South Dakota Tech Welcomes Dr. Charles Ruch

The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology welcomed Dr. Charles Ruchto campus as the university's 17th president. He comes to South Dakota Techafter serving as president of Boise State University in Boise, Idaho.

"I'm glad to be here," Ruch said. "I'm excited to work with everyone on campus totake this wonderful university to a new level of excellence. I also look forward toworking with my colleagues at other universities to find ways to enhance the edu-cational opportunities available to students, and with community organizationsand agencies that want to join with us to make Rapid City and the Black Hills evenbetter places to live."

Ruch succeeds Dr. Richard Gowen, who left campus June 30, 2003 after 16 years as Tech's president.South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds appointed Gowen director of the Homestake Laboratory ConversionProject.

"I was very inter-ested in the work under way here in South Dakota to link higher education and economic development,"he said. "Public higher education has much to offer by way of its research capacity and faculty expert-ise to South Dakota's economic development resources."

Ruch will also focus on new ways to collaborate with Tech's sister institution at Black Hills StateUniversity. "South Dakota Tech and Black Hills State have complementary missions," Regents PresidentHarvey C. Jewett said. "We are anxious to put Dr. Ruch's leadership, in concert with Black Hills StatePresident Tom Flickema, to work in this area."

Ruch has doctorate and master's degrees in education from Northwestern University, and a bachelor'sdegree in chemistry from The College of Wooster in Ohio. Prior to his time at Boise State, Ruch served11 years at Virginia Commonwealth University - - first as an associate dean and dean, and for theremaining six years as provost and vice president for academic affairs. His first university assignmentscame at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a faculty member and department chair.
