And

Services

Education Department

The Urban League’s education department motivates the intel-

lectual and imaginative capacity of each child in a safe and

nurturing environment. As a Supplemental Educational Ser-

vices provider designated by the federal No Child Left Behind

program, ULMS provides high-quality, research-based tutor-

ing and other supplemental academic enrichment services for

K-12th grade youth.

Children’s University and Children’s Summer University pro-

grams provide positive environments for youth to work with

certified instructors, tutors and experience the arts and hu-

manities firsthand. The summer program provides a unique

integrated experience comprised of core academic studies, cul-

tural studies, fine arts and literature, unique civic activities,

junior internships, and much more.

Area youth can prepare for their post-high school careers by

participating in ULMS programs for teenagers. Project

M.I.S.T.E.R. is a school-based life skills, mentoring, and inter-

vention program. Youth Congress is a creative and dynamic

youth empowerment program in which youth work on emer-

gent issues of particular relevance to citizens in their respec-

tive communities.

Housing

The Urban League Housing Department’s overarching goal is

to help renters with low-to-moderate income become home-

owners. We also help people who seek affordable rentals, and

are have trouble managing their mortgage payments when fi-

nancial hardships strike.

ULMS Housing Department services include:

Ready-to-Rent workshops for homeless or transitional hous-

ing clients

Individual development accounts for low-income clients

Financial literacy workshops

First-time homebuyer seminars and assistance

Landlord/tenant law counseling and advocacy

Mortgage default and reverse mortgage counseling

Continuing education courses for real estate agents

In addition to its work to support home ownership, ULMS

partners with Central House to provide transitional housing

through a special project at Harder House. Harder House is a

group home for homeless young adults between the ages of 19

-25 who need a place to live while they are gaining stability

and self-sufficiency.

Employment

The League’s employment department provides employment

services to employers and job seekers through a one-stop

service delivery system. ULMS forges new alliances with

partner corporations through the Corporate Partnership

Initiative. Area corporations attend employment orientation

workshops to meet clients, discuss job openings, and often to

set up job interviews. Our job resource center assists job

seekers through on-line job skills training, job counseling and

case management, access to job listings from the ULMS job

bank, resume and cover letter development, career exploration

assistance, job readiness workshops, and interview techniques

workshops.

ULMS helps young adults gain important job skills through its

Youth Employment Program. Building upon individual,

family, and community strengths, these individualized

programs are designed to engage youth by enhancing their

opportunities, ultimately supporting their growth into capable,

responsible, and caring citizens.

Contractor Development and Competitiveness Center

The ULMS Contractor Development and Competitiveness

Center (CDCC) empowers small and historically underutilized

contractors in becoming more competitive by developing or

improving their business operations skills and by providing

access to contracts with private and public owners, developers,

and prime contractors.

The ULMS/CDCC Technology & Plan Center is equipped

with plans and specifications, plotter, copier, fax, and

computers with internet access. Small business owners, agency

partners, and leaders of construction firms are brought together

through Builders Empowerment and Strategy Teams

(B.E.S.T.), a monthly contractor meeting to exchange

practical, real-world business knowledge and strategies.

Individual Development Plans help contractors identify their

needs for computing & communications, operations,

accounting, finance, marketing, research & development, and

corporate structure.
