Words of Advice to Students Get experience as early as possible. Start with an internship as early in your college career as possible and work your way up with additional internships, part-time jobs or a full time job if you can handle it. Self-study is more important now than ever before. Focus on getting an opportunity related to your major/minor regardless of compensation.

Words of Advice to Students Finish your degree! Although I am unemployed right now, finishing school at the University of MN was the best thing I ever did for myself. Get as much experience as you can while you are in school. Also, start early in your search for a job following graduation. Don't focus too much on one specific degree. When you are looking for jobs after college it is amazing how many opportunities are available, and it doesn't make sense to put yourself in a position where your opportunities are limited. Search for jobs early unless you plan on taking time off. The same thing goes for grad school planning. Don’t take out too many loans. Stand by your own sense of what is right and what is wrong. As you step into the working world there is a culture that seems to dictate behavior and sometimes decisions - it may seem counterintuitive, but because this culture is strong, and you will be new, you might think it best to stay quiet and let things flow and allow this culture to shape who you are as a professional. However, most cultures alive in dominant career paths need to be revamped for the good of most people involved - it is up to our generation to begin to shape a new righteous, logical, professional culture. Other than the parking situation at the U of M campus, I think it is a wonderful school. Do a lot of internships! Gain "real world" experience! I wish I would have done more. Do an internship, volunteer, study abroad, and be involved in extracurricular activities relevant to your desired occupation. Experience matters! 1. Get to know your professors. 2. Network. 3. Get internships early. PREPARE EARLY! Most of the students and friends I know graduated and THEN started looking for Jobs; however, campus recruiting resources are incredibly useful and you should start as early as the semester BEFORE you graduate – that’s when I found my Job. Be diligent in the internship/work experience process. Just because "most" people don't get internships freshman and sophomore year doesn't mean you can't. It’s entirely possible, and often will make all the difference. Also, never burn bridges, and connect with every single professor you have. I have encouraged a few people to check out the CCE programs at the University of MN. I found the Multidisciplinary Studies program worked great for me. Also, I would encourage more people to consider full time classes as a way to save money and speed up the path to their degree. Enroll in a variety of courses in the beginning so that you can make a more informed decision in your choice of major. Take a breadth of courses so that your knowledge is well-rounded. Apply for and seek financial aid immediately - college is too expensive for Americans. Participate in an internship or two in your prospective field. It's not all about school. Although it is important, additional volunteer, internship, and work experience is just as valuable.

Words of Advice to Students Be willing to re-locate. Do a lot of research and reading to find out about less conventional options for a career. Try to connect with a subject that you find intellectually AND emotionally satisfying. Consider real world applications of your learning and consider how you can help others. Also, remember that learning is a lifelong pursuit that happens in many contexts and environments. Seek out programs and advisors who understand your learning style. Be confident in your own life experiences and understandings. You have value and deserve to have the best educational experience possible. Be sure to count the costs, both financial and otherwise, but do not let money be your sole focus. Just get started and try a few different approaches until you find what works for you.

Words of Advice to Students Internships are a great way to get connected with a company. I did two, and I ended up getting a job offer from the second one. They also offer great experience that you can speak to on your resume. Own your development. It's not up to teachers or anyone else to push you to do your best. Your career preparation depends on the time and effort you put into it. A degree isn't what will get you a job. What you do in the time that you get that degree is what will set you apart. Find internships before your senior year and do as many of them as possible. Make your resume and portfolio stand out. Do as many informational interviews as possible. Networking is very important, as is an online portfolio. Build relationship in your field or the field you want to be in, and be sure they know you are looking for a job. I found that the design industry is incredibly competitive, and it seems that many people get jobs based entirely on who they know, and not necessarily how well they did in school. Get as involved with the industry as you can while in school.

Words of Advice to Students Just do what you love, and a career will fall into place. Try not to get too caught up in where life is headed, just find your passion and soon it will become your career. Look at job postings in your field to find out what skill sets employers are looking for and take courses based on your findings. Get out into the field and get related experience while you are still in school. Take into consideration the current job market when choosing a major. Make sure you take classes in AutoCAD and other computer aided design programs during the summer. The University teaches theory and craft very well, but does not place a big emphasis on technology. You will need these skills to secure a job with an undergraduate degree.

Words of Advice to Students Go out and get some real-world experience to supplement your coursework. If you want to specialize in web design, take courses outside the graphic design program. Absolutely find an internship relevant to your interests! Network and make lots of friends in the design profession! Start looking for a job during your junior year, and try to have something locked up then. When you're working on projects (for your portfolio), shape them to your interests. Take CSS/HTML classes if you are a designer. Every project at my new job is web-related. Make sure you network. Brand yourself. Market yourself. Get on twitter - it's in right now and very helpful. Do as many informational interviews as possible. Get to know as many people in your field as possible. Don't slack on your education. Take your internships seriously. A good internship is the closest thing you'll have to real-life experience. If you can't get a job in the field, work in retail or at a coffee shop where you can talk to people. All of my internships, interviews, and jobs have been a result of conversations with my customers in a retail job. Cut down your ego a bit. You may be talented, but you are starting at the bottom of the totem pole. Revise your portfolio until you feel proud of everything in it. Get good at typography. Don't take a job that you feel is beneath you - you won't do your best work there. Keep learning after graduation. It's super competitive out there - be smart. You hear it all the time, but it is so important to make connections and broaden the network of people you know. I found my position because of a mutual friend in an unrelated field of study. You MUST learn web design, interactive design, and FLASH!!!! After college, even if you don't get employed right away, don't stop working on projects for your portfolio. Keep working on new pieces to keep your creative juices flowing. Do tutorials and always find new ways to learn and expand your design skills. Employers really appreciate it when you bring new knowledge into the workplace. The classes you take will only scratch the surface of what you need to learn and experience to be able to get your foot in the door and be successful in a design profession. It is up to you to seek out experiences that will help you (like internships). In regards to learning Adobe software, you will need to be extremely diligent in your desire to become fluent with it. You have to want to learn it. Also in regard to technology, it is not the software programs that make good design, it is you. Practice your creativity skills as much, if not more, as you practice with the programs. A great idea executed adequately is far better than a bad idea executed perfectly. Lastly, sketch, sketch, sketch, sketch, sketch, sketch, sketch, sketch, sketch... Start looking NOW! Get an internship as soon as you can in your field, and if possible do more than one.

Words of Advice to Students Internships, job experience, and volunteer work are all important to building a resume and a skill set that employers will be impressed with. There were dozens of applicants for the job I got after graduation, and although my undergraduate degree was critical, I feel that I would never have got the job had it not been for my job and internship experience. I recommend that students do multiple internships and make the most of them. Additionally, I would encourage students to conduct informational interviews to learn more about the field that they are interested in. Finally, make the most of the Career Center. Make an appointment to meet with a counselor because they are very helpful and can provide valuable advice as well as give you direction. Do as many internships as possible. It's helpful to figure out what aspect(s) of housing studies you love the most and focus your energies there early-on. The program is quite broad, and, after you graduate, it can feel like you've just learned a little about a lot of things and not have your niche if you haven't yet decided what sort of work you want to pursue. Make personal contact with people in the specific careers you wish to pursue. Take advantage of every career exploration tool at the University you possibly can. Do not focus on the money you could make when deciding what to major in. Make sure to use the career services offered by the university. Try to attend as many career fairs as you can, they are free (mostly) at the University of Minnesota. Many other schools charge a fee to attend career fairs.

Words of Advice to Students Seek internship opportunities early and try to study abroad or intern in a different part of the country for a summer-you will gain priceless experience and perspective. Be ready to continue learning, as well as teaching, after graduation. In my experience, there is so much to learn when you start working for an employer - like calculating yardage of fabric, what direction to lay flooring, etc. In addition to learning, you will be TEACHING those you work alongside a great deal. Interior design education is SO different that it was 20 years ago when many of my co-designers were in school, and there are a great number of things I know how to do that they don't. Also, do as many internships as you can, paid or unpaid, just to get experience. It is so valuable, and you will enter the workforce with an upper hand. It is all about who you know. I would encourage conducting informational interviews outside of those required for school. They help you get yourself out there and meet professionals in your field. Do as many internships as possible. Try to be involved in activities in the community as well. Volunteer once in a while, and then put it on your resume. Do Internships! They can be a great way to transition into a job after graduation! Working with the Career Center was very helpful throughout my college experience. Stay connected with the industry and put yourself out there. It’s ALL about who you know, not what you know. Find a good internship and do your best – you may be offered a full-time job. Explore, Explore and Explore. There are numerous professions that are not regularly identified or considered that may be a good match for you.

Words of Advice to Students Look at the trends for what industries will be hot moving forward before choosing a major. Please, just listen to graduates and professors when they say DOCUMENT your work. Digitize it as you complete it because after you graduate you'll lose access to a huge array of technology at Rapson (large format scanners, photography room, plotting). Before you graduate, keep in mind that technical experience - CAD, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, GIS, internships - are more important than your education in landscape theory. This is especially true if you cannot or do not plan to move on to graduate school. If these technical experiences are not included in your degree program, find out how to get this experience on our own. Talk to professionals in industry before you enter this program because the summer hours/schedule can be very demanding. Don't underestimate the importance of your portfolio! - The department doesn't emphasize this enough. (Talk to professionals to understand their importance.)

Words of Advice to Students I highly recommend studying abroad, and make sure to do more than one internship. In addition, the mentor program can be a great way to make more contacts in the industry. Finally, try to pick up at least a part time job while you are attending college that is related to your field. Since the University of Minnesota is a large campus, you really have to reach outside your comfort zone. You have to be willing to talk to career counselors and go to career fairs. Depending on your major, I believe that work experience is crucial - so if you can handle working part-time to gain experience, do it. However, you still have to be able to focus on your school work. Take advantage of the career services the university has to offer - they are very strong and help you make useful connections. Get involved and meet people. Use mentor programs to your full advantage. Network, network, network; and get involved. Start early and practice interviewing skills often - make the Career Center your friend! Use the resources that the University provides - Career Center, job fairs, GoldPASS. They really are beneficial. Begin early and utilize the Career Center. Study abroad! Try to obtain multiple internships throughout your undergraduate years. They help you decide what you really want to do with your education and how you want to build you career. Be patient and stay focused and professional no matter how hard the career hunt gets. There are really cool internships available - you just have to put a lot of time into the search early on and be willing to go anywhere in the US to do it; once you graduate internship opportunities close. Take more design focused classes. Visit the Career Center early - you should sometime in the second semester of your freshman year or for sure your sophomore year. The amount of information they have regarding internships, job searching, getting in contact with the right people in your field, etc. makes them the best place to start with career preparation. When it comes time to start looking for a full time job for after graduation, start early and take advantage of on-campus interviews. If nothing else, they give you extra practice and are convenient! Use the internship requirement to your advantage. A lot of my peers did their internships at stores where they already worked, then found it difficult to obtain a position in a corporate environment. I sought an internship in a corporate environment and they ended up giving me a full time offer before I even started my senior year. If you know where you want to end up, definitely go there for your internship instead of settling for the easiest option. Explore your strengths and think about how you will apply them in your career.

Words of Advice to Students Take full advantage of the opportunities the University makes available you. I would recommend taking additional communication, computer and writing classes to help prepare you for the business world. The University has many career preparation services that are not used enough by some students. I would also recommend doing internships in areas outside of your chosen field of study—the experience will be well worth your time.

Words of Advice to Students Internships are some of the best opportunities available. Try to have an internship every summer, as they help you discover what you like and don't like. Use the St. Paul Campus Career Center. They offer some great services, such as the Resume Doctor! Internships and interview/resume preparation are very very important. Choose a major that leads you specifically to a career. Networking is a definite must. It is also important to watch what you're saying through social media. It is very easy to Google someone's name and find out exactly what they’re saying on Twitter or LinkedIn, or even Facebook (if your security settings aren't very high). Speaking of Google - regularly “Google-search” your name. You'd be surprised what comes up. Once you've landed a job - give it at least a year. You might dislike it the entire year, but once you're accustomed to it and know what you're doing, you might find out that you really like it - or excel in it greatly. Give everything a chance. Start pursuing internships and job experience that relate to the career path you want to choose early in your college career. Not only does it give you great work experience, it allows you to build close connections to those in your field who will help you find jobs in the future.

Words of Advice to Students Get your foot in the door to a possible future career opportunity as soon as possible. You may have grand plans, however, you need to have a back-up plan no matter how much you don't want to think like that. Job shadowing is very beneficial to career preparation and focus. Take advantage of the career fairs. Keep looking at jobs throughout your college career to see what is out there and utilize the Career Center for resume help and job help. Research the programs, make a campus visit, and meet the professors in your department before you decide which college or university to attend. Most vet clinics want to hire certified vet techs and don't care if you have a four-year degree. It's hard to make your degree work for you if you don't get into vet school. Your options are working on a dairy farm, pig farm, or with horses; but they all require experience and many don't really care how well you did in college. Have a good back-up plan if you are planning on attending graduate school or veterinary school. Make sure you find a good advisor that cares about what is best for you. Don't stay in a program if you know it isn't right for you. If you plan on enrolling in graduate school, be sure to get as much out of your undergraduate studies as possible. You are only shorting yourself on what you can learn if you limit yourself on effort. Do as many internships as possible. The best thing about the U is that it is a great place to make connections, and people really respect a degree from the U of M. Utilize the people around you, including your professors and peers—they will help you the most in getting a career. It may not be the career of your choice when you first start, but be patient and take what you can get. The experience you will gain is better than nothing. Be flexible when applying to jobs—if you are willing to relocate you have a much better chance of getting a job. I relocated to a state and city that I knew nothing about and started in a job I knew very little about. It was the best thing I could have done because I pushed myself and realized that if you work hard you can succeed at anything. Do lots of planning and preparation. The University of Minnesota does a great job with creating resources to use while a student (i.e. Goldpass, Career

Center, Strategic Career Class, Job Fairs), however, I would also like the University of Minnesota to prepare graduates for the social aspect of graduating. I graduated and moved away and struggle to make new friends. It's challenging to be successful in your job when you don't have a personal life. I think employers also need to be aware of new hires and the social boundaries they have to overcome.

Words of Advice to Students Learn how to network - that's the only way your resume is going to find its way to the top of the stack. Network! Stay focused and finish your degree as quickly as you can. Take a course on career development or finding a career. Some of it may seem trivial, but what you learn about interviewing, resumes and everything else needed in the job search is well worth the time. Jobs are scarce, but the market will rebound eventually. Try to make as many connections within your field as possible during your undergraduate experience. Your professors and advisers do wish to help you succeed. Prepare as much as possible and don’t let time slip away. This experience is gone before you know it. Work on your networking skills. Do not assume that you will get a job in your field of choice immediately. It is tough out there right now and you need to consider many different types of work if you want to be employed. Don't overlook your personal network of family and friends. It's easy to rely on programs offered through your college, but often times those are utilized by many other students, making it difficult to differentiate yourself from the "crowd". Actively look for organizations, internships, and work experiences to get involved with in order to give yourself the knowledge and experience that will set you apart from your classmates. Grades matter- especially in a time of recession. You have to start early. I had 3 interviews with the company that I received a job from over the course of 7 months. Also, if you are an undergraduate you MUST have work experiences / internships that are relevant. Look for an internship early in your college career. Don't be hesitant to change your major – it’s common and you would rather end your college career with a degree in a field of study that you enjoy. Study hard and party less. Try applying for a job in your field of interest before you graduate to find out what companies are seeking in an employee. Use that info to get involved/ gain experience. The earlier you start the process of actively pursuing career opportunities/internships you are interested in, the better.

Words of Advice to Students Pursue something you enjoy, instead of something that pays well. Be prepared to do a lot of work on your own, because the career fairs and job openings are competitive. Words of Advice to Students Attempt to network early-on in your college career. Seek more than one internship during college to gain experience necessary for the workforce. Become involved in University student organizations related to your major or field of study. Ask questions because that is the best way to learn and comprehend information. Make as many contacts with professors, other students, researchers, etc. to get the most out of you educational experience. Also try to participate in as many extracurricular activities that involve hands-on fieldwork - this will prepare you very well for the work environment and give you a variety of experiences. Network as much as possible. Get professional internships while in college and start to establish connections. When you graduate it's not your degree that gets you a job anymore, it's knowing people. When you're competing against hundreds of other applicants, you need an edge so try to have one! Participating in internships is a great way to understand more about the field you are in and to make IMPORTANT contacts for graduation. Fieldwork and hands-on experience is just as important as class time. Work with mentors and provided resources to choose a field of study that is right for you. Then get involved in the department and develop relationships with professors. A lot of programs are huge, so it is easy to stay in the shadows. Don't be afraid to start with an internship that only gives you a low food stipend, because the experience gained from it will most likely make you more employable and you'll get more opportunities from it than working a random, unrelated job. Persistence and volunteerism pays off. Get as many internships as possible before you graduate. Try to network as much as possible and make connections with classmates and professors. Work a variety of different jobs, and intern and volunteer with many organizations. This will help you figure out what you like, and you will gain valuable experience. Get internship experience in your chosen field while there is still time to change your major. Education is only the first step towards securing the job you want. Seek internships and extracurricular activities to ensure that you have a strong resume. If you are not confident in interviews, I would suggest practicing before the experience. Participate in student groups early. Start forming bonds with professors in your major - they will be great resources for internships and other opportunities. If your major allows you a lot of leeway, make sure that you design a course list

that is focused on what you want to do with your degree once you receive it. Network. Make yourself marketable. Gain skills and experience in your field of study in order to make yourself competitive. Don't wait until school is over to look for internships and jobs. Start planning in January/February for summer internships, since many of the best ones are filled early. Gain many professional experiences early and often to guide your education and career path.

Words of Advice to Students Internships and projects during college are what got me the job I have now. Outside experience is extremely important for obtaining a full-time position after you graduate! You need to get involved with the professors who do what you would like to do after graduation as early as possible. You should do a UROP related to your personal interests. Speak up in class. Start making professional connections long before graduation. Involve yourself in your chosen field while you are still in school; do not wait until you've graduated. Pursue a career that interests you personally, not one that will make your wallet fat or please your family. Take as many outdoor field session courses as possible. I got some of the most useful practical information from these courses. Try to get involved early, and always go to class. Networking is important. Get involved in professional societies. Get internship experience in your field. Figure out what you want to do. If you are not sure, don't be afraid to take some time off and work until you figure it out. Work while you are in school! Don't get into too much debt! Volunteer and do as many internships and study abroad experiences as possible! These were my best learning opportunities. Talk to teachers and with the Career Center to find out what it is you truly want to do. Try to make job connections through students and other projects at school. Do a research project if possible. Stay open-minded when considering jobs. You never know what you want to do until an opportunity hits you in the face and you give it a chance. Leave all doors open.

Words of Advice to Students It is really important to do an internship in the field that you plan to enter after graduation. I was able to do this, and it led to my current job, and also gave me a greater appreciation for the field. Don't give up! You will get a lot of no's but it only takes one yes. Join clubs that deal directly with your major rather than just interests. The professional clubs and competitions have been more beneficial to my professional life.

Words of Advice to Students Really pay attention in upper-level classes. There is more real-world application than you think there will be. Internships are key. The experience you gain through internships is directly related to the quality of job you will have upon graduation.

Words of Advice to Students Try to intern at as many places as possible to see as many different ways of doing things as possible. Choose a more generalized area of study rather than specific. At this time, having a specific degree will not allow you to enter as many fields as a more generalized and well-rounded degree. Do not rely solely on the Career Center. Search for jobs and especially internships on your own. Be aggressive with internships. The advice I would share is to start searching for positions early, and remember, "the early bird gets the worm." Go on informational interviews to learn more about positions and create contacts and network. Take the Career Planning class offered on the St. Paul Campus. Have someone at the Career Center critique your cover letters and resumes. Create relationships with your professors and advisor as they can be helpful with graduate school, job leads, and references. Join the alumni association - it is an investment that will pay off immensely through events, special savings, networking, and more. Finally, follow your passion and show that passion in interviews. Be proactive, not reactive! Don't limit yourself to what you think you would like to do. Life is full of surprises, so take any opportunity that comes your way. Don't work too many hours outside of classes.

Words of Advice to Students Take as many opportunities as you can to get exposure to the dietetics field; the internship is a lot more hands-on and definitely different than classroom learning. Research the field that you plan to enter after graduation, the academic program itself, and talk with other students that have been in the program for a while so you know what you are getting into. I would advise students to choose a field they're passionate about. Your career should be something that you are strongly interested in, which makes you go above and beyond to succeed in the "real world." Don't settle for something that doesn't "WOW" you. Consult faculty and advisors about which courses to take, requirements for professional schools, etc. Talk to upperclassmen as often as possible. Talk to professors about summer job opportunities - the best jobs I had were in research labs that allowed me to get to know my department and the faculty in the department better. They allowed me to feel like I was part of something truly special, a feeling I didn't really have until my junior year. Start looking for experience early! It doesn't necessarily have to be paid experience. I found I learned a lot from volunteer experiences that couldn’t be taught in the classroom. Good luck with your studies. Don’t let the big campus intimidate or overwhelm you. I'd recommend that students utilize all opportunities available at the U. Don't rush to graduate, figure out exactly what it is you want to do and focus on that. Get diverse experiences in the field you are interested in, and work hard in the program to get good grades. A good GPA significantly increases your chance of getting an internship when combined with good experiences outside of academic work.

Words of Advice to Students Take advantage of internship and volunteering opportunities. Job searching is frustrating- keep reviewing your resume and applying for jobs until you get an interview. Don't take it personally if you don't get a job offer. Work on campus even if the pay isn’t that great because it will help you build relationships with professors. After graduating, I would highly recommend working in the real-world for awhile before going back to grad school.
