GREEN OFFICE CERTIFICATION AWARD 2018

The Museum of Natural and Cultural History has been recognized for its environmentally friendly practices. UO President Michael H. Schill delivered the platinum-level Green Office Certificate on Friday, April 20, to museum employees. The annual Green Office Certification process through the UO Office of Sustainability helps areas throughout campus adopt best practices and track office sustainability across categories including energy, materials management, purchasing, transportation and events. Offices get certified at bronze, silver, gold or platinum levels. More than 50 offices have been certified since the program started. “A platinum certificate is like a black belt. We hand deliver them to honor their commitment and discipline,” said Steve Mital, UO sustainability directory. “The Green Office Program is the best way to learn the latest on all the ways Campus Planning and Facili-ties Management and others can help your office reduce its environmental impact.”

For those of you who haven’t seen it yet, here is a rendering of what Hayward Field will look like in 2020.

UNIVERSITY DAY THURSDAY, MAY 17th

9AM—4PM

University Day is a campus-wide beautification event that takes place each spring. Hundreds of students, staff, and faculty gather together to plant flowers, spread bark dust, and enjoy live entertainment provided by campus groups. We also invite community members to join us! The tradition dates back to 1905 as part of Junior Weekend, when projects included things such as laying the walk to Deady, followed by a "feast". It has always been a spirited event to prepare the University grounds for commencement cere-monies, and even though it has greatly evolved since 1905, our roots still lie in campus spirit and community service. How To Participate: Come see Judy Peters at the front desk starting today, Tuesday, May 1, and fill out the sign -up form including your T-shirt size! There are var ious tasks/projects to choose from. You only have to donate one hour of your time to qualify for a free Uni-versity Day T-Shirt. Please make sure to talk to your supervisor before you sign up. You do not have to sign up in advance if you don’t want to, BUT that will mean a couple of things. First, there won’t have be a T-shirt for you ready to go and you will have to go to the heart of campus to pick that up. Second, you may not be able to get a specif-ic job you want and would have to choose something else to do. The most desirable jobs will probably be spoken for and will go quickly during this sign-up phase.

Jane’s Walk “Jane’s Walk” is a global event celebrating the legacy of Jane Jacobs, an ur-banist and activist who transformed how city and community planning is ap-proached. The walks are organized to encourage people to come together and explore their communities. The City of Eugene has been organizing the event locally since 2016 and the UO typically participates to celebrate the university community and campus. This year, staff from Campus Planning and Facili-ties Services along with Landscape Architecture faculty will be leading a walk to observe a number of significant trees and associated open spaces on cam-pus. The University of Oregon campus has a number of unusual and significant trees which define the campus character. Trees provide a learning tool for students and silently carry on stories and the legacy of the past. On May 4th at 1 pm, the walk will begin and end at the Erb Memorial Union outdoor amphitheater at the intersection of 13th Avenue and Uni-versity Street. Bike Share at UO

A brief history:

PeaceHealth Rides, the City of Eugene’s bike share system in partnership with UO and LTD and sponsored by PeaceHealth, launched on April 19, 2018 with 35 stations and 300 bikes connecting Downtown with the UO campus and Whitaker neighborhood. However, some may not know that bike share at UO has been 10 years in the making, starting as an idea in 2008 by students and staff in the UO Bike Program looking to expand services from its successful bike rental program. In 2012, the Bike Program suc-cessfully applied for a grant ($200K) from the ASUO to launch a bike share pilot program of four stations and 40 bikes on campus. The Bike Program had intended to launch the pilot program in 2013, but experienced delays that would be serendipitous. By 2015, the City of Eugene successfully applied for state grant money ($900K) to install a city bike share system and UO joined efforts with the City so that the campus stations would be part of the city-wide system. There are now eight stations on campus and several oth-ers nearby. Many were involved in making bike share a reality, including the Office of Campus Planning. Campus Planning aided the project, finding locations for stations, on and around campus, and served on the partners committee. They helped select the bike share ven-dor and worked to further the project navigating the university’s processes. UO members can ride for free for up to 15 minutes per day. It has been a pleasure walking into this new territory with Jeff, Tad, Jim, and others. The construction shop model has made much progress in a short amount of time, and I think we’re all working well together to continue this progress. I appreciate Jeff’s team’s willingness to hear feedback and be flexible with us as we figure out what works best for Facilities and D&C, while bringing their extensive knowledge of the trades to the table. This is a very exciting time and I look forward to the next few months as we really put the shops into action! Hi Ruby, I wanted to let you know the exposed rebar in front of Lillis has been fixed. Thank you for reporting it! There was a good amount of concrete missing creating a significant potential trip hazard. You have a great eye for safety! Please continue to report hazards you find. Thank you,
