when as a toddler I crashed to the floor. They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back… As a child, my mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my shoe laces and pulled on my boots. They held my husband and wiped my tears when he went off to war. They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent. They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated with my wedding ring they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special. They wrote my letters to him and trembled and shook when I buried my parents. They have held my children and grandchildren, consoled neighbours and shook in fists of anger when I didn’t understand something that had happened. They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed

I’m fine, thank you for asking,” she said in a clear strong voice.

“I didn’t mean to disturb you, grandma, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK,” I explained to her. “Have you ever looked at your hands,” she asked…..”I mean really looked at your hands?”

I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point she was making.

Grandma smiled and related this story:“Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled and weak have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab

and cleansed the rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent & broken, dried and raw. And to this day when not much of anything else of me works well, these hands hold me up, lay me down and again continue to fold in prayer. These hands are the mark of where I’ve been and the ruggedness of life. But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when he leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of Christ.”

I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember God reached out and took my Grandma’s hands and led her home. When my hands are hurt or sore or when I stroke the face of my children and husband I think of Grandma. I know she has been

Don’t forget to have your say on Saturday Au-gust the 21st. Please pray for this election. Ed-mund Burke a great Irish political philosopher once said; "All that is necessary for the tri-

Perth Locals Reinforce Professor Patrick McGorry’s message about Mental Health Reform in Lead-Up to ElectionA candlelit vigil and walk will take place in the Perth CBD on Tuesday 10 August commencing at 5.30pm for a 6.00pm start. Concerned members of the public are invited to gather at Stirling Gardens, on the corner of Barrack St and St Georges Terrace, Perth. The walk will then proceed to Forrest Place in silence. The Vigil is being planned by a coalition of individuals and community groups. It supports the call by Professor Patrick McGorry for national men-tal health reform. The walk will be conducted to remember those who’ve been lost, and those who still suffer needlessly because of the inadequate mental health care sys-tem. Simultaneous vigils will occur in public places across Australia, includ-ing a similar event at ‘The Gap’ which will be led by Professor McGorry.

People who attend are being asked to bring warm clothes, candles, banners and pictures of loved ones affected by our failing mental health system. This is a non-partisan event, calling on all political candidates to make mental health re-form a priority. For further information, please contact: Mary McCarthy 0417 182 644, Chris Bedding 0405 525 476, JOHN CLAPTON19 Whitewood Street GREENWOOD WA 6024 ph 08-9246 5898
