1st Grade: Learning Packet for the Week of April 20-24
Dear families,
We hope you are all well and keeping busy. Every teacher looks forward to the time that we are back in class again, learning and having fun together. Until that time, we are
putting together a weekly packet of new learning opportunities. It is the goal of the Ferndale School District to provide meaningful tasks to allow your child to continue
learning grade level standards. Using the same schedule shared before, we have created
packets with an increased expectation that your child completes the work. Please encourage them to do their best and complete all activities. These are connected to the
online links and resources provided by the grade level team, if you’re able to access them. If not, just have your child complete the pages attached.
During this global pandemic, we feel strongly as a district that taking care of our families
is the most important thing we can do. While organized by day of week, please do what works for your family’s needs. Please do not let this work packet become a struggle or
an issue. If your child is struggling, please reach out to their teacher.

April 13 - April 17, 2020

Math Stories with 3 Addends (Monday, April 20)
Learning Target (Goal):
Students can make sense of and solve math stories with three addends.
Definitions:
Total – The number that shows all the parts combined.
Addend – The numbers you add together.
Steps to Solve:
1. Read and make sense of the math story.
What is the math story asking you to find?
How many addends, or parts, are joined to make up the total?
2. What strategies can you use to solve the math story?
Draw a picture (count all or count on)
Use a number line
Find the “friendliest” way to add the addends (make a ten, find a double,
etc.)
3. Show your work.
Explain your math thinking verbally to an adult, with pictures, or use
equations
Write an equation, using a box for the unknown total
Answer the math story and provide a label
Example: I find 4 red flowers, 3 yellow flowers, and 7 orange flowers. How many flowers do I find in
all? 14 Flowers
4 + 3 + 7 = (R = red, Y = yellow , O = orange)
Count On
7 ooooo
oo
O R and Y
Make a Ten
R Y O
4 + 3 + 7 =
\ /
4 + 10 = 14
Find a Double
R Y O
4 + 3 + 7 =
\ /
7 + 7 = 14
Success Critiera/Check Your Work:
I used the information from the math story.
I showed my work (picture, equation, etc.)
I wrote an equation to show how to solve for the unknown.
I wrote the answer with a label.
On Tuesday, please complete the practice activity for Tuesday, April 21. If you have any
questions or need help, please contact your child’s teacher.

Wednesday Reading
Directions to Use with Leveled Reading Passages
Oral Reading Fluency – Wednesday-Thursday April 22-23
Learning Target: Read grade-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on
successive readings.
What is fluency?
Fluency is the ability to read smoothly and automatically with accuracy, expression, and attention to
punctuation.
Fluency Guidelines:
*Accuracy: Reading all of the words correctly
*Punctuation: Pay attention to punctuation (pause at commas, stop and change voice appropriately for
periods, exclamation marks and question marks)
*Rate: Read at the appropriate speed, not too fast, not too slow (the end of the year goal for first
graders is to be able to read around 65 words per minute)
*Expression: Read words with emotion
Step-by-Step Directions:
1: Choose a Passage:
You’ll be given three different passages to choose from to practice fluent reading: below level (A Pet to the Vet)
on level (Dr. Brown at Work)
advanced level (Keep Well Day)
You can start with the on level passage and go up or down a level from there based on the above fluency
guidelines.
2. Have an adult time you for 1 minute while you read as many words in the passage as you can. While
you’re reading, the adult will keep track of your errors (mistakes). At the end of the minute stop
reading and mark the last word that you read.
3. Write the amount of total words that you read in the minute on the first line of the fluency score on
the bottom of the passage. The adult will tell you how many errors you made while reading and write
that on the second line at the bottom of the passage. Finally, write the number of words read correctly
on the last line. This is how many words per minute you read.
4. Continue to practice this passage two or more times for the rest of the week and see how your
fluency improves. You can keep track of your improved scores just like you did the first time, at the
bottom of your reading passage. You can even try the other two passages if you want to.
*Check your work: 1) Did you read accurately?
2) Did you think about punctuation while you read?
3) Did you improve your rate each time you re-read?
4) Did you read with expression?
5) Did you use the score sheet on the bottom of the
passage each time and celebrate your growth?
