At Ramapo for Children we believe that every young person has the ability to learn, grow, and contribute to the community. We believe in the power of authentic, caring, and respectful relationships to unlock a young person’s potential. With 97 years of experience in direct service and professional development, Ramapo has an extraordinary track record helping educators and other adults create environments that enable young people to celebrate strengths and experience success.

Dear Friends,There is an old parable about a group of blind men coming across an elephant for the first time. Each man touches a different part such as the tusk or the ear or the tail, and as a result, they emerge with very different beliefs about what an elephant actually is. Sometimes Ramapo is like that elephant. To schools, we are an organization that helps build the capacity of educators to support success for all students. To camp families, we are a program that celebrates children who are not always celebrated and who are often excluded. With all of our programs and services, one’s point of connection with Ramapo largely informs their perception of Ramapo and of our work.

So what is Ramapo? First and foremost, we are a community of people with a shared belief that all children deserve opportunities to learn, contribute, and thrive. We are a community of people with a shared commitment to dismantling barriers to participation for children and young adults who are too often labeled and excluded. We are a community of professionals who have adopted a particular approach to supporting young people, an

approach we apply in our own organization and teach others to apply in theirs. We are a community of educators and parents who want the best for all kids and know that they are often capable of much more than many think possible.

In this annual report, we have attempted to invite you into this wider Ramapo Community by sharing some personal narratives and individual perspectives on Ramapo’s work. It is our hope that through these stories and experiences you will better understand not only our philosophy and approach, but the tremendous impact we have on those who come into our orbit. While the stories are all different, unlike the experience of the blind men with the elephant, we hope that common themes and a more complete understanding of our organization will emerge.

Finally, if you’re reading this annual report, you are part of the Ramapo community as well. None of the work we do would be possible without our incredible partners and generous donors. On behalf of all of our children, families, and staff, we thank you. We are deeply grateful.

RAMAYEARS are recent college graduates who spend a year or more living and working on our Rhinebeck campus. They facilitate Ramapo Retreats and serve as roommates, mentors, and job coaches to Staff Assistants, supporting the develop-ment of social-emotional, independent living, and vocational skills.

“As a RamaYear, I worked to make sure that my roommate’s room was a space of minimal stress and that they could be comfortable studying for their classes. We’d plan and organize the important aspects of the day, whether it be keeping their room organized and clean or working on strategies to keep up to date on assignments. In the time I served as a RamaYear I gained a lot of skills that I couldn’t have gotten elsewhere.” —Current RamaYear

Josh has a lot to feel proud about. It’s been less than a year since he said goodbye to his Ramapo “family”—his mentors, staff, and friends from the Staff Assistant Experience (SAE), and Josh is living in an apartment with a roommate, cooking his own meals, driving to a full-time job, and taking a class at a nearby community college. “Life right now is very successful,” he says. For Josh, as for all Staff Assistants, Ramapo worked exceptionally hard to craft a program that helped him develop the living skills, social-emotional skills, and job skills to achieve an independence that can be elusive for many young people with disabilities. The SAE program is highly individualized, structured to help each participant align their strengths and interests with their aspirations.

One of the most important aspects of SAE is the opportunity to live and work alongside peer

role models. “My roommate and I had a special connection,” says Josh of the RamaYear mentor who lived with him on campus and served as a resource, companion, and role model for independent living. “We got along easily, we spent time together, and cooked meals together.” Mentors also work with Staff Assistants to establish goals, build confidence, and practice social interactions. While living on campus, Josh learned landscaping skills, volunteered, and eventually worked for a small landscaping business. “I learned to take feedback from others and how to work out tough situations with coworkers,” he says. As Josh and his family can attest, Ramapo’s SAE is a safe place to master living and job skills, make mistakes, and receive constructive feedback. “Josh really benefited from the Ramapo experience in so many ways, from learning to manage his time and calendar to interacting with his peers and adults,” says his mom, Tracey. “I have seen a lot of growth in him in the past few years.” Josh has been living independently and successfully maintaining his job since June 2018.

WHEN LIVINGINDEPENDENTLY IS

THE GOAL

Staff Assistant Experience

STAFF ASSISTANT EXPERIENCE is a residential transition-to-independence program for young adults with social, emotional, and learning challenges. SAE is designed for individuals who desire the opportunity to improve and reinforce interpersonal, independent living, and job skills.

Ramapo Training

For nearly 20 years, Ramapo has helped myriad teachers develop the skills and strategies to promote positive behaviors in their classrooms and engage students in learning; particularly kids who are punished, excluded, and labeled. But classrooms don’t exist in a vacuum and neither do Ramapo’s programs. As such, our work with school partners has expanded beyond the classroom, bringing Ramapo’s approach and expertise to school leaders, student support staff, teachers, and others as they work to improve whole school climate and make their schools more equitable and inclusive. This is an important shift; evidence points to a strong connection between a positive school climate—including core values, safe shared

spaces, supportive student-adult relationships, restorative disciplinary practices—and positive student outcomes.

Ramapo’s whole-school approach is evident at the Community School for Social Justice in the Bronx, a high school that is part of NYC’s Restorative Justice Pilot. Our work began in 2016, intervening at multiple touchpoints—i.e. working with school leaders to define core values, set clear community expectations, form a restorative justice action team, provide mediation and circle training, strengthen classroom advisory groups, and introduce restorative reintegration plans for students who have been suspended. “There has been a huge improvement of CSSJ’s culture because as a community we have been strategic with our support to students and staff,” says Principal Jaime Guzman. “Attendance and credit accumulation has increased because our students are invested in holding community circles, participating and leading mediations, and enjoy being in a calm, supportive, and caring environment.”

PROMOTING POSITIVE CHANGE: FROM CLASSROOM

TO WHOLE SCHOOL

RAMAPO TRAINING is a professional development program providing educators, youth workers, caregivers, and parents with practical tools and strategies for promoting positive behavior, fostering social and emotional skill development, and creating safe communities marked by belonging and connection.

Through ADVANCED CLASSP, Ramapo provides college-age youth workers with training and field experience in inclusive after school programming for youth. The curriculum, which draws heavily from the Ramapo model and approach, is designed to guide participants as they also complete 200 hours of supervised internships.

“I am planning to major in special education and to actually become a special education teacher due to this internship experience because I love seeing how my kids grow and improve.” —Advanced CLASSP participant

Ramapo Retreats

Leadership is a quality that is encouraged and celebrated in all of Ramapo’s retreat programs. This is clearly the case for the 40 teens with special needs who spend one weekend per month at the Rhinebeck campus as participants in the Ramapo Leadership Program (RLP). There, participants experience a community of true peers, highlight strengths, and learn the skills and confidence to develop as individuals and leaders. Brandon, 17, eagerly looks forward to his weekend retreats and has built lasting friendships through the program. “The weekends on campus reinforce social skills, activities of daily living, how to interact with peers, how to interact with adults, and how

to care for his body,” says his mom. “Brandon has been much more aware of manners and etiquette,” she adds, “and his behavior has really improved.”

Weekends take on themes such as building relationships, navigating social media and online safety, stress management, or nutrition and fitness, and they always include community service and outdoor experiences. Staff mentors check in weekly by phone with participants, continuing social skill development, celebrating successes, and providing added guidance and support around issues and challenges the participant may be facing. The true benefit of RLP is providing a safe, encouraging environment that allows leaders to emerge. As one mom whose son dreams of being a camp counselor one day puts it, “For us, Ramapo is family. Christian lives for going back there because he just feels so accepted and valued.”

GROWING LEADERSONE WEEKEND

AT A TIME

RAMAPO RETREATS are short-term, adventure- based experiences for young people, educators, and community-based organizations that offer participants strategies for successful communication, teamwork, and leadership. Programming is year- round on Ramapo’s 250-acre Rhinebeck campus.

For 17 years, ninth graders from Eleanor Roosevelt High School have traveled to our Rhinebeck campus for a kick-off RAMAPO RETREAT that the principal calls “the ultimate ice breaker.” Activities include hikes, a campfire, and community-building challenges on the ropes courses that support the underlying trust and group rapport that is a hallmark of the school.

“Ramapo retreats provide an opportunity for students and adults to build the initial bonds that will then grow and strengthen during the entire academic year and beyond.” —Principal, Eleanor Roosevelt High School

“Ramapo is a wonderful camp that fosters emotional growth, positive self-awareness, self-confidence, and a readiness for the adventures of life ahead. It’s an experience that every child should be able to have.” —Camper Parent

For 97 years, CAMP RAMAPO has been a haven for families searching for a traditional summer camp experience for children of all abilities. The activities are familiar; swimming, arts and crafts, campfires, and hikes—to name a few. But the careful attention of staff and a focus on skill-building is what allows so many campers to thrive.

With evening approaching, the teen girls from the Hill area are center stage, performing a self- choreographed dance to the popular song “I Love Me,” closing out yet another epic Camp Ramapo talent show. As strains of the song fade and the audience snaps their appreciation, each girl walks up to the microphone and tells their fellow campers and staff what they love about them-selves. A surround sound of snapping and cheering ensues.

“I think it’s my favorite night of the year,” says Meredith, a camp leader at Ramapo who helped organize this and six other talent shows over the years. It is an event that perfectly encapsulates what is so unique about Camp Ramapo—a place where children facing a wide range of social, emotional, and cognitive challenges can feel safe, accepted, and encouraged to grow in unexpected ways.

The format is pretty standard; one hour, 10-15 acts, an appreciative, rambunctious audience, and a crowd-pleasing MC who keeps things rolling along. But Camp Ramapo’s talent show is anything

but ordinary. Preparation begins the first week of each session when counselors and staff present their own wacky collection of solo and group acts, letting kids know that “talent” can be telling jokes with a friend, doing impressions, or a group dance—and at the end, everyone cheers. “There’s so much role-modeling done by counselors that kids are swept up in it,” says Kayla, an assistant director of program and current RamaYear.

Relationships and community building come into play when a bunk or even an entire area like the Hill comes together to choose music and rehearse a dance during free time. And most of all, the talent show, like all camp activities, is designed to provide the opportunity for all kids to feel successful, whatever their individual needs. That looks like a counselor holding a child’s hand while they sing, campers choosing to work on creating costumes and sets, others making playlists—and dress rehearsals to help performers feel comfortable and give audience members a chance to practice respectful viewing. “We really do try to identify individual strengths and celebrate them,” says Kayla, “giving kids the opportunity to shine in a world where that might not happen very often.”
