MATHS - Powers (Indices)

Learning Intention:I can explain what different indices mean.Success Criteria:I have solved different equations using indices.Learning Resources Required:Exercise book, pencils, and iphone/tablet/computer.Learning Task:

Index notation is a shortened way of expressing how many times a number needs to bemultiplied by itself. It is used especially frequently in computer science.

Index notation is also commonly referred to as ‘squared’ or ‘to the power of’.The index notation refers specifically to the indice. That’s the small number on the top right thattells you how many times a number should be multiplied. The number expressed in the indicetells you how many times you should see the number in your equation.

You can see above that 5 with an index of 3 means that there needs to be 3 different 5s in yourequation. 5 x 5 = 25. 25 x 5 = 125. Therefore, 5 to the power of 3 = 125.

Page 4: 2. TUESDAY, Grade 5/6 Week 10, Term 3

Gembrook Primary School Remote Learning Tasks

Five to the power of 2 or more commonly referred to as 5 squared denotes 2 5’s in the equation.

Solve the following indice equations, ensure that you show your working out as well as I havebelow:66 = 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 =

1. 6 = 62. 6 x 6 = 363. 36 x 6 = 2164. 216 x 6 = 12965. 1296 x 6 = 7,7766. 7,716 x 6 = 46,656

Therefore 6 to the power of 6 = 46,656

SPELLING

Learning Intention:I can understand the effect of the ‘-ist’ suffix on base words.Success Criteria: I have used my knowledge of common blends, digraphs and trigraphs to form words.Learning Resources Required:Exercise book, pencils, and iphone/tablet/computer

Learning Task and ResponseThe suffix -ist changes nouns, verbs, and adjectives into nouns.

Page 5: 2. TUESDAY, Grade 5/6 Week 10, Term 3

Gembrook Primary School Remote Learning Tasks

Like several of the other suffixes we have interacted with this term it has multiple meanings:- a person who works with…- a person who is connected with…- a person who believes in…

1. Draw up a 3 column table like the one below. Try and record as many word examples ofthe different meanings of the ‘-ist’ suffix. Is one more common than the others?

works with connected believes in

harpistreceptionist

specialistenvironmentalist

idealist

2. As always, it is important to identify any generalisations regarding the addition of a suffixand how it may change the base word (also known as the stem). Record the followingwords into your workbook. Create a word sum for each and comment on the impact onthe base word. Identify any generalisations, such as dropping an /e/ or doubling aconsonant. Think of ways to demonstrate your understanding in a clear manner - youmight like to use a category table.

- cartoonist - minimalist - tourist- cyclist - illusionist - novelist- journalist - motorist - chemist- typist - artist - psychologist- finalist - pharmacist

BREAK: ensure students have a well-earned break with lunch, rest and a game/physical activity.
