MarcuS Kerry BarnettRev. Marcus Kerry Barnett, 68, of McAlester died Dec. 13, 2006.Marcus Kerry was born Aug. 13, 1938, in Chambers, Okla., to M.K. and Minnie C.

Grubbs Barnett. He married Beverly Elaine Ingram on April 20, 1956. He served in the U.S. Army 1957-1964. He worked 15 years as a journeyman lineman

for El Paso Electric Co. He graduated from New Mexico State University and Perkins School of Theology.

Rev. Barnett was ordained as an elder in 1985.He retired in 2001 after 30 years as a United Methodist pastor. In Oklahoma Conference,

he served Atoka, Wewoka-First, Cromwell, Sallisaw, Piedmont, and Poteau. He also served churches in New Mexico Conference.

He coached little league teams and was active in civic clubs. He was a Mason, serving in every appointive and elected office.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Pamela J. Bolt of Virginia; two sons, Rev. Mark S. Barnett of Midwest City and Marcus Kerry Barnett Jr. of McAlester; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Service was Dec. 16 at Chaney’s Memorial Chapel in McAlester. Burial was at Chambers Cemetery. Arrangements were by Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home.

leSter lee BottoMSRev. Lester Lee Bottoms, 81, of Wagoner died Feb. 3, 2007.Lester was born Oct. 4, 1925, in Holdenville, Okla., to Grover Cleveland and Addie

Belle Tucker Bottoms. He married Verna Lou McCluskey on Dec. 25, 1948, in Seminole.He was a World War II veteran, serving submarine duty in the U.S. Navy. He worked

in the oil fields before being called into ministry. He graduated from Perkins School of Theology. He was ordained as a deacon in 1969.He served at Fort Gibson, Woodall, Aline, Cleo Springs, Fargo, May, Shidler/Grainola/

Foraker, Hydro, OKC-Selecman, OKC-St. Paul, Alva-Otterbein, and the Edgewood charge at Hartshorne and Haileyville. Rev. Bottoms was first appointed in 1966 and retired in 1991.

He was also a genealogist and member of WWII Sub Vets, serving as both a national and state chaplain. Survivors include four sons, Keith L. Bottoms of Broken Arrow, Carl S. Bottoms of Ponca City, Glen E. Bottoms of The Colony, Texas, and Leslee Dale Bottoms of Wagoner; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

His wife, Verna, preceded him in death on Feb. 5, 2006. Funeral service was Feb. 7 at Wagoner-First UMC, with burial at Maple Grove Cemetery

in Seminole. Arrangements were by Hersman-Nichols Funeral Home of Wagoner.

paul DouglaS BowleSRev. Dr. Paul Douglas Bowles, 63, of Ramona died June 27, 2006. He was pastor of

Bartlesville-First United Methodist Church at the time of his death.Paul was born Oct. 7, 1942, in Boston, Mass., to Rev. Lovell Lee and Mary Lois

Archerd Bowles. He earned degrees at the University of Oklahoma, Perkins School of Theology, and

Drew Theological Seminary.Paul Bowles married Mary Jane Stanton on June 17, 1966, in Houston, Texas.Dr. Bowles received his license to preach at age 17. During college he was given student

appointments to Calvin/Gertie, Byars, Noble, Kingston/Woodville, and Briar/Glen.

He was ordained as an elder in 1967. He founded St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church in Tulsa. During his 45 years of ministry he also served at Ponca City-St. Paul’s, Norman-St. Stephen’s, Miami-First, OKC-Nichols Hills, and Bartlesville-First.

He was superintendent of Clinton and Tulsa Districts. He also served as Conference Ministry Youth Fellowship president, Conference Missionary Secretary, a Conference trustee, Conference Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry chairman, Conference Council on Finance and Administration chairman, a delegate to Jurisdictional and General Conferences, a trustee of the Oklahoma United Methodist Foundation, chairman of the board for Oklahoma Methodist Manor, and a trustee of Oklahoma City University.

He founded the Miami Region Soccer Association.Survivors include his wife; two sons, William Lee Bowles of Oklahoma City and John

Christopher Bowles of Plano, Texas; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Reich of Silver Spring, Md.; and two grandchildren.

Memorial service was held July 1 at Bartlesville-First, with arrangements by Walker-Brown Funeral Home.

cecil Dene Brown anD SuSan J. BrownRev. Dr. C. Dene Brown, 71, of Moore died Jan. 29, 2007. His wife, Susan Jernigan

Brown, 69, died on Feb. 26, 2007.Dene was born on Dec. 26, 1935, in Anadarko, Okla. He served in the U.S. Air Force for

20 years. He earned a doctorate in education from the University of Oklahoma, a master’s degree in clinical counseling from OU, and a Master of Divinity from Duke University. He was ordained as an elder in 1963.

Susan Jane was born March 23, 1939, to Marvin and Martha Jernigan. She grew up in Virginia and North Carolina. She earned a law degree from the University of Tulsa and practiced law in the Oklahoma City area for 15 years.

Dene and Susan Brown were married for 49 years.Beginning in 1961, Rev. Brown served in North Carolina, Baltimore-Washington, and

Oklahoma Conferences. He directed Skyline Urban Ministry in Oklahoma City from 1995 until his retirement in 2001.

Oklahoma churches he served include Wheatland, OKC-Lambuth, OKC-Southern Hills, Tulsa-Memorial Drive, Moore-First, Putnam City, and OKC-Epworth. He was a military chaplain during 1966-1969.

Survivors include three children, Barry, Joel, and Holli; and four grandchildren.Celebration service for Rev. Brown was Feb. 3 at Moore-First UMC, with burial at Sunset

Memorial Park in Norman. Service for Susan Brown was March 3 at OKC-St. Andrew’s UMC. Arrangements were by Smith and Kernke of Oklahoma City.

otto elling Jr.Rev. Otto Elling Jr., 93, of Yukon died Dec. 2, 2006.Otto was born March 22, 1913, in Lawton, Okla., to Otto H. and Helen Mae Pool Elling.

During childhood, he attended Wesley Chapel church, which was located on family land west of Lawton. His first career was ranching.

He became a pastor in 1951, retiring in 1979. He was ordained as an elder in 1956. He served churches at Duncan-Stephens, Snyder, Mountain Park, Wilburton, Konawa, Sasakwa, Jones, Newkirk, and Prairie Chapel.

He was known as “the preacher with a racket,” and he received the Marlboro Award in 1967 for contributions to the sport of tennis.

Survivors include a son, Ronald W. Elling, and a daughter, Janelle Rounsaville, both of Yukon; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Libbie Black Elling.Funeral service was Dec. 5 at Yanda & Son Funeral Home Chapel in Yukon, with burial

at Yukon Cemetery.

richarD h. FoxRev. Richard Howell Fox, 77, of Edmond, died March 10, 2007.Richard Howell was born July 26, 1929, in Davenport, Iowa, to Howell Taylor Fox and

Eula Brown Fox. He graduated from Texas Christian University and Phillips Seminary. He served in the U.S. Air Force.

He worked for British Petroleum for 30 years. Richard and Peggy A. Patrick Fox were married 20 years.He was ordained an elder in 1991 and served in the Oklahoma Conference from 1986

until retirement in 1995. He was pastor at Hunter and McCloud.Survivors include his wife, Peggy; four daughters, Eileen Fox-Biswell of Norman,

Emily Fox of Tulsa, Elise Kaub of Tulsa, and Edith Sample of Joplin, Mo.; two stepsons, Rich Patrick of Katy, Texas, and Robert Patrick of Denton, Texas; one stepdaughter, Susan Ogilvy of Denton, Texas; five grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn Mayhew Fox.

Memorial service was March 13 at Edmond-First UMC. Burial was at Gracelawn Cemetery. Arrangements were by Baggerley Funeral Home of Edmond.

John henry KappRev. John Henry Kapp, 72, of Frankfurt, Germany, died Dec. 5, 2006. John Henry was born March 25, 1934, in Muskogee, Okla. He graduated from the

University of Oklahoma and received a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Perkins School of Theology.

He served as an associate pastor at Ardmore-First United Methodist Church from 1960 to 1973. He was assigned to Honorable Location in 1974. He moved to Germany, and was active in the life of a church at Petterweil, Germany.

Survivors include a brother, Paul Kapp of Kansas City, Mo.; and a sister, Geraldine Kapp Egan of Santa Fe, N.M.

Memorial service was held Dec. 17 at the Petterweil church where he had been the caretaker during his retirement.

horace M. MuDDRev. Horace M. Mudd, 95, of Taos, N.M., died Dec. 26, 2006.Horace was born Jan. 18, 1911, in Greenville, Texas, to Altha N. and Martha Crockett

Mudd. He attended Northeast Oklahoma A&M College.His early work included blacksmithing in the U.S. Army, working for Douglas Aircraft,

and owning a propane delivery service. He was a Mason.Rev. Mudd was licensed to preach in 1950 and ordained as an elder in 1954. He served churches at Foyil, Fairland, Welch, Weleetka, Konawa, Pawnee, Okemah,

Laverne, Rosston, Boise City, and Mooreland. A number of churches completed building or remodeling projects during his term of

service with them. He helped build and dedicate Fairland and Welch churches and consecrated the Laverne

church. He retired in 1981 and moved to Taos in 1982. In his 90s, he served daily as a volunteer

chaplain at a Taos hospital.Survivors include five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded

in death by Lorena, his first wife, and Esther, his second; by a son, Rev. E. Ronal Mudd,

also formerly of Oklahoma Conference; and by a daughter, Etta Jewell.Memorial service was Dec. 28 at Plaza de Retiro in Taos. Service in Oklahoma was

Feb. 16 at the Chelsea Cemetery, with arrangements by Seaman-Blanke Funeral Service of Chelsea.

alBert peaKRev. Albert Peak, 87, of Waco, Texas, died June 3, 2006.Albert was born on Sept. 22, 1918, in Roswell, N.M., to Samuel Robert and Ora Lena

Duncan Peak.He attended Cameron University, Oklahoma City University, and Perkins School of

Theology. Peak was ordained as an elder in 1955.He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Lubbock, Texas. He also was a farmer

and cabinetmaker. He served in the U.S. Army 1940-1944. He was a member of Disabled American

Veterans and the American Legion.Albert Peak and Lillian Hickman married on Jan. 7, 1943, in Frederick. She died in

1988.He served churches in Oklahoma and New Mexico, 1951-1984. In Oklahoma, he served

at Randlett, Cache, Minco, Baker, Union Center, Geary, Jay, Hominy, Tulsa-Trinity, Braman, Fargo, Fort Supply, Krebs, Velma, and Hugo-Wesley. He retired in 1984.

He relocated to Waco in 1988.Survivors include two sons, Joe Peak of Stillwater and Robert “Bob” Peak of Eddy,

Texas; one daughter, Kelly Milner of Searcy, Ark.; and four grandchildren.Service was June 8 at Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home of Marlow. Burial was at

Marlow Cemetery.

howarD w. roBertSRev. Howard W. Roberts, 88, of Oklahoma City died Jan. 31, 2007.Howard was born July 21, 1918, in Taloga, Okla., to William and Lora Harbour Roberts.

After attending Oklahoma City University, he studied at Perkins School of Theology. He met Louise Shook while attending OCU, and they married on Aug. 16, 1942, at

Cogar.He was ordained as an elder in 1947. He served as a pastor for almost 40 years.Rev. Roberts served at Cogar, Lookeba, Homestead, Lawton-Wesley, Apache, Cheyenne,

Elk City, Mountain View, Buffalo, Wakita, Carnegie, Skiatook, Harrah, Olustee, Elmer, Antlers, Fort Cobb, Highland, OKC-Second, Newcastle, Crescent, and Marshall. He also was pastor at Collinsville and Tioga in the North Texas Conference. He retired in 1980.

He was a Mason and had received his 50-year pin in 2006.Survivors include his wife; two sons, Darryl Roberts and Sam Roberts; three daughters,

Kyle Dahlem, Kaye Roberts, and Laura Harmon; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial service was Feb. 4 at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel in Oklahoma City.

williaM gorDon SpencerRev. William Gordon Spencer, 85, of Tulsa died Aug. 25, 2006. Gordon was born March 30, 1921, in Muskogee, Okla., to B.R. Spencer and Anna Mae

Blackwood Spencer. He graduated from the University of Tulsa and from Garrett Theological Seminary. He

served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.Gordon Spencer and Marilyn Louise Garrison married in 1947.He received his license to preach at age 18 and was ordained as an elder in 1952.

Rev. Spencer served churches from 1946 until his retirement in 1987. They included: Tulsa-Lake Station, Stilwell-Zion, Stigler, Turley, Weatherford, Dewey, Enid-St. Luke’s, OKC-Britton, Tulsa-Boston Avenue, and two churches in Illinois.

At Boston Avenue, he helped develop Parents Anonymous (now Parent Child Center of Tulsa), Deaf Ministries, Parents of Murdered Children, Respite Care, Neighbor for Neighbor, and Volunteers In Mission teams, among other ministries.

After his retirement as a pastor, he opened a private counseling service.Survivors include his wife and five children and their families, Gary Spencer of

Stillwater, Teresa Holder of Perkins, Bob Spencer of Stillwater, Laurie Cajamarca, and Brenda Spencer of Tulsa. He was preceded in death by a son, Brett Spencer.

Service was held Aug. 29 at Boston Avenue UMC, and burial was at Stillwater Fairlawn Cemetery. Arrangements were by Moore’s Rosewood Funeral Home.

John cheSter StowRev. John C. Stow, 79, of Waynoka died Jan. 29, 2007.John Chester was born Feb. 28, 1927, in Vici, Okla., to Archie Stow and Gertie Larison

Stow. He graduated from Oklahoma City University. He was ordained as an elder in 1957.While serving Soper and Boswell churches, he met Carole Dean Bozeman, and they

married on April 12, 1953. She preceded him in death in 1973.John Stow and Lorene Bixler married on Jan. 3, 1981, at Waynoka.Rev. Stow began serving churches in Oklahoma Conference in 1949, and he retired

in 1991. He was pastor at Choctaw, Luther, Boswell, Soper, Valliant, OKC-Selecman, Jet, Temple, Healdton, Okemah, Tulsa-University, Tulsa-Southern Hills, OKC-Douglas Boulevard, Muskogee-Trinity, Prague, Arlington, Chickasha-Epworth, Waynoka, Cheyenne Valley, Bartlesville-Grace Epworth, Tulsa-St. Paul’s, Ponca City-First, Cheyenne, Davis, and Fairfax.

Survivors include his wife, Lorene; a son, Glenn Stow of Shawnee; a daughter, Chery Dobbs of Afton; and three grandchildren.

Funeral was Feb. 3 at Wesley United Methodist Church in El Reno, and burial was at Soper.

gail e. BarBerGail Everett Barber, 68, of Hollis died Nov. 26, 2006. He was the husband of Rev. Sara

Ann “Sally” Barber, who is pastor at Hollis and Gould United Methodist Churches.Gail was born Feb. 25, 1938, in Satanta, Kan., to Orville and Wilma Barber. Gail Barber

and Sally Courtney married on July 21, 1957, in Independence, Kan.He was a member of Enid-New Hope UMC. He recently had been attending the

churches where Rev. Barber is pastor. He worked for farm cooperatives for 34 years before his retirement. He enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors include Rev. Barber; twin sons, Greg Barber of Enid and Tim Barber of Perry; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was Nov. 30 at New Hope UMC. Memorial service was Dec. 4 at Hollis-First UMC.

eDna Mae ByerlyEdna Mae Byerly, 88, died June 26, 2006, in Dallas, Texas. She was the widow of Rev.

Kenneth Martin Byerly, who died in January 1986.Edna Mae was born on Oct. 17, 1917. She and Kenneth Byerly married on Aug.

16, 1939. They shared the same birth date and year. He served churches in Oklahoma

and New York from 1949 until retirement in 1983. She was an active church member and volunteer.

Survivors include two sons, Paul Byerly of Richardson, Texas, and Mark Byerly of Pleasanton, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Funeral service was June 30 in Tulsa.

Mary c. clayMary Cleveland Clay, 90, of Oneonta, N.Y., died Nov. 14, 2006. She was the widow

of Rev. Derwood A. Clay, who died in 1980.Mary was born Nov. 12, 1916, in Crystal City, Texas, to Charles and Emma Harris

Cleveland. Her father was a Methodist clergyman. Her career as a piano teacher spanned almost 40 years. She volunteered as a hospice counselor and at an adult daycare center in Oklahoma City. She moved to New York in 1996.

Mary Cleveland and Derwood Clay married in 1937 in Allen. Rev. Clay served churches in Oklahoma and also taught high school English and speech.

Survivors include a son, Carleton Clay of West Laurens, N.Y.; a daughter, Ann C. Smith of London, England; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were by Johnston Funeral Home of Morris, N.Y.

Billie J. cooKBillie Jo Slaughter Cook, 76, of Smithville, Mo., died Aug. 31, 2006. She was the wife

of Rev. W. Wayne Cook, retired pastor.Billie Jo was born Nov. 11, 1929, in Okemah, Okla., to Myrtle Harned and Henry

Slaughter. She was a bookkeeper and taught Sunday school.Billie and Wayne Cook were married for 58 years. Rev. Cook served Oklahoma churches

from 1974 until his retirement in 1995. In recent years, the couple moved to Smithville, near where their daughter lives.

Survivors include Rev. Cook; four children, Gwen, David, and Mark Cook, all of Oklahoma City, and Susan Cook of Kansas City, Mo.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A family memorial service was held in Oklahoma City.

Sue SMith DielSue Smith Diel, 88, of Yukon died July 3, 2006. She was the widow of Rev. Robert

Warren Smith, who died in 1995. Sue was born in 1918, in Little Rock, Ark., to Mr. and Mrs. E.O. Bagley.Sue and Robert married on June 24, 1941. Rev. Smith served churches from 1938 to

1981. He was a superintendent in three districts. In May 1996, Sue married M.A. Diel. She was a homemaker and a realtor/broker. She directed the Spanish Cove Retirement

Village choir for many years.Survivors include her husband, M.A.; son Stephen Smith of Tulsa; stepdaughters Joi

Dell Salisbury of Tulsa and Sue Ayn Moore of Clinton; three grandchildren, including Rev. Jeremy Smith of Oklahoma Conference; and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral service was July 7 at Mercer-Adams Chapel in Bethany.

ralph l. gooDRalph Lloyd Good, 77, of Cleveland died March 6, 2007. He was the husband of Rev.

Faye Good, retired pastor.Ralph was born Jan. 11, 1930, in Pawnee, Okla., to Floyd James “Hap” Good and

Florence Ruth Watson Good. His first wife, Betty Joanne Frost Good, preceded him in death in 1968.

Ralph Good and Faye Bracy married in 1976. In 2005, they relocated to Cleveland, Okla.

Ralph Good was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. He was an industrial engineer and corporate officer. He traveled widely during his professional career, and operated a farm in his retirement.

He also was an active layperson, volunteering as a youth leader and Bible study leader. He was a member of Cleveland-First UMC.

Survivors include Rev. Good; two sons, James Good of Houston, Texas, and Alan Bracy of Oak Grove, Calif.; three daughters, Sharon Everett of Lake St. Louis, Mo., Rebecca Eytcheson of Ripley, and Shelly Bishop of Clinton; and eight grandchildren.

Arrangements were private.

eDith Marie groSeEdith Marie Grose, 90, of Oil Center died Nov. 25, 2006. She was the widow of Rev.

Ernest H. Grose, who died in 1974.Edith Marie was born Nov. 30, 1915, at Valliant, Okla., to Dock O’Neal and Josephine

Pearl Fair Teague. Edith and E.H. Grose married on Sept. 28, 1948, in DeQueen, Ark.Mrs. Grose worked as a nurse. She also served as a United Methodist district youth

director in southeastern Oklahoma.Survivors include four daughters, Alta Power of Haworth, Audrey Vanlandingham

and Nancy McDaniel, both of Oil Center, and Mary Patton of Stonewall; two sons, Floyd Vanlandingham of Woodward and George Vanlandingham of Fargo; two stepdaughters, Peggy and Mignon; 13 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

Service was Nov. 29 at Oil Center Pentecostal Holiness Church.

ruth e. gruBBRuth Esther Johnson Grubb, 92, died on March 4, 2006. She was the widow of Rev.

A. Blair Grubb, who died in 2000.Ruth was born on April 12, 1914, near Lewis, Kan., to Rev. Levi and Emma Pontius

Johnson.Ruth Johnson and Blair Grubb married on Aug. 6, 1936, in Booker. Rev. Grubb served churches for more than 40 years. The couple retired to Fowler, Kan.She was a homemaker. She was a church organist and pianist for more than 60 years.

She was active in church and community organizations, including senior citizens groups in Fowler.

Survivors include one son, Rev. Larry Grubb of Fort Worth, Texas; two daughters, Kay Griffin and Rev. Helen Taylor, both of Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial service was March 15 at First United Methodist Church in Fort Worth.

Maurine l. MurrayMaurine Laing Murray, 72, of Milburn died Feb. 19, 2007. She was the wife of Rev. Charles Lenn Murray, retired pastor.Maurine was born Jan. 8, 1928, in Cisco, Texas. She was an automobile tag agent for

several years. She was a member of Frederick-First Christian Church.She married Lenn Murray of Quinlan on Jan. 11, 1991. Rev. Murray served churches in

Oklahoma from 1993 to 2005. Upon his retirement, the couple moved to Tishomingo.Survivors include Rev. Murray; one daughter, Linda Reddin of Humble, Texas; one son,

Robert “Bob” Laing of Tishomingo; two grandsons; and one great-granddaughter. Her first husband, D.H. “Cap” Laing Jr., preceded her in death in 1987. Funeral service was March 3 at Federick-First United Methodist Church.

FranceS w. polSonFrances W. “Fran” Polson, 80, of Perkins died April 16, 2007. She was the wife of Rev.

Marvin Martin Polson, retired pastor.Fran was born on Sept. 24, 1926, in San Pedro, Calif., to Chauncey Porter Wright and

Charlotte Pritchard Wright. She met Marvin, a sailor, in a San Pedro church during World War II. Fran and Marvin

Polson married on Sept. 7, 1946, in Glendale, Calif.She earned a degree in physical education at the University of Dayton in Ohio. She was a homemaker and a volunteer, especially for activities involving her children

and grandchildren. She attended Perkins-First UMC.Rev. Polson began serving as a minister in Oklahoma Conference in 1952. The Polsons

moved to Perkins after his retirement in 1995.Survivors include Rev. Polson; two sons, Skip Polson of Chapel Hill, NC, and

Peter Polson of Park Hill; four daughters, Sunny Isenhower of Macomb, Lori Cornelsen of Norman, Jan Polson of Oklahoma City, and Hope Robertson of Winslow, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was April 20 at Perkins-First UMC and burial was at Green Hills Memorial Park in Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif.

cora glaDyS powellCora Gladys Powell, 96, of Wyandotte, died June 23, 2006. She was the widow of Rev.

Carl E. Powell, who died in 1962.Cora Gladys was born May 8, 1910, in Wyandotte, Okla., to Ulysses Grant Wright and

Maude Blackorbay Wright. Cora Wright and Carl Powell married on Oct. 9, 1939, at the Sycamore Chapel United

Methodist Church’s parsonage.She worked in Tahlequah as a housemother at Northeastern State University and at the

United Methodist Children’s Home.She was an enrolled member of the Wyandotte Nation. She was a member of Sycamore Chapel UMC.Survivors include two daughters, Carla J. Culver of Wyandotte and Shirley Shockey of

Granby, Mo.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

VerDDie M. ShannonVerddie Mae Shannon, 79, died June 28, 2006.She was the widow of Rev. Eddie Frederick Shannon Jr., who died in 1993.Verddie Mae was born Sept. 7, 1926, at Wybark, a small community near Muskogee,

Okla., to Millie and Jackson Perryman.She was a Licensed Practical Nurse and a Certified Recreational Therapist. She worked

at a hospital and a veterans center, retiring in 1990.She was a longtime, active member of New Life United Methodist Church in Moore.

She chaired the Black History Month Programs for several years.Survivors include one son, Eddie Frederick “Buddy” Shannon III; and two daughters,

Jacqueline “Pat” Haskins and Debra Debro of Oklahoma City; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was July 8 at New Life UMC.

ella M. SiFForDElla Mae Burch Carter Sifford, 98, of Hollis died Jan. 27, 2007. She was the widow of

Rev. Edward G. Sifford, who died in 2001. Ella was born July 1, 1908, in Bromide, Okla., to Benjamin Franklin and Ola Bates Burch.

Ella and Rev. Edward Sifford married in 1974. They moved to Hollis when Rev. Sifford retired in 1981.

She had been a member of Hollis-First UMC since 1981. Survivors include a daughter, Norma Sue Carter Robinson of Hollis; two stepdaughters, Dana Zerger and Jessie Feather; two stepsons, Eddie Sifford and Kenny Sifford; three grandsons; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Ray Sailor Carter, in 1972.Funeral service was Jan. 29 at Hollis-First UMC.

hazel B. SteelHazel Balch Steel, 91, of Dallas, Texas, died Oct. 3, 2006. She was the widow of Rev.

John R. Steel, who died in 1944.Hazel was born Nov. 6, 1914, in Hugo, Okla. Hazel and John Steel met while attending

college in Durant. Rev. Steel was a captain in the Chaplain Corps for the U.S. Army. In World War II, he was killed in action on D-Day. He had served churches in Oklahoma and Texas.

Mrs. Steel began teaching school in Pauls Valley, then taught for 35 years in Dallas. She was also a church organist, Peace Corps volunteer, and brailler certified by the Library of Congress. She was a member of White Rock UMC in Dallas.

Survivors include a son, John David Steel of Carrollton, Texas; a daughter, Lillian Stephens; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial service was Oct. 14 at White Rock UMC.

BoBBie c. watKinSBobbie Charles Thompson Watkins, 59, of Sayre died Oct. 12, 2006. She was the wife

of Rev. Delbert Alvin “Del” Watkins Jr., pastor at Sayre-First United Methodist Church.Bobbie Charles was born Sept. 22, 1947, in Columbus, Ga., to John Joseph and Dorothy

Naomi Whitehurst Thompson. Bobbie and “Del” Watkins were high-school sweethearts who married on May 6, 1966.

They lived in North Dakota and Colorado before moving to Oklahoma in 1993.Mrs. Watkins was a school teacher and a director of after-school, child-care, and

summer camp programs. She also loved clown ministry and was a graduate of Clown College in Denver. For more than 30 years, she worked with children and youths in schools and churches.

She was a member of Sayre-First UMC, United Methodist Women, and As You Like It.Survivors include Rev. Watkins.Funeral was Oct. 16 at Sayre-First UMC.

pauline r. williaMSPauline Rosalee Williams, 92, of Tulsa died Feb. 16, 2007. She was the widow of Rev.

Alva H. Williams, who died in 1980.Pauline Rosalee was born Feb. 12, 1915, in Ellis County, Oklahoma, to Rollin and

Emma Wilde Gillette. She received a master’s degree in education at the University of Oklahoma.She was a member of Muskogee-St. Paul UMC, where she taught Sunday school, and

of the board for Oklahoma Methodist Manor.She also was a Girl Scout leader, serving as director of the Lakewood Council for

almost 40 years. Camp Pauline Williams at Fort Gibson was named in her honor. The City of Muskogee declared April 25, 1982, as Pauline Williams Day.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Eunice Ballew of Broken Arrow and Rachel Beasley of Oklahoma City; a son, James Dean Williams of Oklahoma City; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral was Feb. 20 at St. Paul UMC.
