“The first wave of the AIDS epidemic, being gay, were largely ignored by society and the

powers that be. The gay community included people who were well-educated and had

resources to draw upon in order to improve their own situations... The people affected

in the second wave don’t have these resources – they often don’t have an education,

they don’t have access to medical care and so on. It’s pretty frightening. What’s going

to become of those people?”Dr. Peter Jepson-Young, March, 1991

Dr. Peter’s Legacy

The only program of its

kind in Canada, the

Dr. Peter Centre provides

leading-edge care and

support to improve

the overall health of

people most in need,

particularly individuals

with added issues of

addiction, mental illness,

homelessness and other

life disadvantages.

Extraordinary Care • Extraordinary People

Dr. Peter believed that there was no substitute for the ongoing involvement and support of caring people, and

understood that persons living with HIV/AIDS have many needs far greater than just survival. His vision and

compassion endure in the work of the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation.

Dr. Peter Jepson-Young was a young Vancouver-based physician

diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1985. When his condition became too

debilitating to continue practising medicine, he sought to inform

and educate the public and others living with HIV/AIDS by filming

The Dr. Peter Diaries. In 111 television episodes broadcast on CBC TV

over two years, Dr. Peter used honesty, pathos and humour to share

his experience, bringing a human face and a human touch to the

epidemic at a time when too few knew the difference between myth

and medical reality.

Days before his death in 1992, Dr. Peter established the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation to provide comfort care for

people living with HIV/AIDS. Prophetically, he saw the landscape of HIV/AIDS changing and knew the needs

of those affected would become more complex.

We are thrilled to debut the new logo for the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation in the pages of this 2007/08 Annual

Report. The logo combines the legacy of Dr. Peter’s name with the red ribbon, an established symbol of

support and compassion in the fight for a cure for AIDS. The new logo creates a bold and unmistakable identity

for the organization.

The Dr. Peter Centre has earned a local, national, and international reputation for its leading-edge care,

particularly for its success in the intersect of HIV/AIDS, mental illness, and addiction care. The new logo will

be a very recognizable symbol as we expand our presence in the world beyond Vancouver. This is particularly

important as we move forward with the Foundation’s 2006-09 directional interests for increased capacity to

provide care and to share our model of care with others.

This past year, planning continued for the joint venture project on Vancouver’s Eastside with Vancouver Native

Health Society and Vancouver Native Housing Society. The timeline for completion is 2011/2012. Discussions also

began with Fraser Health Authority for a Dr. Peter Centre in the Surrey area. Fraser Health Authority has the second

highest HIV/AIDS population in the province. The project involves collaboration with BC Housing, Fraser Health

Authority, BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, and St. Paul’s Hospital Immunodeficiency Clinic.

In 07/08, we again hosted national and international health care professionals and health and housing design

specialists. As the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation moves forward, there are so many more individuals to whom we

can give the gift of additional years of life – in the current Dr. Peter Centre; in the new Dr. Peter Centres being

planned for in Metro Vancouver; and in Centres around the world inspired by what we do. We are literally

changing the world of HIV/AIDS care.

Until there is a cure, I ask for your support.

Sincerely,

Maxine Davis

Executive Director, Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation

Dear Friends of the Dr. Peter Centre

It has been my honour to return in a leadership role with the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation. It is an organization

rich in history, compassion and commitment, and I am pleased to work to improve the lives of people living

with HIV/AIDS.

Much has changed since I served on the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation Board from 2001 to 2005 and Co-Chaired

the Capital Campaign Committee to build the present Dr. Peter Centre. The demographics of HIV/AIDS

continue to evolve and become more complex. So too does the organization as it responds to meet the changing

needs of the people we serve.

The Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation has strengthened its administrative infrastructure and built capacity to

meet the demands of the organization and our community. With a strong board of directors, sound financial

management and a commitment to performance quality, we are well positioned to expand our mission.

Like any great organization, the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation knows what it does best and sticks to it with

enthusiasm, diligence and discipline. With our clear vision, deep passion and solid understanding of our skill

in caring for people living with HIV/AIDS, we are ready for the next chapter.

I welcome the opportunity as Board Chair to help this organization grow, share our model of care with other

health care providers, and build more Dr. Peter Centres in more communities so people with HIV/AIDS will

have the specialized health care they need – closest to where they live.

Sincerely,

John deC. Evans

Chair, Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation

“People living with HIV/AIDS

are often isolated from family,

friends and community.

run programs, provides a safe

and caring environment. I have

“To me, the Dr. Peter AIDS

Foundation is the quintessential

combination of a clear mandate,

a professional and caring staff,

a strong leadership team and a

dedicated group of volunteers.

The results of this combination

represent a paradigm shift – for

its clients, for government and

health care agencies, and for

society generally. I am very proud

to be a supporter of the Dr. Peter

AIDS Foundation.”

What Our Friends are Saying A Sense of Home

Every weekday morning at 9 am, the doors to the Dr. Peter Centre

open to welcome our Day Health Program participants. They

come here for health care, comfort and the chance to belong to a

community that respects them and honours their individual choices.

More than 300 people a year in our Day Health Program receive

full access to health care and treatment support, nutritious meals,

counselling services, music and art therapy, recreational and

complementary therapies, and a social support network of staff,

peers and volunteers. Nurses are present for medication assistance,

wound care, consultation for symptom management and health

assessments. Dr. Peter residents also have full access to all Day

Health programs and services.

The Dr. Peter Centre is a special place providing safety, support and

a sense of home for people who often do not have family, friends

or shelter to rely on. It is a place of acceptance and inclusion where

strength and hope are possible.

Jeff was brought to the Dr. Peter Centre from hospital in

January, 2005. He weighed 100 pounds, had double pneumonia

and was given days to live. “I guess they brought me to the

Residence because it was a nice place to pass. I was brought here

to die,” he says.

Jeff ’s Story“Never tell a logger, he can’t do something. He’ll prove you wrong… Logging separates the men from the boys,” he says. “It is inside of me. It’s all I had left when I lost my wife and kids (to divorce).”

Jeff ’s enthusiasm and pride are evident as he speaks of his career, of the hard physical work, responsibility, constant learning curve, ever-changing weather, camaraderie and sheer beauty of being surrounded by nature. He says he was destroyed and wanted to end his life when the company he had worked for shut down in 2002. He returned to Chilliwack, “got hooked up with the wrong person,” and eventually contracted HIV.

Jeff spent a year and a half in Residence at the Dr. Peter Centre, building a number of strong friendships with other residents and finding the will to go on. Today, he lives on his own in a downtown apartment and participates in the Day Health Program. He rarely misses breakfast at the Centre and also spends a number of hours each week helping in the Café.

“I’m an active guy – I can’t just sit around. Even when I was young and learning to put on my shoes, my mom was always trying to tie me to the clothesline. I loved trains and used to go near the tracks. She had to keep a close eye on me.”

Jeff is also a fan of model trains and has built model structures, even whole villages, over the years. He can often be found in the DPC Art Studio working on his craft. As he glances at the long wall of windows in the Café, his dream is to build a replica of the Dr. Peter Centre.

“The Centre gives me a purpose to carry on. I have nothing else,” he says matter-of-factly. “Some days I don’t want to leave. I don’t want to go home and be alone.

“My whole life I was always here to help… This is like family – as sick as they are, even myself. Still today, my life is better by helping others… I want someone to remember me.”

He doesn’t recall much about those days – “I was mad at everyone. I didn’t even know where I was. I was mixed up and couldn’t put two words together,” he says – but slowly and steadily, his health was restored. He attributes it to the tremendous care he received in the Residence, and suspects his “ornery” mood (he eventually earned the nickname “Crusty” from a staff member) also had something to do with it.

Jeff comes by his tenacity honestly. Now 51, he worked in the forest industry for 26 years, including six years as a hook tender supervising and coordinating the activities of a team. Not bad for a guy who is scared of heights.

“I am continuously amazed by my

experience volunteering at the DPC. It

is wonderful as a volunteer to have

both the DPC’s clients and staff show

genuine appreciation for every Friday

morning that I spend at the Centre…

I have volunteered at

several organizations

over the years and I can

say without hesitation

that my experience at the DPC has

been by far the most rewarding – not

only in the appreciation shown to me,

but also for the opportunity I have

had in meeting and interacting with

clients and staff.”
