2006 Colby-Sawyer Volleyball Season Preview

After a successful 2005 campaign ended in the Colby-Sawyer Charger volley-

ball team winning their third conference championship and advancing to the second round of the NCAA DIII Tournament, the new-look Chargers are ready to keep the winning tradition alive.

Last year’s senior-laden squad re-wrote the record books at Colby-Sawyer on their way to earning eight Commonwealth Coast Conference honors including CCC Player of the Year (Jessica Niebuhr), CCC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year (Kathy Cou-ture), and CCC Coach of the Year (Chad Braegelmann).

This season a Chargers team with only one returning starter, Jessica Niebuhr, looks to reload and make yet another run for their eleventh straight CCC championship ap-pearance.

“I am extremely excited for the season to start this fall,” said sixth-year head coach Chad Braegelmann. “We have a lot of

young talent and athleticism on this team that has not had much of a chance to showcase itself because of the gifted senior class we had last year.”

A lineup of three seniors looks to provide leadership for a young squad. Jessica Niebuhr (Manitou Springs, Colo.), Suzie Kaegi

(Sunapee, N.H.) and Hilary Ballentine (Alton, N.H.) look to make an impact for the Chargers.

“Jess has done a phenomenal job running the team as our setter,” said Braegelmann. “We may try and use her in differ-ent roles this year, taking some of the pressure off our other players. She is going to be our emotional leader on the court.

“Suzie got a lot of playing time last year. She will be battling for time on the outside. Hilary had a year off and coming back will give us depth on the right side. She will be in the mix for some major playing time as well.”

With no juniors on the roster, the Chargers look to the young talent for help. Four sophomores and eight freshmen will con-tribute heavily to the success of this year’s team.

“The majority of our team is made up of underclassmen,” Braegelmann said. “That means they are going to be seeing lots of court time and contributing to our suc-cess.”

Sophomores Taylor Forsberg (Moult-onborough, N.H.), Melissa Estabrook (Newton, Mass.), Jackie Burnett (Ports-mouth, N.H.) and Kristen Romanko (Mansfield, Mass.) bring talent to this young squad and will get a chance to dis-

play their skills.

“Taylor looks to see a lot of time on the outside for us,” said Braegelmann. “She jumps like crazy and has a great knack for the game. She does a nice job for us

defensively.

“Melissa had a phenomenal year for us last year in limited playing time. She led the team in hitting percentage. She is a strong athlete who can hit the ball and does a great job at blocking. She is a powerful force at the net.

“Jackie has a good chance to move into our libero posi-tion this season. She has great ball control and a tremendous knack for the game. She has a great serve and lateral quickness. I believe she will be very steady for us in the back row.

“Kristen is another tower for us in the middle. She won the team’s most im-proved player award last year. She has done a great job offensively and will con-tinue to make progress. She works hard and is a quick learner. Both Kristen and Melissa had great spring seasons for us in the middle.” A group of eight talented freshmen also join the ranks of Colby-Sawyer volley-ball this season, looking to provide depth for a team that graduated six starters. Genny Moore (Centerville, Mass.), Megan White (Monroe, Conn.), Mon-tana Molyneux (Caledon, Ontario), Kim Shannon (Wallingford, Conn.) and

Mickey Lapan (Medway, Mass.) will look to provide help in the front row for the Chargers.

Braegelmann will also be counting on three other freshmen, Shelagh Costello (Can-ton, Mass.), Devin Zylak (Dunbarton, N.H.), and Amanda Jones (Canton, Mass.), to contribute.

“These freshmen will be an important part of our success,” said Braegelmann. “These kids have the skills to take over for the talented athletes we graduated.

“Genny never lost a high school match, Megan’s club team won the New England Championship for junior Olympics and Montana comes from a family full of vol-leyball players.

“Kimberly will provide depth in the middle for us, while Mickey gives us another op-tion at opposite. Shelagh will see time as a defensive specialist/libero for us and Amanda will be another option for us on the outside. Devin will probably do some setting for us and help us out in the back row.”

Colby-Sawyer Volleyball Coaching Staff

Under the direc-tion of sixth-year

head coach Chad Braegelmann, the Col-by-Sawyer women’s volleyball team has grown into one of the premier programs in New England.

Last season, the Chargers reached their tenth consecutive Commonwealth Coast

Conference champion-ship match and won the team’s second CCC

championship under Braegelmann. Last year’s team also advanced to the second round in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

For his efforts, Braegelmann was selected by his peers as the CCC Coach of the Year, his second award in the past three seasons.

Colby-Sawyer’s program also made history in 2004 under Braegelmann, earning a bid in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III New Eng-land Tournament for the first time.

Under his direction, the Chargers have posted a 107-58 mark, including a 39-5 record in Common-wealth Coast Conference. Last season, Braegelmann also reached the 100 win mark, when the Chargers defeated the University of New England on Oct. 26, 2005.

Braegelmann serves on the NCAA Division III New England Regional poll, the NEWVA Division III Poll and is the Commonwealth Coast Conference liaison to the AVCA Division III Head Coaches Committee.

Braegelmann, who also serves as the Club Sports co-ordinator at Colby-Sawyer, spent a year at Northern State University, serving as a graduate assistant coach during the 2000-01 school year. At Northern State, he earned a master’s degree in education with an emphasis on health, physical education and coaching.

Prior to Northern State, he spent two years as an assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach at his alma mater, the University of Minnesota-Morris. He earned bachelor’s degrees in management and sports management while also minoring in economics.

Chad and his wife Natalie live in South Sutton with their two sons, Tyler (3) and Riley (1).

Assistant Coach Kristin Anderson7th Season

Kristin is heading into her eleventh season as a Charger. After a stellar four year career as a player, including leading a team to a 30-6 record and the program’s inaugural CCC Championship, Kristin has helped out the past six years as an assistant coach and is returning for her seventh. Kristin will help with game stats and recruiting.

Assistant Coach Amy Tarte 1st Season

Amy Tarte is also a Charger volleyball alum. Tarte, a 2006 grad, had a phenomenal playing career, rewriting the defensive record book and was a two-time all-conference performer as well as the CCC Libero of the Year in 2004. Tarte brings a wealth of knowledge to the Charger staff and will help out with individual and team defense as well as orchestrate the Chargers’ serve receive.
