Kura Tuatahi o Whakatu Greetings to friends andfamily of Nelson Central School.

Magical Mid Winter StarsLast Tuesday evening we were treated to a fantasticmusical evening put on by arguably t he biggest school

choir in the district. Tanya Nock and her team had put inan enormous amount of work to ensure children were wellprepared for their audience. The repertoire was inspired

entirely by the words New Zealand music with all songs

having been written in New Zealand on New Zealandthemes. I am sure everyone will agree, the children

behaved well, sang beautifully and made us all extremely

    proud well done.

The adults contributed hugely to the success of the eveningthrough catering for the pre-show drinks and nibblessession. T hanks are due also to teachers for the way theysupported rehearsals and acted as organisers on the night.

Special thanks go to Trinity Church for allowing us to usethe church for our Magical evening.

Stakeholders DinnerOn Monday evening I had the privilege of joining withinvited members from the education sector to dine with the

Prime Minister, John Key; Anne Tolley, Minister ofEducation; Heather Roy, the Associate Minister ofEducation; and Pita Sharples, co-leader of the Maori Party

at Premiere House. The purpose of the meeting was tohighlight and discuss issues from the education sector andto let Ministers hear stories from the grass roots.

Conversat ion moved back and forth across a very wide

range of issues concerning the sector and included initialteacher education, special education funding, teacher

quality, tertiary issues, the possibility of an educationcommission to investigate aspects of the sector, the school-

work interface and the role of education in helping New

Zealand maintain a competitive place in the world.

A large proportion of time was taken with discussing

national standards. There was general agreement that theconcept of national standards was fine. However, mostpresent had problems with the possibility that t he

information could be used to construct school league tablesand that might be a destructive thing. Submissions close onFriday 3 July so if you strong feelings on the subject please

make a submission. For further information got to:http://www.minedu.govt.nz/theMinistry/Consultation/NationalStandards.aspx

This was an excellent opportunity to hear concerns fromacross the sector, to respond to questions raised by

Ministers, and to contribute to the debate and discussion. I

am sure the Ministers will either have confirmed their ownthinking on some of the issues raised. I also hope they

learned something that will inform their decision making.

Magical Stars Evening - A Note from Tanya to the Choir

A few weeks ago I said to you if you put the work in then you can enjoy the concert. I am so proud ofevery one of you. I have never seen so many smiling faces from the choir and the audience.

    Well done - from Tanya,

    Choir Term 3

Next term Tanya will be taking the Senior Choir only. This is because the extra time is needed toprepare a percussion group for the Mask Parade. The theme for the choir wi ll be songs from movies.

Over the holidays give some thought to whether you would like to be part of this choir.

Every Thursday some Totara kids go to the Centre of New Zealand (A.K.A Summit Club). You get to eatlunch up the top too so thats pretty cool (you also sometimes get lollies!). It is a great walk to go on

with your friends and you always earn something afterwards. Every time you go for a walk you get apoint. When you get 15 points, you get a bronze badge. For 20 points you get a silver badge. If you get30 points you get a golden badge. If you re year 4 or below, when you get to Totara, please join SummitClub! It may sound like a dumb old walk but you can really get something from it. The goal at the end of

the year is to climb Mount Arthur.
