Tread BrakeTread brakes secure casters from rolling by applying positive force the tread of the wheel. They are activated by a foot pedal on the side of the caster.

Total Lock BrakeTotal lock brakes secure casters from rolling and swiveling. They do this by applying positive pressure to the tread of the wheel and locking the swivel section. They are activated by a foot pedal on the trailing end of the caster.

Stainless steel castersAll of our caster series feature corrosion resistant plating or paint. Zinc plating is the most common, it provides reasonable protection against oxidation. Howev-er, in caustic or very wet applications, it does not perform well. That's when we recommend stainless steel.

Our customer, a fabricator of custom stainless equipment, was approached by a pharmaceutical manufacturer. They needed to design an FDA-compliant, auto-clave capable cart. The cart had to withstand 270°F pressurized steam so that its surfaces could be disinfected.

For applications that require a rugged, impact resistant swivel section our 71 Series Medium Duty Kingpinless Casters are the perfect solution. The single greatest point of failure in a swivel caster is the kingpin – the rivet or bolt that ties the fork and top plate together with the bearings between. Kingpinless casters, as the name implies, swivel without a kingpin. The swivel section of a kingpinpless caster ties the yoke and top plate together with a single race of ball bearings.

Why Kingpinless Casters?Swivel casters come in two distinct styles: traditional and kingpinless. In function they are identical, both providing an axis of rotation and directional control of the rolling stock. However, this is where the similarity ends. In design and form they are very different.

Traditional swivel sections employ riveted or nut-and-bolt kingpins to tie the upper and lower swivel races together. On our 44 series, this is a 3/4” diameter spun or staked rivet. As the casters are moved under load, shock loaded, or bounce on rougher terrain, a good amount of force is exerted on the kingpin. Over time the kingpin stretches and deforms. This loosens the swivel section and prevents proper swivel action.

Compared to the traditional swivel section, a kingpinless swivel section is by far much simpler. It is constructed of a top plate with a forged inner race, an outer race to which the legs are attached, and the ball bearings between the two pieces. This design completely eliminates the need for a kingpin, as the name kingpinless implies.

What Size Caster Do I Need?Casters come in a variety of sizes, from as small as 2" to as big as 24" in diameter and everything between. Choosing the right caster size is an important part of caster selection. Caster size affects capacity, rollability, weight, and price. Casters that are undersized can fail under load, be difficult to push, or seize up while rolling. When casters are over-sized, rolling stock may roll too easily and equipment becomes taller than it needs to be. The advanced materials in our ergonomic casters make them easy to roll and maneuver. Even with these advanced materials and designs, a caster that is sized incorrectly will perform poorly.

Here are four questions you should keep in mind when sizing casters for your next project:

• What is the total load of the cart, including material being transported and the empty weight of the cart?

• Will the cart be manually pushed and pulled or will it be towed by powered equipment?

• What kind of floors will the cart traverse?

• What kind of ride does the load require?

In general, heavier loads require larger casters. Your office chair

works great with 50mm twin wheel caster, a shop cart wouldn't. The

load also affects bearing selection. Heavier loads perform better with

precision bearings like precision ball bearings or tapered bearings.

Direction LockDirection locks use a fork to en-gage teeth on the bottom of the swivel section. When engaged the swivel caster will not rotate, effectively making it a rigid caster. This makes rolling stock easier to steer and control.

Total Lock BrakeTotal lock brakes secure casters from rolling and swiveling. They do this by applying positive pressure to the tread of the wheel and locking the swivel section. They are activated by a foot pedal on the trailing end of the caster.

Floor LocksFor most applications, caster brakes work well. Caster brakes do allow for some movement. Traditional caster brakes, like cam and tread brakes, allow the swivel section to move. Total lock brakes solve this problem, to an extent, by restraining the swivel section. Even with a total lock brake, hard tread wheels can slide across the floor.

Floor locks solve this problem by putting force against the ground. All floor locks feature a rubber coated foot to provide a high coefficient of friction, spring loaded cylinders for easy activation, and ergonomic peddles to reduce activa-tion force.
