BIG 12 CONFERENCE SPORTSMANSHIP STATEMENT

The member institutions of the Big 12 Conference are committed to competitionin an arena where sportsmanship and the sense of fair play take center stage.Whether on the field, within the community or in the classroom, those whomake up the Big 12—its administrators, coaches, game officials, and student-athletes—support the highest ideals in sportsmanship.

At the heart of sportsmanship is the commitment of the institutions towardsrespect for the opposition and those officiating contests in the 21 sports sponsoredby the Big 12. It is with a sense of fair play that a true sporting demeanor in thespirit of intercollegiate competition can be created and maintained with a totalregard for the welfare of student-athletes, coaches, support personnel andspectators.

Sportsmanship on the field of play is governed by Conference rules and guidelines,as well as those established under the NCAA and amateur organizations. It is theresponsibility of game officials and administrators to see to strict adherence tothese guidelines. The behavior of spectators is managed by event personnel, whoare encouraged to deal with interference or abuse of appropriate sporting behaviorin the strictest of methods.

The Big 12 Conference and its member institutions appreciate the support of themajority of fans who wish to create an atmosphere of competition that allowsthe participants to showcase the game and their respective skills.

BIG 12 CONFERENCE 10TH ANNIVERSARY

The Big 12 will celebrate its 10th Anniversary of athletic competition during the2005-06 season. In an effort to recognize this significant milestone, the conferenceand its member schools will participate in numerous activities to commemoratethe special teams, student-athletes, moments and accomplishments of the past 10years.

• A 10th Anniversary logo (below) has been created and will be utilized by theconference and its member schools in promotional activities, on retailmerchandise, uniforms, playing fields and more.

• To celebrate the history of the Big 12, the league and its schools will selectspecial 10th anniversary teams for all sports. The volleyball 10th anniversaryteam will be released on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

• In certain sports, including volleyball, fans will be allowed to vote via theleague web site for players they feel should be honored on anniversary teamsas part of the 10th anniversary celebration.

• The Big 12 will work in conjunction with its member schools to stage specialevents and recognition during the first weekend of conference play in footballas well as men’s & women’s basketball, baseball and softball later in the season.

PLAYER OF THE WEEKStarting Aug. 29, a Big 12 Player of the Week will be selected each Mondaythrough Nov. 28. Players are nominated by the schools’ media relationscontacts and chosen by the conference championships staff. The Player ofthe Week will be released on Mondays by 3 p.m. CT.

WEEKLY RELEASEThe Big 12 communications staff will update a weekly release, includingresults Big 12 Player of the Week, and national polls each Monday during theseason. Complete league statistics will be updated via the conference web siteeach week after matches are completed.

POSTSEASON AWARDSThe Big 12 presents its all-conference awards at the end of the regular season.A Coach, Player, Newcomer, Freshman, Defensive Specialist, and Libero ofthe Year are named. Twelve individuals will receive All-Big 12 First Teamrecognition, while an additional six will be named Honorable Mention.Each Big 12 head coach votes on the squads and are not permitted to vote fortheir own players. The awards will be announced on Monday, Nov. 28.

Academic All-Big 12 teams are also chosen in volleyball and will be releasedon Tuesday, Nov. 15. Student-atheletes must post a grade point average of3.00 or better either cumulative or the previous two semesters and areregulars (i.e. letterwinners) on her respective team to earn the honor. First-team honorees are regulars who have at least a 3.20 GPA, while the remainingplayers are second team.

THE BIG 12 SHOWCASEThe Big 12 Showcase is a 30-minute promotion of the league with featureson student-athletes, coaches, teams and conference championships. Theshow is shot on location each week at a different Big 12 campus or conferencechampionship venue. For the 10th year, the show will be hosted by BillLand and produced by Keith Fletcher of FSN Southwest. Airing of theShowcase is syndicated throughout the Big 12 markets.

San Antonio has established a legacy for hosting NCAA Championships. In 1998, San Antonio hosted its first national eventin the Alamodome. Three Final Fours later, SALOC will team up to sponsor its first Division I Women’s VolleyballChampionship.
