Dear Members & Friends

Twenty-five years ago, dairywoman Ellen Straus and biologist Phyllis Faber sensed thatMarin County agriculture was in imminent danger of being lost to non-agricultural devel-opment, and they set out to do something to keep that from happening. They had a visionof protecting the land that has been a source of food and inspiration for thousands of years. The instrument they created to realize their vision was Marin Agricultural Land Trust.Today, 35,000 acres—almost one-third of Marin’s farm and ranch lands—are protected foragricultural use, permanently, by malt agricultural conservation easements.

Malt pioneered this type of preservation, which compensates farmers and ranchers forthe development value of their land, while permanently protecting the land for agricul-ture. Since 1980, our organization has served as a model for communities across the coun-

try concerned about the loss of their productive farmland.

On the home front, malt this year completed the acquisition ofconservation easements on three ranches—the Lanatti Dairy inChileno Valley, the James Grossi Ranch in the Stafford Lakewatershed west of Novato, and the landmark Moore Ranch inNicasio Valley. Information about each of these important prop-erties is provided later in this report.

The virtues of collaboration and partnerships are touted so fre-quently these days that these words risk becoming slogans with-out meaning. But malt’s success truly is the product of manypartnerships: with farming families committed to their land andthe future of their operations; with county government to main-tain strong land-use policies and zoning that value and protectagricultural land from speculative development; with publicagency funders who have provided almost half of the $10 millioncost of acquiring agricultural conservation easements over thepast five years; and with you, our members and individual sup-porters who, through your annual dues and contributions, sustainan organization capable of carrying out an ambitious and chal-lenging program. You also, through your extraordinary gifts, haveprovided more than $5 million towards the purchase of conserva-tion easements during that time period.

We are very proud to have permanently protected twelve properties totaling 6,745 acressince 1999. Right now we are working on seven projects that would preserve as much landin half the time. We project that malt will have an opportunity to preserve more than12,000 acres by 2010!

If she were alive, Ellen would have been urging us on (maybe she still is!). In the next 25years, with your help, we will try to complete her and Phyllis’ vision.

“We need to be talking aboutthe family farmers who live on

and care for small tracts of

land, out of the motivation that

long association and deep

knowledge can produce peo-

ple who know the difference

between duty and love. We

need to know what that kind

of spirit means for a person as

well as a place, and then we’ll

begin to understand the practi-

cal value of the family farm.”

Statement of Activity &Changes in Net Assets

July 1,2003—June 30, 2004

The Operating Fund provides the money to carry out malt’s day-to-day activities in con-servation easement acquisition, stewardship monitoring, and raising public awareness aboutthe importance of preserving Marin County’s productive farmlands. Most of the revenue forthe Operating Fund comes from membership dues and contributions.

The Ellen Straus Farmland Preservation Fund includes grants from foundations and publicagencies and contributions by individuals. These are used to purchase agricultural conservationeasements. Temporarily restricted funds have been designated by donors to be used for suchpurchases. When malt purchases a conservation easement, it also takes on a permanentresponsibility for seeing that the terms of the easement are carried out and that the agricul-tural and natural resource values of the land are protected. The Board-designated endowmentprovides an assured source of funding for that stewardship now and in the future.

Education & Outreach

Malt continually strives to broaden the community that understands the value of local agri-culture and is willing to support it. These community-building efforts help ensure that the agri-cultural lands that malt preserves today will sustain viable agricultural operations for genera-tions to come.

Malt’s Outreach Program creates awareness of our organization and of agriculture’s historic, economic, and environmental importance to the area. Public relations efforts have resulted inmalt’s easement and education programs being the subject of both regional and national mediaattention. These, in turn, have led to increased membership and greater support for our farm-land preservation efforts.

The hikes, tours, and events that are part of malt’s core Education Program bring visitors ontoMarin’s beautiful farmland and introduce them to the people who grow their food. The connec-tions made at the these events between farmers and the public and between the public and theland help form a strong sense of community that will be the foundation for a sustainable agri-cultural future for the area.

Malt also works in collaboration with the Marin Agriculture and Education Alliance to trainteachers about local agriculture and to coordinate farm field trips for Bay Area students. TheMarin Food Systems Project, another facet of this collaborative effort, builds communitybetween schools and local farms by supporting the use of locally grown and produced foods inMarin school cafeterias.

Volunteers are a vital part of our efforts. They are our ambassadors, not only as Hikes & Toursleaders and helpers at our many special activities, but also in their own communities. They gen-erously donate their time for our events, and some even create events of their own to introducemalt and local agriculture to their friends, business associates, and family members. Rancherswho host tours of their property give visitors a behind-the-scene look at family farms. Finally, many organizations, agencies, and individuals have helped us spread the word about the impor-tance of local agriculture. Our thanks to all of you. Agricultural land conservation is truly a com-munity effort.

Easement Acquisition & Stewardship

Marin County farmers and ranchers continue to express a high level of interest in malt’s ease-ment program, which provides willing landowners with a conservation alternative to the sale ordevelopment of their property. Malt purchased three agricultural conservation easements this fis-cal year, permanently protecting a total of 2,463 acres. To raise the significant funds needed to pur-chase these easements, malt leveraged private money raised from our members with public grantsfrom state and federal agencies.

Malt secured $1.75 million in state funding and used those dollars for two projects: In theStafford Lake watershed, we purchased an easement on the 870-acre Marindale Ranch, owned bythe James Grossi, Sr. family, with funds raised from the California Department of Conservation’sFarmland Conservancy Program (cfcp) and the State Coastal Conservancy, as well as from ourmembers. Malt’s easement on Nicasio Valley’s landmark 1007-acre Moore Ranch was also fund-ed in part by a cfcp grant. The remainder of the funds came from malt members and contributors. Our third easement is located on the 585-acre Lanatti Ranch in Chileno Valley, where a newgeneration has taken over operating the family’s dairy. The easement was purchased entirelywith funds from malt’s members and contributors. Even during difficult economic times, malthas always received overwhelming public approval for its programs. We now have several appli-cations pending for additional state grants for future projects, and we look forward to the con-tinuing support of public agencies and our members as we carry on our efforts to permanentlyprotect Marin County farmland for agricultural use.

Each conservation easement malt acquires brings with it a perpetual responsibility to safeguardthe agricultural, scenic, and open space values of the property. We share this responsibility withthose who own the land, and our relationships with them are the cornerstone of ourStewardship Program. Malt’s Stewardship Coordinator annually visits each ranch on which wehold a conservation easement to track the condition of protected values, to catch potentialproblems early, and to gain an understanding of the management challenges facing agriculturaloperators in West Marin. This knowledge helps us connect landowners with programs andresources that will enable them to meet those challenges.

Three years ago, malt initiated its Stewardship Assistance Program. We recognized that adapt-ing management systems to fit current standards of water quality may place an economic strainon some agricultural operations. Since then, malt has allocated a total of almost $80,000 tolandowners on eight different ranches to fence creeks and riparian areas, protect springs, andarrest erosion. These projects will help improve water resources and wildlife habitat and, inmost cases, expand management opportunities for agricultural operations, too.

Each of the easements purchased this year also incorporates creek conservation areas which provideadditional protections for waterways while increasing the value of the easement. Malt works withlandowners to develop a management plan for appropriate uses along creeks, so we can ensure thatactivities on the land will continue to foster clean water, stable soils, and dynamic plant and ani-mal communities while maintaining the productivity and health of Marin County farmlands.

Since its founding in 1980, malt’s success has been the result of inspiration from itsfounders and dedication on the part of those who have followed in their footsteps.Malt members provide the financial support that helps protect Marin’s agricultur-al heritage and preserve its spectacular landscapes. We gratefully acknowledge herethe Guardians, Stewards, Benefactors, Patrons, and Sponsor donors who have madecontributions in 2003-2004. We extend our appreciation to each of our many otherdonors at all levels whose names are too numerous to list. Our thanks go also to ourPartners for Preservation for remembering malt in their estate plans, and to thosewho give through the Earthshare workplace giving program.
