WWe are officially half-way through the year, time certainly flies. It is so nice

to see all the activities in full swing. Thepool area is full daily and the fitnessfacility is busy and appreciated by all whouse it.

We are pleased to announce that Mr.Brendon McReady, the Outdoor PoolManager, has accepted the full timeposition of Fitness Center Pool Manager.Brendon is a very familiar face to many; avery easy going chap who enjoys Kenwoodand his work, so please welcome himaboard when you see him around the club.

I mentioned in my last article theimportance of making reservations. We hadto turn many away for our Memorial DayCarnival. It is very difficult toaccommodate one hundred plus people whodecide on the day of the event that theywant to come. So please, for all events, make reservations well in advance so thatyou are not disappointed. We had awonderful turn out for Memorial Day. Theweather was great and a good time was hadby all.

Have a great summer!See you around the [email protected]

KGA

By Bob Ott

TT he KGA’s Member Guest Tournament was held on May 20 with a field of 82 players.

Vince Desiderio did an spectacular job ofmaking the arrangements for this event, andthe weather was great. The member/guestteams were divided into eleven flights, eachnamed for a classic golf course. The way ofplay was best ball for three nine-holematches, with one point awarded for eachhole won, 1/2 point awarded for each holehalved, and an extra point awarded for eachmatch won. The winning teams were asfollows:

Merion FlightG.P. Penati and Ron Rhodes

Oakmont FlightJohn Nunez and Tad Shields

Inverness FlightTom Burdeshaw and David Hull

Newport Golf Club FlightDick Crone and Jim Wilcox

The Country Club FlightDavid Levine and Jay Taylor

Oak Hill FlightChris Huebner and Steve Edwards

Pebble Beach FlightPaul Mogin and Lon Musselwhite

Congressional FlightJonathan Moore and Aaron Thomas

Baltusrol FlightJeff Werthan and Rick Graf

Pinehurst No. 2 FlightBob Jenets and Mel Hardy, Jr.

Winged Foot FlightGene Johnson and Eric Core

The overall winners, based on thehighest team score, were Tom Burdeshawand David Hull. Most of the raffle prizeswere won by Vince Desiderio.

Kenwood’s B-Team’s season got offto a strong start under Captain BernieNunez. In its first match against Argyle onMay 13, the team was dominant, winning12 1/2 to 5 1/2. Contributing to the pointtotal were the home teams of Steve Smithand John Phillips (2 points), BernieNunez and Chuck Larson (2 1/2 points)and Jim Guidera and John Joncas (2points). Contributing from the away teamswere John Nunez and Scott Mortimer (3points) and Dave Markey and Nick Park (3points). After due consultation with theteam captain, we have decided not to reportthe names of the team members who didnot score any points (i.e., were “skunked”).

The B-Team continued its winningways on June 13 with a solid victory over atenacious Bretton Woods team, by a scoreof 13 1/2 to 4 1/2. Our team won five out ofsix matches overall with all three awaymatches in the win column. Contributing tothe point total were the home teams ofChris Huebner and Bob Cullen (3 points)and John Nunez and John Phillips (3points). The away teams were Steve Smithand Nick Park (2 points), Dave Markey andBill Maher (3 points) and Bill Todd andChuck Larson (2 1/2 points). Thecomposition of the last team--the one thatwas skunked--led to an interestingphilosophical debate. Should thenondisclosure policy apply in a case wherethe identity of one of the losing members(such as the team captain) was obvious bythe omission of his name from the list ofwinners? To obtain guidance on this topic, Iconsulted with the KGA President, theKGC Competition Chair and numerousfriends of the team captain. We ultimatelydecided that the rule about not disclosingthe losing team members should apply evenin this situation.

The KGA has two tournaments in July. The first is the Club Championship, which

will be held on Friday-Sunday, July 14-16.As in past years, players will be flightedbased on their handicaps, except for theChampionship Flight, where members mustqualify. The Championship Flight will beplayed at scratch and the other flights willbe played on a net basis. There will be 18-hole matches on Friday afternoon, startingwith a 1 pm shotgun. All players willcontinue into a second 18-hole match onSaturday, the Friday winners continuing intheir flight round and the Friday loserscontinuing in a consolation round for eachflight. The finals for each flight andconsolation will be held on Sunday, withthe players in the Championship Finalplaying 36 holes. The Championship Finalis always an exciting event, and I encourageyou to walk the course and watch thecompetition.

Later in the month, on Thursday, July20, the KGA will hold its WeekdayAfternoon Member/Member/Member/Guest Tournament. Players can sign up asmember/member teams or member/guestteams. Members can bring up to threeguests and participate with each guest as aseparate team. Scoring will be the betterball of the two team members with awardsfor low gross and low net. This is a greatopportunity to pay back multiple guests inone outing at a price--$40 per guest--that isabout half of the regular guest fee atKenwood. Refreshments will follow theevent. ★

DD espite a Thursday morning with somewhat nasty weather conditions, a group

of hardy and intrepid Niners made theirway around the back nine for the annualThree Way competition on May 11th. Infirst place was the team of Barb Nevins,Madeleine Schaller and Pam Wincup. And Iknow you’ll recognize those names fromtheir numerous appearances in this columnas “big money winners”! And, once again, there was money enough for possibly asmall appetizer in the grill! But the Ninersspirit is about the play, not the pay!

NINERS

The event on the 18th was our “ Beatthe Pro” and the Pro to beat this years wasSteve Papanek. While 21 players gave it theirbest, only four managed to beat Steve’s scoreof 37, played earlier that day. Our Pro-levelwinners were Emily Collins, Alice Dewys,Susan Pearce and Sue Tolchin. I do believethat Ms. Emily is among the winners justabout every time she plays! And the otherladies are no strangers to top performanceseither!

The Azalea Bowl is underway withseveral first rounds having been played atpress time. More details to come in the nextedition. And the weather forecast for thisThursday is looking might fine so it will beanother great day to ...............

WHAT’S THE RACKET?(continued from page 10)

Ask the ProWe invite you to send questions about

tennis rules or techniques. You can dropthem off at the front desk in the TennisCommittee box, or e-mail [email protected].

In a doubles match yesterday, thereceivers kept stopping the serve by sayingthey weren’t ready. Does the server have towait for everyone to be ready to receive?

The server must wait for the receiver tobe ready to serve the ball. But, the receivermust play to the reasonable pace of theserver. According to the rule, the server mustserve the first serve within 20 seconds of theend of the last point, and serve the secondimmediately.

Can the server hit the serve just as thereceiver looks up after getting in readyposition?

No, the receiver must have a second ortwo to make eye contact with the serverbefore the server may serve.

An overhead bounced on the other sideof the court and hit my opponent, sending itback over the net. Does this count as a goodshot for the opponent since it did not hit theracket?

According to Rule 24, the point is lostif the ball in play touches the player oranything the player is wearing or carrying, except the racket. In other words, the playerwho hit the overhead won the point.

From the Tennis CommitteeIf you have an idea for a tennis event or

would like to volunteer, please know that wewelcome your effort! Don’t hesitate tocontact Richard Humbert, Christine Bragale,Heather Walsh or Cecil Hornbaker with anyquestions or comments.

We look forward to seeing you at DavisCup and the Women’s Member Guest. Untilthen, we leave you with a Tennis Thoughtfrom Bill Cosby: “The serve was inventedso that the net could play.”

HH aving recently seen a Ferris wheel at a local carnival I began to wonder how the

structure came about. The Ferris wheelsthat we ride on at our amusement parks orcountry fairs are about 50 feet high andhave 12 to 16 two-passenger seats. Not sowith the first Ferris wheel.

The design that gave these popularamusement park attractions their name wasan unbelievable engineering feat, createdespecially for the 1893 World’s ColumbianExposition in Chicago. The organizers ofthe Chicago Exposition were so impressedwith the new 984-foot-high Eiffel Tower atthe Paris Exposition of 1898 that theychallenged the American civil engineers tocome up with a structure that would be asunique and daring as the creation ofAlexandre Eiffel, and, of course, somethingthat would cause attention and bring peopleby droves to Chicago.

George Washington Gale Ferris, ayoung Pittsburgh bridge builder, welcomedthe challenge and presented a design for agigantic revolving wheel with passengercars. He wanted a wheel that was 250 feetin diameter holding 36 wooden passengercars, each carrying 60 people. At fullcapacity the structure would carry 2,160people.

People laughed at the plan, but Ferriswas persistent even thought the country was

in a depression. Some how he managed toraise enough money to finance the FerrisWheel Company. However, constructioncould begin only four months before theopening of the exposition when the contractwas finally signed. Since the Ferris’company could not handle a project of thismagnitude in the time available, they had touse a number of companies to get the jobdone on time. On June 9, 1892, the wheelwas ready to make its initial test runwithout cars. Everyone held their breath asthe gigantic structure began to movewithout any difficulties. After 36 woodencars were added the wheel was ready tocarry passengers. Fair-goers flocked to thewheel which was the talk of Chicago. Whenthe exposition closed, one and a halfmillion customers had ridden on the mostthrilling amusement park ride in history. The wheel was supported by two 140 footsteel towers; its 45 foot axle was the largestsingle piece of forged steel at the time inthe world. The wheel itself had a diameterof 250 feet, a circumference of 825 feet, and the maximum height was 264 feet. Itwas powered by two 1000 horsepowerreversible engines. The Ferris wheelgrossed $726,805.50 during its short timein operation, at 50 cents per ride.

The success and popularity of theFerris wheel was short lived. Due to thehigh transportation and re-erection coststhe profit realized was small. After thewheel was moved to St Louis for the

Louisiana Purchase Exposition, the wheelwas left unused to become an eyesore. InMay of 1906 the wheel was sold to awrecking company and dismantled with200 pounds of dynamite!

However, the end of the original Ferriswheel was not the end of the “World’sGreatest Ride.” Engineers all over theworld were trying to duplicate and improveon the original concept. In 1906 anAmerican, W.E. Sullivan, a Chicago bridgebuilder, came up with a smaller portablewheel modeled after the original Ferriswheel. He founded the Big Eli BridgeCompany, which manufactures most of theFerris wheels operating today. ★
