HARDROCKER BASKETBALLSEASON OUTLOOK

Hardrockers returns experience, talent for 2006-07 campaign

By Brad BlumeSports Information Director

To be a successful basketball program, one of the cru-cial ingredients is to have experienced and talented play-ers that can lead the team and show them how to win.

The 2006-07 South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockershave that in spades.

Mines rosters five seniors --- all playing together a yearago --- and all have started at different times throughoutlast season. Tack on a NCAA Division I transfer from NorthDakota State and the lineup is that much more solidifiedas the season gets set to start.

“With having five seniors and a pretty big transfer (stu-dent), we definitely want to finish in the top half of theconference and then have a chance to win the (DAC)tournament and go on and get to the national tourna-ment,” said Hardrocker head coach Jason Henry (in hissecond season at the helm). “Our feeling right now, withour seniors, is they’ve done what we’ve asked them to do,in the postseason, preseason and spring --- now it’s just amatter of getting out there and trying to get it done.”

Losing three key contributors in Tom Schmitz, SamirAdams and Dave Lainhart will slow the ‘Rockers transi-tion. But Adams missed the second half of last season, giving others down the roster a chance to get some min-utes. Lainhart, who was set to return to the team as astarting guard, decide to seek an employment opportuni-ty this past August which opened another spot on theroster. But with the quality of players that are back, Henryshould have little trouble finding replacements.

This year’s seniors are: Casey Schmitz (6-foot-7 post )from Williston, N.D., Matt Lyndoe (6-6, forward ) fromCuster, S.D., Blake Tideman (6-2, guard) from Winner, S.D.,Brandon Lord (6-4, guard) out of Taylorsville, Utah, andBrandon Fredrickson (6-7, guard) from Ft. Collins, Colo.

Schmitz was a Dakota Athletic Conference second-team selection last year leading the team in scoring(fourth in the DAC) with 459 total points, averaging 15.8a game.

“He’s going to have an opportunity to go away from thebasket a little bit more this year but we will still do every-thing we can to get him (looks) around the basket. Hewas one of the top players in the league last year,” Henrysaid.

Lyndoe is another threat underneath who is on pace tobreak 1,000 points this season. Last year he averaged 12points a game and pulled down 4.8 rebounds.

“He brings a different dimension,” Henry said of Lyn-doe. “He can (defend) about every position from the postto the point guard. Offensively he is just strong with theball and finishes the 15-footers and gets to the basket.”

Tideman saw some quality minutes last season, startingat different times throughout the year. Henry said hisgame has improved a lot in a year’s time and should bequite an impact player this time around for the Hardrock-ers.

“He’s getting to be more consistent, especially shoot-ing wise, but just decision wise too,” Henry said. “He hasthe opportunity to have a breakout year for us. He has alot of confidence right now and we are expecting bigthings out of him.”

Tideman averaged 5.4 points a game in 2005-06 andtwo rebounds each game.

Page 6: SD MInes 2006-07 Men's Basketball Media Guide

5

HARDROCKER BASKETBALLSEASON OUTLOOK

Lord also had a productive season last year. His 12points and seven rebounds each game really gave theHardrockers a sense of balance both offensively as well ason defense.

“He is a consistent guy that got us 12 points a game andseven rebounds --- from the guard position,” Henry said.“He is pretty aggressive and just really ‘basketball savvy’and that helps us big time --- making plays that otherguys aren’t capable of.”

Fredrickson transferred into SDSMT last year and adds acertain element to the mix. His height may be deceptive.Standing 6-7, one might think he is strictly an inside play-er, but Fredrickson is a lot more comfortable squaring upfrom the outside and sinking shots. He averaged 8.6points last year and probably has the best accuracy onthis year’s team.

“He’s a guy that can shoot the ball from anywhere. He isjust a little streaky at times,” Henry said. “If we can gethim more consistent in shooting the ball, he is probablythe best spot-up guy we have on the team.”

Throw in Brown and the ‘Rockers look pretty intimidat-ing. Playing for the Bison last season, Brown saw somequality minutes and earned valuable experience.

“Anytime you can get a guy that is 6-8, 250 pounds thatcan run and jump and play at his skill level --- you got agood chance to do some good things,” Henry said. “He isso aggressive rebounding wise.”

The coach added that Brown will be able to get a lot ofsecond-chance opportunities that may get him or evenhis teammates some extra points.

“We do a lot of four-out stuff where we have fourperimeter guys and then a guy inside,” Henry said. “Nowwith (Brown) as well as Casey (underneath), it’s an oppor-tunity to run three on the perimeter and two guys inside.”

The list of players goes much deeper. Also returning to the Mines team from last year is Bran-

don Smith (6-8, sophomore, forward) and Jace Sullivan(6-3, sophomore, guard). Smith stepped up last yearwhen Adams got hurt. Smith had a few big games andwas able to build some confidence that Henry said hasspilled over to this season. Sullivan, who was the backuppoint guard behind Lainhart last year, has suddenly beenpromoted and Henry feels good about his abilities.

Don DeGooyer (6-6, sophomore, forward), from GreatFalls, Mont., was the Montana 5A Player of the Year, red-shirted last year and is ready to contribute. Henry said heis aggressive and can shoot the ball which could createsome matchup problems for opposing teams.

Robbie Fedor (6-1, freshman, guard) was an all stateplayer out of Monticello, Minn. He is used to playing the

No. 2 position where he can score a lot of points. Henrydescribes him as an athletic kid that can get the job done.

That leaves “Big” John Madsen. Madsen is a freshmanfrom Parker, Colo., who stands 6-10. He doesn’t have a lotof mass and according to Henry, is not a “back to the bas-ket” type of player. But he is still is a threat with his touchfrom the outside.

“This is probably one of the deeper teams we’ve had,”Henry said of the lineup. “Being with the academics thatwe have and just our situations --- typically we don’t geta ton of kids to be as deep as we are. This year I think wehave 11 to 12 guys that can help us at basically everyspot.”

And with the up-tempo format that Henry wants toinstall, the more guys the better.

“We are going to play a style where you have to usemore guys --- picking up opponents 90 feet from the bas-ket,” the coach said. “We are going to be doing somepressing, but not necessarily trying to get the gamegoing a lot faster, but instead extending the floor. Youhave to use more guys.”

The Hardrockers looked to be very balanced. WithBrown and Schmitz drawing attention in the paint, thatmight free up the perimeter players like Fredrickson, Lyn-doe and Lord to attack from the outside --- and vise versa.

Looking at the conference, Henry feels that MayvilleState seems to be the top of the class. The Comets havebeen to the NAIA tournament for the last two years andretain a few key players from last year’s squad, not tomention a good crop of recruits.

“That’s the team to beat right now,” Henry added. After that, who’s to say?“Our conference is pretty balanced,” Henry said.
