Note from the Editor:Note from the Editor: We have some important events coming up, including Florida Day at Moosehaven on March 20th, which is an all-day affair with a picnic and vendors and enter-tainment. Of course, in April we have our FBMA Mid-year Conference at the Rosen Plaza in Orlando. Infor-mation, including reservation forms, can be found in this issue. You can also register on line and hopefully you have reserved your rooms as they go fast. There will be a Solar Polar Plunge on Thursday during the Conference that will benefit the Moosehaven Centen-nial project. It will take place at 4:00 out at the pool. In May, I’ll be heading up to Mooseheart to hand out the laptops to the graduating seniors. This will be the 8th year we have done this and our 9th consecutive year making that trip. This is a project funded by Moose Riders not only in Florida, but across the country. It is the same weekend as the annual Bless-ing of the Bikes (May 21) and we’re hoping for anoth-er great year. Here at home, we have elections and installations for new LOOM and WOTM Boards of Officers, who will be taking over for the 2016-17 year. Theirs will not be an easy job and we are counting on them to motivate their membership and to lay more bricks to strength-en our foundation. Now, more than ever, your Lodge needs your support and your participation. In July, many of you will be heading up to St. Louis for the International Convention, where some will be re-ceiving honors such as their Fellowship degree, Acad-emy of Friendship, Star Recorder and College of Re-gents. Information about that convention, as well as the mail-in registration form and preliminary schedule are also in this issue. Like our state conference, online registration and hotel booking are available. Check it out on the Moose International website at www.mooseintl.org. Log in to the members section and proceed to the convention page. I hope that you enjoy reading about the efforts of your brothers and co-workers in this issue. As al-ways, they have gone out of their way to do some-thing good for many people these past few months. —Joan Fedora

Conference and any time you hear your Lodge, Chapter or Moose Legion mentioned ring that bell. We also want you to bring them to the International Convention in St. Louis and do the same whenever you hear Florida or any Florida unit. Remember the Florida delegation always sits FRONT LEFT (FL).

Be sure you make the Mid Year and make it fun for all. There will be a great deal of information shared and there are several breakout sessions scheduled on Friday and Saturday. We are trying to shorten the sessions so your butt won’t get too tired of sitting. So come on to Orlan-do and get informed and have a ball, or bell.

We have a couple of Heart Of The Community Projects at the Mid Year for you to participate in. We are having a non-perishable food drive for the Second Harvest of Central Florida and we are asking for toiletries for the Coalition for the Homeless. Please be generous to help out these two deserving agencies.

I want to take time in this article to thank you for all you have done for the past 10 months and all you are going to do to finish the year strong. Many of you have served in offices and served as chairmen and many of you will do so in the coming year. Just remember to never get discouraged and to keep doing the things that make our fraternity great. Don’t listen to the naysayers around you, but focus on those with a positive attitude and you and our fraternity will grow.

See you in Orlando in April. God bless Mooseheart and Moosehaven and God bless you all.

Jerry Monk Territory Manager/Liaison

Moose—Build Our Foundation

We are down to the last two months of the year and we must be vigilant to our number of active members. March is a huge dues month here in Flori-da for our Lodges, Chap-ters and Moose Legions. Every Administrator, Re-corder and Secretary should print the list of

those expiring in March early in the month and share it with the Retention Committee so they can be proactive contacting those members who have not yet paid and remind them to pay their dues. Let them know how im-portant it is to do so, as a portion of their dues supports Mooseheart and Moosehaven. We can be “Plus 1” on April 30, 2016, if we all work together to make it happen. We must stop the decline in our membership if we are to survive for another 120 years. Our children and seniors are depending on us.

Our Association has taken on a large amount of the Moosehaven Centennial Project and we need your sup-port to accomplish this task. Each Lodge, Chapter, Moose Legion, Council Of Higher Degrees and Moose Riders have been asked to donate $2.00 per member per year for a three year period, a total of $6.00 for the pro-ject. Hold some 50/50 raffles or other projects to raise the money. Be creative and, if you find something that works, share it so everyone else can try what you have done. There are other opportunities for you to help. We are selling cow bells to raise funds a well. Make sure you purchase yours in advance of the upcoming Mid Year

Mid Year Conference is at the Rosen Plaza in Orlan-do, April 14th to 17th. I would love to see a bunch of new attendees. It's close enough for a lot of us to come up for just a day. You'll get a lot of first-hand information.

Thank you for what you are doing and what you will do.

Remember "Do Your Very Best in Every Situation."

Fred Van Nostrand F.B.M.A. President

The last quarter is upon us; we need to give this time more effort to address retention and recovery. We seem to do a good job signing new applicants, but fail to keep them. There are some Lodges that are exceptions. You all see the numbers when your Territory Managers send them out. Maybe, perhaps, send an e-mail to one and pick their brain and ask what programs they're running that are working so well for them. Most important though, you must do something.

The Nominating Committee should (by now) be hard at its task to identify and nominate the best qualified candi-dates, men that will be the Leaders of your Lodge. Again I say check your Membership numbers, your finances, Endowment fund giving, monies owed to International, and get familiar with what it takes to make your Year End Premier Lodge Award.. Don't wait until the last mi-nute.

March 20th is Florida Day at Moosehaven. If you haven't been there you really need to visit so that when asked to make a donation you'll know just how important it is be-cause you were there and you saw the work the Moose does here.

Hello Co-Workers,

The 2016 Florida Mid-Year Conference will be here before we know it. Are you ready??? Here are the Top 10 Reasons for WOTM co-workers to at-tend the 2016 Mid-Year Conference:

10. You can now register on-line (even matriculants) and order meal tickets at

the FBMA website (www.floridamoose.com). Easy Peasy, Lemon-Squeezy. Mail in registrations are still ac-cepted though!

9. You will be in Orlando and can enjoy the sights on International Drive.

8. You can enjoy Fun Night on Thursday and maybe win something.

7. You can learn about the different WOTM committees and how you can get involved.

6. You can give a gift to Moose Charities and receive one in return.

5. You have a chance to be the winner of one of the 50/50 drawings.

4. You can count it as a mini-vacation. Take the week-end to refresh and recharge your Moose batteries.

3. You will be able to see friends from across the state that you only have a chance to see twice a year. You may even make new friends. Lifelong friendships have devel-oped from these conferences.

2. You can share winning ideas with other co-workers or take back a new idea for your own chapter.

1. You will learn something new. GUARANTEED!

Looking forward to seeing you all in Orlando in April. As always, Sparkle On Florida!

the tornados that touched down in the state.

But, equally noble is what we do every day of the year for children at Mooseheart and seniors at Moosehaven. To maintain the level of service that we have always unself-ishly given to our children and seniors, we must re-commit to the basic and fundamental promises we made to this fraternity the day we were enrolled: to strengthen the Defending Circle by signing members and supporting Mooseheart and Moosehaven with our energy and sub-stance.

One of the fraternal programs we have, the Rocker fund benefits our seniors. February is Rocker Fundraiser month where each of our units is asked to raise funds for our senior members at Moosehaven. The Moosehaven Centennial Project will leave a lasting example of our commitment to make the lives of our senior members better. As with the Mooseheart School Project, we will rise to the challenge because we care, because that is what we have done and will continue to do for the next hundred years and beyond.

Charity does begin at home, and while “Building our Foundation” we need to bring it home.

Regional Manager Sam Harris

Community Service is one of the core missions of the Moose Fraternity. Since its inception in the late 1940s, our fraternity’s program of community service has been both proud and extensive. Charity to others, espe-cially children and seniors in need, is a fundamental precept of our great fra-ternity. This rich tradition

must never stop. It is time to form the Defending Circle and concentrate our efforts on protecting our own chil-dren and seniors entrusted to our care at Mooseheart and Moosehaven.

IRS regulations permit lodges and chapters to conduct fundraisers open to the public, if the “net” proceeds go for charitable purposes. Unquestionably, fundraisers to aid families suffering a catastrophe, to help children in-flicted with a terrible disease, and to benefit local worth-while charities are noble humanitarian endeavors of the highest calling. We have stepped up time and again as our members provide aid to those in our community that have been hit by drastic flooding and even more recent

—Chicago. Roaring 1920s. Prohibition. That was the setting for the Grand Opening of a new Speakeasy at Quincy Moose Lodge to celebrate the ap-pointments of Dawn Mackland as Deputy Grand Regent and Bill Mulligan as Deputy Supreme Governor. With gangsters, hit men, politicians, a jazz singer and many other interesting guests in attendance, it was a night full of backstabbing, bribery, extortion, deceit, fun and laughter. The well-known father of the Chicago mob, Don “Big Jim” Ravioli, had a very important announcement that he was going to make during the Grand Opening but, before he could make this announcement, the lights mysteriously went out. When the lights came back on, Big Jim was found mur-dered. Inspector Neville “The Nose” Nutella fortunate-ly was on hand to investigate and find the murderer. Was it up-and-coming Carrie Crooner-Ravioli, his 19-year-old jazz singer wife who married him just to be dis-covered? His ex-wife, Vicky Ravioli, who he divorced to marry Carrie but did not appear to be too grieved by the divorce? His mother, Baroness Ravioli, who stood to inherit a great deal through Big Jim’s will? His daughter, Rebecca Ravioli who Big Jim ordered to marry Capo “Toto” Tequila, the Boss of Bosses from New York? Or could it have been Al Capone who was moving up in the “Family”? What about Don Wannabe and Madam MeMe who were suspected of skimming a fortune from Big Jim? Many, many more were suspected of Big Jim’s murder and also several other murders throughout the night. But . . . you had to have been there to discover who done it. Submitted by Dawn “MeMe” Mackland

MOOSEHAVEN

As I drove through the gate to await my new fate, I was met with smiling faces to put me through my paces. They all were so nice and gave me such great advice: Only believe ten percent of what you hear and you will never have any fear. I didn't even need a broom as so clean was my given room. At my first meal I was met with such zeal: No more do I have to cook and peeling of vegetables I'm off the hook. Put on your good pants and come to our dance; You don't need a date and you might meet a new soul mate. Six days a week at the gym and on Sunday you get to sing a hymn. They gave me a bike and I no longer have to hike

A New Resident Describes His New “Home For Evermore”

Off to the warm pool, my mother didn't raise a fool. Bowled my first alley, but did find the valley. Not a pin did I drop; at this sport I'm a flop. Met many new brothers, and then there were others Who I did reacquaint, whose memory had not gone faint. Now that I'm here we can go for a beer, So happy am I that I did apply. It’s so far above the bar, I give it an extra star. I feel like Poe's Raven here at our beloved Moosehaven; I'll never be sore and I’ll be here for evermore. "I think they all learned from it," Schlinkmann said. "It was one of the best groups. They all withstood the bucket, which was good to see. I'm always amazed every year that some of these structures hold more than you'd think."

Schlinkmann has fond memories of the contest, which he inaugurated at Mooseheart in 1987 in a contest won by E.J. Viking. The record for most weight sustained before a bridge broke belongs to Adrianna Tezanos-Pinto, whose 2007 bridge held 71 pounds.

"I went back and looked my list of all the people who had won, and I said 'oh, I remember this person' and 'I remember that bridge,'" Schlinkmann said. "It's a bit of a trip down memory lane, to think of all the people who have been in your class. It's one of the ways I connect with the students, with their bridges."

Photo and story courtesy of Moose International website

Mooseheart, IL, January 11 – The sounds of snapping balsa wood mixed with cheers and groans from classmates is a familiar one in early January at Mooseheart, when for 30 years Curt Schlinkmann's physics class students have par-ticipated in a bridge breaking competition.

This year, the champion was Jeff Leigh, whose bridge withstood 31.7 pounds in a bucket suspended from the center of his bridge before it snapped.

"I think I learned what we were supposed to take away from this experience," Leigh said. "I was proud of my bridge and proud that I cared and took the time I put into it."

From the planning stage through construction and finally into Mooseheart's 30th annual bridge breaking contest, Leigh's balsa-and-glue construction was a bridge designed for success.

"I put about 23 hours of work into it, in eight or nine stages over a four-day period," Leigh said. "The most important part was to make a plan before I started, where I calculated how much stuff I had and how much I could use."

Leigh said he spent two days designing his bridge be-fore he started construction, making calculations to determine the best way to build his bridge.

"I was pretty confident I was going to win," Leigh said. "I was sure I was going to get an A on the project. But after John (Turton) went and his held 19.5 pounds, I was really nervous because, of course, I had never tested my bridge and there could have been a mis-take I hadn't recognized."

Turton finished second with his construction. Lezly Romero's bridge held 15.6 pounds and was third in the 10-person competition. Schlinkmann praised this year's bridge builders, all seniors, who brought a vari-ety of styles to the contest.

The Lakeshore Moose Lodge 2020 Moose Legion Com-mittee, hosts a Christmas party each year in December for the Moosehaven residents. Our menu featured our Fried Chicken, which the residents really seem to enjoy, along with desserts. A good time was had by all, espe-cially the Lakeshore volunteers who look forward to this each year.

COMMUNITY SERVICE—Special Olympics Polar Plunge Heard of Moose Team Raises $8000 and Makes Top Ten List Again

through its members who are challenged with raising enough funds to qualify and spreading the news about what Special Olympics does. This year one of our Lodg-es and Chapters sponsored two Special Olympics Ath-letes into the plunge. They joined our team and took to

the water like heroes! Thanks to the Zeph-yrhills Moose Lodge and Chapter for show-ing what many hands can do to make a dif-

ference in someone's life. As the fun continued all day, our

team racked up over $8,000 in donations--all for Special Olym-

pic Athletes in Florida. Thanks to all the participants, plungers, fund-

raisers, supporters, and donators… The FBMA “Heard of Moose” Team

made the Top Ten List again in 2016 Submitted by W. Scott Duncan

The water was a chilly 54 degrees at plunge time. Plung-ers from many different areas of the State of Florida joined together to bathe in the coldness and raise over $200, 000 for Special Olympics Programs throughout Florida. Special Olympics was founded in 1968 to pro-vide year-round sports training and competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities, at no cost to the athlete or their caregiver. The program is a means for these athletes to achieve physical fitness, self-esteem, socializa-tion skills, and the life skills neces-sary to be productive, respected and contributing members of their communities. Sponsored by SeaWorld and the Florida Professional Firefighters, this annual event has grown and raised over $1.6 Million since starting in 2009. The Florida Bermuda Moose Association supports the Heart of the Community event by promoting participation

The FBMA Heard of Moose Team took part in the 2016 Special Olympics Polar Plunge at SeaWorld's Aquatica on February 13, 2016.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Homeless assist in every aspect of the ser-vice including testimonies, communion, scripture reading and music. I personally take socks, washcloths, fresh fruit and personal items each week. An-other member made goodie bags for us to hand out one week with granola and candy in it. My 6 year old granddaughter and I prepared and served sausage gravy and

homemade biscuits 2 weeks in a row and made home made oatmeal and fresh fruit another week. They are very appreciative of anything I have done and always of-fer to help unload or serve. This has been one of the most touching Community Ser-vice things I have been blessed to be a part of for myself and my Chapter 1142, Ocala FL. Thank you. Ocala Chapter Works in Conjunction with Local Organization

About 2 months ago I started helping with and Organi-zation called Wear Gloves Inc. (weargloves.org) on Sat-urday mornings at 8:30 AM with feeding and helping the homeless. The last Saturday of the month they have Church service and Communion for the homeless. Church in the Garden is a street worship organized and coordinated by WG in areas where our distressed friends live. We bring all resources together to worship Jesus with different churches, groups and street friends.

The Brandon Lodge has had some traditions for holiday giving for 18 years, and some for only a few. Each year seems to bring new challenges. In traditional style, the season kicked off with a Thanksgiving food drive for Metropolitan Minis-tries, serving thousands of families in the Tampa area. Members of Brandon Lodge collected 400 pounds of food and $1100.00, which was matched by a corporate giving challenge. Onward to the Christmas season where once again the Angel tree was surrounded by many gifts and bikes for foster children in Hillsborough County. A year- long fundraiser, called ‘Santa’s Work-shop”, headed by ‘Santa and his elves” once again brought cheer to hundreds of families, with visits to schools, migrant centers, nursing homes, reha-bilitation centers, as well as private families in need, caroling and dropping off gifts for all. This merry group, ranging in age from 2 – 80, contrib-uted over a thousand hours preparing for this holiday season. Submitted by Lois Myers

Liberty Manor Christmas at the North Hillsboro Lodge 1741/1763 COMMUNITY SERVICE

Our Jr. Governor /Community Service Chair-man, Tony Prosperi and his wife Ruthie (a WOTM member) wanted to fix a home cooked Christmas dinner for our Veteran’s at Liberty Manor but needed to be able to do this at the Lodge. So Tony turned this dinner into a Com-munity Service project for the Lodge and, since he was cooking a meal, he and the Officers de-cided that any member who wanted to eat at the Lodge was welcome to do so. The WOTM got involved and made up gift bags for the 22 male Veteran’s from Liberty Manor and for 16 female Veteran’s at Athena House. The WOTM also held their annual food drive, which was also do-nated to Liberty Manor. Tony held various func-tions to raise money for this project. Everyone thought the day went well. Each male Veteran also received a gift card and a baseball style cap with the branch of service that they were in. This past Sunday at our District meeting, North Hills-boro Lodge presented a check for $718 to Liber-ty Manor for donations/money collected. Submitted by Kathy Landis

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Annual Tradition Provides Tommy Moose Dolls to Nearby Shelter and Non-Profit Tommy Moose and Christmas have become an annual tradition at Naples, FL, Moose Lodge 1782. On Dec. 7, 2015, members presented two dozen Tommy Moose dolls to the women's and children's shelter at St. Mat-thew's House. In some cases a Tommy Moose doll may be the only Christmas gift a youngster receives. Our next stop was to Lee Healthpark in Ft. Myers, FL, on Dec. 19, where we have supported the efforts of Team Charlie, Inc. for several years. Each year this non-profit provides toys, games and gift cards to all the young patients at this hospital. Lodge 1782 was on hand with two dozen Tommy Moose dolls and two packages of Tommy Moose coloring books. Santa and his elves visited all five pediatric units and every child received a gift. Inverness Chapter 1773 Honors Co-Workers and Hosts Halloween Party LODGE AND CHAPTER NEWS

Inverness Chapter 1773 honored Kimberly Common during their Green Cap Meeting on January 10, 2016. Kimberly joined the Chapter in January 2012 after her mother and sponsor, Sylvia Common, brought her to a WOTM Tea Social. She has been high-ly involved in the Moose ever since, and sponsored eight men and women into the Moose fraternity. She is currently the Junior Graduate Regent and received her Green Cap from capping officer Carole Fletcher in September 2015. The Chapter held their College of Regents Meeting/Ceremony in November, celebrating new Collegian Tonya Griffith, Red Tassel Recipient Lola Smitley, and Red Stole Recipient Dora Lathan. It included over 20 collegians from throughout Central and North Central Florida, two Past Deputy Grand Regents (Vickie Poulsen and Cherry Runion), and Grand Council Member and Chapter An-alyst Coordinator Gloria Petrea. The Children's Halloween Party at the Inverness Moose Lodge 2112 is an annual event hosted by the WOTM Chapter 1773. This year's event was chaired by Paula Hanley. Over 20 children partici-pated in the event that included making a ghost craft, games, food and the annual Halloween Costume Parade through the Lodge. Prizes for best costumes in several age brackets and categories were handed out at the end of the event. Submitted by Kimberly Common Top near right: Kimberly Common is honored at Green Cap meeting. My granddaughter Skye Dyer was recently crowned Miss Desoto County during the County Fair. While I call her my granddaughter, she is not actually blood related. Her stepmother is my granddaughter, Rose Fairweather. 2 years ago Skye was 1st runner-up in the Jr Miss Desoto County and this past January she competed in the Miss Desoto County Pageant and won.

Her sponsor was the Arcadia Moose Lodge 1327 and was also sponsored by the women’s Chapter 1597. The Lodge paid her sponsor fee and the Chapter is providing her wardrobe for the events she will attend for the year. The pageant is part of the week long activities during our Desoto County Fair held each January.

We are so grateful for the support of Arcadia Lodge and Chapter. The Lodge has posted signs in the Lodge stat-ing that Arcadia Lodge 1327 is the sponsor of the 2016 Miss Desoto County, Skye Dyer. We are all very proud. Submitted by a very proud Jim “Grumpy” Malsbury
