From the President/Richard J. Levine 50 Years and Counting As those of you who follow the fortunes of the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund are aware, the Fund is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Fifty years ago, in another time of uncertainty for the newspaper industry, Bernard “Barney” Kilgore, the legendary architect of the modern Wall Street Journal, and a handful of senior colleagues launched a bold effort to encourage the nation’s best and brightest students to consider careers in journalism.

Today, as the newspaper industry faces perhaps the gravest fi nancial challenge in its history from the Internet and other communications technologies, I am pleased to be able report that the Fund continues to accomplish this important mission. The Fund’s board of directors approved almost $532,000 in grants and operating expenses for the 2008 programs for high school and college students, a 5.5% increase from last year. Still, the past year, like the one before, was diffi cult, forcing the Fund’s small dedicated staff to produce innovative solutions to problems that surfaced almost daily.

Most of those problems stemmed from the ongoing cost-cutting in many of the nation’s newsrooms in response to declining advertising and circulation revenue. That directly affected the Fund’s fl agship program – the paid, professional summer internships for college students and recent graduates. Some newspapers that had participated year after year trimmed the number of interns they took or bowed out entirely. Fortunately, however, new participants were recruited, often from the ranks of smaller dailies that have been the traditional training ground for journalists. As a result, we were able to award 103 editing and reporting internships for the summer of 2008, only one fewer than for 2007.

Equally encouraging were the quantity and quality of applicant pool. While some veteran journalists may be fatigued and depressed by the constant belt-tightening, large numbers of talented and ambitious young people aspire to be reporters and editors, which bodes well for the news business and a democratic society that depends on professional journalists to deliver an unbiased stream of vital news and analysis.

One lesson learned in recent years is that the Fund’s programs must embrace the new technologies, equipping tomorrow’s journalists with not only basic reporting and editing skills but also the online tools and techniques required in the digital age.

The Newspaper Fund was further strengthened by the addition to the board of two talented journalists -- Cathy Panagoulias, assistant managing editor of The Wall Street Journal, and Neal Lipschutz, managing editor of Dow Jones Newswires – and the upgrade of its Web site. Going forward, we anticipate benefi ting signifi cantly from the global strength and experience of News Corp., which acquired Dow Jones late last year.

From the Executive Director/Richard S. Holden A Valued Internship Program Returns

After a fi ve-year hiatus, the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund restarted its online internship program, at Western Kentucky University’s School of Journalism and Broadcasting under the direction of Dr. Pam Johnson.

Ten students were selected to participate in the intensive one-week training program. Judging from their comments and those of their supervisors, it was an overwhelming success.

Here’s what some of the students and their supervisors had to say.

Chris Rapking, a student at Ohio University, interned at the Tennessean in Nashville. He called the WKU training program “specifi c and effi cient as possible. …I loved the multimedia production skills that were taught hands-on; they were valuable and have been a wonderful addition to my portfolio.” The folks at the Tennessean were impressed. Chris was hired full time when his internship concluded.

Marie Yoko Thibault, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, spent her summer at Yahoo! Finance. Her supervisor commented that Marie was a “creative, independent thinker. A pleasure to have a problem solver who doesn’t need much hand-holding. Armed with a goal/destination, Marie will fi nd her own effective way to achieve it.”

Nate Birt, a student at the University of Missouri, shared the “Intern of the Year” award at the Detroit Free Press (along with another Newspaper Fund intern) for his online work. The director of new media at the Free Press said, “When anyone, as an intern, can step in and help fi ll the void created when other editors—editors with many, many more years more experience—are removed to work on other things, that says a lot about that intern’s ability. …Frankly, he performed. He got things done. He exceeded expectations.”

Of course, these plaudits are not limited to our online program. Nearly every supervisor report we received—from news editors to sports editors to business editors—was positive, a tribute to the college professors who select the students every December and train them every spring.

The online program wouldn’t have been possible without a generous contribution from Yahoo! News and its then director, Neil Budde, one of some 6,000 Newspaper Fund alumni who have come through our college programs since 1960. As I’ve often said, the Newspaper Fund is known by the alumni we keep. All of us thank Neil and Yahoo! News for their support.

Another measure of the program’s success is that, for 2008, the number of interns will be increasing 50 percent, and we’ll have two training sessions at Western Kentucky rather than one.

Thanks also go out to Morris Communications Corp. for providing eight positions at its newspapers for our editing interns. We hope to increase our ties to newspaper publishing companies, particularly those

heavily focused on community journalism.

A salute also goes out to Jim McGonnell, who was selected as our 2007 National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year.

Jim, who advises the Blue & Gold newspaper and the 2AToday television program at Findlay (Ohio) High School, joined 14 other Newspaper Fund teachers of the year last November in Philadelphia for the annual fall convention of the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association.

In his address to the teachers and advisers, he spoke for all of them when he said, “I am not poor. The thousands of kids I have come in contact with and friendships made, I would never fi nd in any other occupation.”

Congratulations, Jim. And, as always, thanks to all the news organizations and individuals who have played such an important role in our fi rst 49 years. We look forward to our 50th and many more.

College Programs Yahoo! News Revives Online Internship ProgramThe Newspaper Fund has wanted to bring back the online editing internship program since it was discontinued in 2003. It’s a new day and newspapers are again turning to digital media.

A multi-year grant from Yahoo! News, made it possible to open a training program at Western Kentucky University directed by Dr. Pamela Johnson with principal instruction from Ezra Palmer of Yahoo! News. Neil Budde, Fund alumnus, was instrumental in bringing the program new life.

Reinstating the online program boosted the number of Newspaper Fund internship residency sites to nine. The mainstays

continued to be newspaper editing with 76 interns at seven training sites, a sport copy editing program for eight interns and a business reporting program for nine interns.

The online interns were hired by 10 media organizations. Mark Simpson created DJNF Guinea Pigs on a social networking site that soon had loads of photographs, work samples and job information for the participants to devour and share.

2007 Ed Trayes Scholar Each year, Dr. Ed Trayes selects an intern to receive a $1,000 scholarship and the distinction of being named the Ed Trayes Scholar. The 2007 winner, the fourth of 10, is Gregory Schrier. Dr. Trayes said, “Greg Schreier

is well on his way to becoming a fi ne editor. Already he has demonstrated a high level of editing skill and expertise as well as a passion for journalism at its best. I have no doubt that Greg will make a signifi cant impact on how journalism is practiced wherever he works. . .and beyond.”

High School Programs Summer Journalism Workshops Embrace MultimediaRose Richard and Tsitsi Wakhisi didn’t have experience with media convergence but when offered sizable grants they placed their summer journalism workshops on wholly new platforms.

Mrs. Richard, associate dean at Marquette University’s College of Communication, accepted a $40,000 grant from the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation to run a multimedia program she called “Backpack Journalism.” Professor Wakhisi of the University of Miami received support from James Ansin of WSVN-Channel 7 and philanthropist Peace Sullivan. Both workshops, among 26 the Newspaper Fund co-sponsored in 2007, expanded from two weeks to three and added personnel with technical expertise. Each workshopper used an iMac laptop, Treo Smartphone, iPod with digital recording adaptor, memory card, video camera and digital camera to carry in a cushiony backpack.

Urban Voice looked at life in Milwaukee from school violence, to urban development to ethnic and cultural diversity. Blogs, digital video stories, opinion pieces, straight narratives and podcasts populate the site. Students took turns posing for signature portraits with electronic devices of their choice.

Mrs. Richard did away with the workshop paper and probably won’t have one again, she said.

Ms. Wakhisi’s students published a workshop paper in addition to the online projects and created a newscast. She chose the theme “Under the Gun: Teens and Violence in South Florida” for the paper and used “Got Shot?” on the Web. Both show the barrel of a gun.

National High School Journalism Teacher of the YearBrings a 30-Year Legacy of Service to the Title

Jim McGonnell has served scholastic journalism organizations in Ohio for more than 27 years. He’s taught for 31 years and has set a goal to teach for 35 years. When asked how many of his students had become professional journalists he couldn’t answer readily. How many had become journalism teachers? Astonishingly-- a dozen.

The 2007 national High School Journalism Teacher of the Year made his colleagues laugh and cry a little in his acceptance speech at the Philadelphia convention of the Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association.

Excerpts from his talk capture the essence of why he teaches.

As I sat there considering my future, I came up with 5 reasons to continue teaching and advising and why high school journalism programs, newspapers, broadcasts, and now video yearbooks aremy life.

Here are my top fi ve reasons to stay.

Number 5Money - It would be a huge loss of income if I retired at 30 years instead of 35. Teacher retirement in Ohio at 35 years is a good thing. I have a daughter in college and a freshman in high school, who is in my journalism program and could often be heard chanting in her bedroom, “four more years, four more years and she was not taking about George Bush.”

She just wants to go on the trips, I am not that naive. Plus my wife said if she had to keep going, so did I. Being a principal she makes more money than I do.

Number 4Fun - I am still having fun and I like the fast pace of today’s youth. Why would I want to give up the late night sessions, or as we affectionately call it “Hell Week”, where we fi nish fi nal layouts and put the paper to bed.

Breathtaking moments of standing on the rim of the Grand Canyon at sunrise, touring the Washington, D.C., monuments at night, or having a once in a lifetime dinner atop the World Trade Center at dusk were just a few awesome memories I’ve had as a high school journalism teacher.

Number 3I still love my job…… a lot.Okay some days the paper work, red tape, administrators, parents, fellow teachers and even some students make it not so fun. But I love my kids and how each month through the drama of high school, they turn into these workalcoholic and responsible journalists that publish a decent paper every month, and in turn make a difference at Findlay High School.

the same. With that being said, journalism teachers need to keep up with change. Our curriculum must provide the skills and principles so our students are well aware of what is happening “now” with both media and technology.

Whatever the medium - print, radio, television, or Internet - if news organizations are to be trusted they must prove themselves scrupulous in their insistence upon accuracy and their dedication to fairness.

Student journalists must be taught how to balance their rights with responsibility. Readers trust them to be honest, fair and accurate, especially with controversial school issues. They truly may be the only voice students in our schools have left. Our student body wants our student journalists to ruffl e some feathers, fi ght for their rights and fi nd out the truth, even if our administrators don’t like that. But with that goes responsibility, to look at both sides, weigh the issues, then write responsibly what they have found, and not just be faultfi nding whiners.

Number 2All of you. I would miss friends and colleagues. Ones that continue to make a huge difference in my life. Ones that everyday when I walk into my classroom, you’re with me, not physically of course, but I carry the knowledge of what you have taught me over the years. You make a difference everyday in my classroom.

Does that make sense to you? Because everyday when I walk into my room, with me comes John Bowen, Jack Kennedy, Homer Hall, Dick Johns, Terry Nelson, Kathy Craghead, Renee Burke, and so many more.

Number 1I still make a difference.

English Novelist Charles Kingsley once said. “Never, if possible, lie down at night without being able to say: I have made one human being, at least, a little wiser, a little happier, or a little better this day.”

Our publication offi ces, studios and newsrooms are safe havens for kids who may not feel the love at home or in the hallways, who get dragged down by the high pressure testing our state legislators have turned our schools into.

All states have standardized tests; some can stop our students from walking at graduation and receiving their diplomas. We reward kids for a sameness or oneness in thought. We want everyone to bubble in the right answer, so our schools receive good ratings. But my goal goes beyond good ratings. We all encourage our students’ individualism; we want to nurture good responsible journalists.

We are creating many of our country’s future leaders; ones that can problem solve, multitask, communicate, and think critically. Ones that will make their own difference in peoples’ lives time and time again.

Publications and CommunicationsRedesigned Web Site The Newspaper Fund spent the better part of 2007 planning, meeting and working with colleagues at Dow Jones to build a better Web site. The fi nished product scheduled for release in 2008 is live at https://www.newspaperfund.org. Higher functionality including data exchange and electronic internship applications and grant proposals, online job posting were among elements of the build. The new journalism school search feature is an especially important enhancement.

Rickelle Borowy, a Pennsylvania State University senior, returned in summer 2007 as an intern to focus on details of the site’s look and feel guided by Vicki Cash of the IT department.

We expect increased use by intern applicants, media professionals and grant seekers.

Compact Adviser Update

Adviser Update, the Fund’s quarterly newspaper for more than 5,000 high school teachers and media professionals, converted from a tabloid to a compact in 2007. Dow Jones colleagues John Stevens in Orlando helped us and Gary Goyden in South Brunswick led the team. Design consultant Dave Rowe re-confi gured the publication’s special features for the smaller pallette.

Additional copies were distributed at the spring and fall conferences of the National Scholastic Press Association/Journalism Education Association and at the spring convention of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in New York City. The spring issue is the largest at 36 pages featuring a pullout for the directory for Summer Adviser and Student Journalism Workshops.

The number of sponsoring organizations has continued to grow from the ranks of scholastic press groups, universities and state press associations. Their support enables us to distribute the paper free to our readers.

Journalism Career Guides

The Journalist’s Road to Success, the Fund’s career guide, and its Spanish language counterpart, La Ruta Al Exito del Periodista, continue to be in demand and offered free for single copy requests.

About Fund ProgramsThe Newspaper Fund accepts proposals for two program strands designed to fulfi ll our mission of encouraging students to pursue careers in journalism: College Internship Residencies and High School Journalism Workshops. Guidelines for these programs are available on our Web site, https://www.newspaperfund.org, in the Forms section.

Our grant applications can be obtained online. Further, proposals for College Internship Residencies and High School Journalism Workshops may only be submitted online. Additionally, the Fund will review unsolicited proposals that directly relate to the foundation’s mission. The Basic Grant Application Form for an unsolicited proposal is a Microsoft word document which can be saved on and completed on a computer desktop. It must be submitted by mail. It requires a narrative description of the program or project, a description of the organization, an itemized expense and income budget, resumes of personnel, proof of 501 (c)(3) status and other relevant materials.

Ineligible ProjectsThe Fund does not award grants to publish commercial newspapers or underwrite dinners, luncheons, receptions or other special events. Grants are made only to non-profi t, federally tax-exempt organizations. Individuals are not eligible to apply for DJNF funding.

Proposal DeadlinesProposals must be submitted no later than October 1. Decisions are announced after the annual meeting of the Board of Directors in November.

Directors of previously funded DJNF programs must complete the required fi nal reports before submitting new proposals. They must log on as a Returning DJNF User to submit these reports.
