The Park University men’s soccer team, which posted a 14-8-1 record a year ago, takes a No. 5 national ranking in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 into the 2004 season. Head Coach Efrem Shimlis returns 10 players with starting experience from last season’s squad, which captured both the regular season and post-season MCAC championships and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA national tournament. Senior midfielder Enock Odede (Nairobi, Kenya) highlights the return-ing class after earning third-team All-American honors last season. Odede scored 14 goals and had 14 assists to lead the Pirates with 42 points. Sophomore forward Paul McLaughlin (Ballymoney, North Ireland) and senior defender Justin Boersma (Kelwna, British Columbia) also earned All-America honors in 2003, being named to the honorable mention squad. McLaughlin tied for the team lead in goals with 14, while Boersma started all 23 games as a defender. In goal, junior Ricardo Avalos (Chihuahua, Mexico) returns after post-ing 10 shutouts last season, along with a 1.00 goals against average and a .832 save percentage. Juniors Henok Belayneh (Forward, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) and Ross Stride (Forward, Glasgow, Scotland) are back after scoring 12 and 11 goals, respectively. Other returning starters include senior Chris Lisaka (Midfielder, Nairobi, Kenya), senior Mekete Gashaw (Midfielder, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia), junior Felix Makachia (Defender, Nairobi, Kenya) and sophomore David Waithaka (Midfielder, Nairobi, Kenya). Despite losing seven starters from the 2003 MCAC and NAIA Region IV championship team, the Park University women’s soc-cer team will look to carry over last season’s success into 2004. The Pirates’ top goal-scorer from a year ago, Julia Eshikumo, returns to lead a Park squad that finished the season 15-5-1 and advanced to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament. Eshikumo, a sophomore from Nairobi, Kenya, scored 26 goals and had eight assists en route to being named a first-team all-region selection. Junior Kesiann Francis (Chauganas, Trinidad) was a sec-ond-team All-MCAC pick in 2003, scoring three goals and notching eight assists in 20 starts as a midfielder. Defensively, sophomore Amber Pecheco (Kansas City, Mo.) is back after starting 20 games last season as a freshman. Junior Kate Johnson (Kansas City, Mo.) started six games as a midfielder in 2003, recording nine shots and one assist. Senior Haley Daniel (Indpendence, Mo.) will be a starting defender for the Pirates. In 2002, she started 22 games and scored three goals and recorded seven assists. Coming off a 14-21 record and a sixth-place finish in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference last season, the Park University women’s volleyball team returns an experienced group of six starters and nine let-terwinners in 2004. Leading the Pirates will be senior middle hitter Tenysha Brown, who earned first-team All-MCAC honors last season. Brown led the team in 2003 with 1.5 blocks per game, to go along with her 2.9 kills per game. The Kansas City, Mo., native hit at a .352 clip last season. Senior Sugglis Chinchilla returns at outside hitter after being named second-team All-MCAC a year ago. The Merida, Venezuela, native aver-aged a team-best 3.3 kills per game, as well as 2.6 digs and 0.6 blocks per game in 2003. Rounding out Park’s returning starters are senior outside hitter Jessica Sillman (Bernie, Mo.), senior setter Terra Van Duine (Blue Springs, Mo.), senior outside hitter Jilian Creighton (Lansing, Kan.) and senior defensive specialist Nicci Ward. Sillman led the team last season in digs (2.8 per game) and service aces (43), while Van Duine will make the transition this season from libero to setter. Other returning letterwinners include juniors Michelle Terry (Defensive Specialist, Independence, Mo.), Francesca Chavez (Defensive Specialist, Quemado, N.M.) and Meghaan Fountain (Middle Hitter, Gladstone, Mo.). Head Coach Peggy Tuter, who is entering her fifth season at Park (48-90 record), has been encouraged by a strong preseason by her Pirates. “The team has been working very hard to get ready for the season,” Tuter said. “Last year, we had trouble finishing matches, but this year our team will make sure that won’t be the case.”

Season Preview

Senior Terra Van Duine was an NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete in 2003. The Blue Springs, Mo., native averaged 2.7 digs per game last season.

Brian Renshaw-- Head Coach-- 12th Season

The Park University men’s and women’s cross country teams enter the 2004 seasons ready to reload. Gone are each team’s top runners from a year ago. Mabior Atem closed out an illustrious career in 2003 with his third All-America honor on the men’s side, while Crystal Bethel captured an individual conference cham-pionship for the women. Despite the losses, Head Coach Brian Renshaw has a group of talented athletes ready to lead the Pirates in 2004. Junior Keith Longuski (Ubly, Mich.) will pace the men’s squad after plac-ing second at the MCAC Championship and 10th at the NAIA Region IV meet in 2003, which qualified him for nationals. In addition, Renshaw expects solid performances from senior Roger White (Ft. Collins, Colo.) and freshmen Chris Allred (Hollister, Mo.) and Justin Moss (Festus, Mo.), who were all-state runners in Missouri last year as high school seniors. For the women, juniors Reagan Mackey (Nassau, Bahamas) and Amy Musil (Kansas City, Mo.) return after posting first-team all-conference fin-ishes last season, while sophomore Becky Tackett (Marshfield, Mo.) is back as a second-team all-conference honoree. According to Renshaw, newcomers Melinda Jansen (Branson, Mo.), Sara Pitia (Kansas City, Mo.) and Jill Prather (Kansas City, Mo.) are all expected to contribute as freshmen.

Season Preview

Sophomore Becky Tackett (Marshfield, Mo.) earned second-team All-MCAC honors in 2003.

-- Assistant Coach-- First Season Ron Pearl enters the first year of his second stint as an assistant coach with the track & field and cross country programs at Park University. Pearl previously served as an assistant at Park in the early 1980s.

A 1982 graduate of Park in economics and business administration, Pearl qualified for the 1980 indoor nationals semifinals in the 60-yard dash. In addition to his track & field career, he had a short playing career with the Ottawa Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. Pearl resides in Parkville, Mo., and works as a customer service agent for Continental Airlines.

Ron Pearl

Brian Renshaw enters his 12th season at the head coach of the cross country and track & field programs at Park.

In that time, Renshaw has sustained Park’s reputation as a perennial contender in running sports since the early 1980s. Under Renshaw,

Park’s teams have placed high in Missouri and across the NAIA Midwest Region and have regularly received top twenty national rankings from the NAIA. Along the way, the Pirates have broken more than 100 school records in Renshaw’s term as head coach. Before coaching at Park, Renshaw coached at Tarkio College where he also directed a winning program. In four years at Tarkio, Renshaw won four consecutive conference titles. Renshaw has coached more than 100 All-Americans. His peers have recognized him by voting him conference, district, or regional coach of the year 25 times. Renshaw is a graduate of Baker University and lives in Kansas City, Mo., with his wife Candi.

In accordance with the federal Right to Know Act, the following chart outlines the number of recipients of athletic grants in each program. The number of athletes is broken down by sex and race. The chart represents the number of students in each area; it does not reflect the dollar amounts of aid granted. Also, those receiving grants for more than one sport are only counted once.
