2008 Outlook

Utah plans to spread it on thick this season with the return of several key players from the injured list. The spread offense, run so effectively by the Utes from 2003-05, gave way to a hybrid model, customized to available personnel, in the last two years. Barring major injuries, Utah’s playbook will again swell to the size it was in 2005, when Utah led the Mountain West Conference and finished 12th in the nation in total offense. With size, speed, experience and all-conference accolades at virtually every position, the outlook is bright for the 2008 Utes. Eight starters return, among them the quarterback, four linemen, two receivers and the running back. Only at center will there be a novice starter.

Quarterback A strong, accurate arm, excellent running ability and intelligence make Brian Johnson the prototypical spread option quarterback. Here’s how important Johnson is to Utah’s fortunes: Upon his return to the starting lineup from a shoulder injury suffered in the 2007 season-opener, Utah won eight of its last nine games and Johnson was named the Poinsettia Bowl Offensive MVP.

“Brian is a field general and the team leader,” says Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham. “He is a dual-threat quarterback who can hurt you with both his passing and running ability. Brian is also a great decision maker.” Despite his success a year ago, Johnson did not amass the numbers he posted as a second-team all-conference pick in 2005 when he led the MWC and finished fourth in the nation in total offense. (Johnson redshirted in 2006 to rehabilitate a knee injury). The statistical dip last year can be attributed to the elimination of his running plays to protect his shoulder. The limitation all but shelved the option game executed so effectively by Johnson, but successful off-season arthroscopic surgery should remedy that. “The true measure of a quarterback is his win-loss record and Brian Johnson was eight and one last season in games that he both started and finished. The shoulder is healed and we’re excited about Brian leading our team this fall,” says Whittingham. A youngster who got unexpected playing time when Johnson was injured will remain in the game plan even now that the senior starter is healthy. True sophomore Corbin Louks played in the final 10 games last season in pre-determined situations. Louks has blazing speed (he runs the 40 in 4.42 seconds) and he also threw two touchdown passes. Like Johnson, he is ideally suited for the spread offense. “While Brian is our starter, Corbin will have an expanded role this season,” says Whittingham. “He is a young talent who is mature beyond his years. Corbin handles himself like a senior.” Yet another athletic young quarterback joined the team in the spring. DeVonte Christopher was the 2007 Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year after passing for more than 3,000 yards and 44 touchdowns. The freshman is in a similar position that Louks was in a year ago in that a redshirt year makes sense unless circumstances dictate otherwise. “We have never had three quarterbacks with the athletic ability of Brian, Corbin and DeVonte on our team at one time,” says Whittingham, who remarks that sophomore Chad Manis is also a fine player. “Chad is a big, strong physical kid (6-5, 240) and it’s possible that he may make a position change this fall in order for us to find a way to get him on the field. He had a good spring and has made steady progress since coming here after a year of junior college ball,” says Whittingham of his third string QB.

Wide Receiver The return of senior Brent Casteel from the disabled list could have a similar impact to Johnson’s reappearance as the starting quarterback did last year. The versatile Casteel

is a tough, sure-handed receiver and a talented runner. He led Utah in all-purpose yards as a second-team all-conference pick in 2006 – compiling 600 receiving and 262 rushing yards and ranking second on the team in both categories. Casteel suffered a season-ending knee injury in the second game of 2007, but was back for spring ball. “Brent is a multi-talented, exciting player who has been very productive as a slot receiver. He is especially dangerous after the catch.” says Whittingham, who adds that Casteel may have “slipped under the radar” during his absence. Senior Bradon Godfrey, Utah’s other returning starter, ranked second on the team last year with 50 catches for 524 yards. Many of those receptions came where few care to tread. “Bradon is a fearless receiver who is willing to go over the middle and make the tough catch,” says Whittingham. Prepared to move into a starting role is 6-foot-3-inch senior Freddie Brown. “Freddie Brown was perhaps our most improved player this past spring and can present a match-up problem for defenses with his combination of size and speed. We are expecting a productive senior year out of him,” says Whittingham. Since Utah utilizes a three and even four-receiver set, depth is especially critical. Jereme Brooks and Elijah Wesson are in the mold of Casteel, in that they are equally adept at catching passes and running the ball. The 5-foot-7-inch Brooks rushed for three touchdowns and caught two touchdown passes as a true freshman.

Quarterback Brian Johnson led Utah to wins in eight of its last nine games in 2007 after returning from a shoulder injury.

Senior receiver Bradon Godfrey was second on the team with 50 receptions last year.

Wesson, a converted defensive back, averaged 6.4 yards per rush from the slot receiver position. “Jereme is a playmaker and a fierce competitor. He is a quality receiver that has big play capability when he has the ball in his hands,” says Whittingham. “Eli Wesson is a slash player capable of playing wide receiver as well as averaging over six yards per carry as a running back.” How this position rates overall may hinge on the availability of two star junior college prospects. David Reed and Aiona Key are highly-regarded recruits who both needed to finish several hours of academic coursework over the summer to be eligible for the coming season. “Our receiver corps could be one of the best in the conference if our two JC recruits (Reed and Key) are able to complete their course work over the summer,” says Whittingham.

Running Back Thanks in part to an injury early last year, Utah may have its best group of running backs ever this fall. The run game faltered when All-America junior college transfer Matt Asiata broke his leg in the 2007 season opener and a trio of backups jockeyed for the job. It took a couple of weeks for Darrell Mack to find his groove after pulling out of a planned redshirt year, but then he grabbed hold of the starting job and took off running. Mack finished as just the ninth 1,000-yard rusher in school history – racking up 1,204 yards on his way to second-team all-conference honors.

“We should have a good situation at running back,” says Whittingham of the now-healthy Asiata and Mack. “It will be nice to have a one-two punch in the backfield much like we did in 2004 with Marty Johnson and Quinton Ganther. Darrell was very productive for us last season, rushing for over 1,200 yards, but it should

be a competitive situation this fall with Matt challenging him for the starting job.” There’s more in the mix than the two marquee players. “Running back is one of our strongest positions in terms of talent and depth,” asserts Whittingham, pointing to backups like Ray Stowers, Eddie Wide and Sausan Shakerin. Like Mack (6-0, 220) and Asiata (5-11, 230), Stowers (6-0, 222) and Shakerin (6-2, 216) are big, powerful, downhill runners. “These guys are all physical, sledgehammer type runners capable of wearing out a defense,” says Whittingham. If the Utes want to try another look, there is the smaller, quicker Wide (5-10, 190), who played quite a bit as a true freshman last fall. “Eddie is an elusive runner who can also double as a wide receiver,” says Whittingham.

Shakerin, Mack and Wide all have redshirt years available. Shakerin, the 2007 Utah class 5A MVP, is a true freshman.

Offensive Line/Tight End Watch for the offensive line – where four of five starters return – to emerge as one of Utah’s strongest positions in 2008. First and foremost are all-conference candidates Zane Beadles and Robert Conley. Starters their entire careers at Utah, they are arguably the best at their respective positions in the league. “Zane Beadles did a great job of making the transition from guard to tackle last fall, which is not an easy thing to do, especially for a sophomore,” says Whittingham. “In just one season at tackle, he has become one of the best in the league. Zane has the unique blend of size, strength and agility that all of the great offensive linemen possess.” Conley, a senior right guard, rarely comes out of the lineup and has led the Utes in pancake blocks for the past two years. “Robert has been a solid performer for us throughout his entire career,” says Whittingham. “He is tough, dependable and consistent.” The Utes have the luxury of two starters at left guard, where senior Corey Seuili and sophomore Caleb Schlauderaff will fight for the job for the second year. Seiuli won the nod last fall before an ankle injury opened the door for Schlauderaff, who went on to have an outstanding rookie season. The coaches see Schlauderaff as an all-

conference prospect, but before he takes on the rest of the league, he must beat out the veteran Seiuli. The other returning starter is Dustin Hensel at right tackle. The 6-foot-7-inch, 307-pound senior “continues to steadily improve and played his best football as a Ute this past spring,” according to Whittingham. Center is the only position on the line that will be manned by an untested player. Sophomore Zane Taylor solidified the starting job in the spring after playing mostly on special teams in 2007. His backup, junior Tyler Williams, is another with mostly special teams experience. In addition to his returning starters and backups, Whittingham is enthused with his big recruiting class. “We feel we recruited an outstanding freshman class of offensive linemen in Derek Tuimauga, Sam Brenner, Sealver Siliga, Zach Davila and Tony Bergstrom. This is a talented group of players with a great deal of upside.” Also in the trenches are the tight ends, though they could see more of a playmaking role this year than in the past. “We use a lot of double tight personnel groups, particularly in short yardage situations. We’d like this position to have more of an impact for us and we’ve worked hard to upgrade it the last four years,” says Whittingham. Top returnees Brad Clifford and Colt Sampson will be challenged by transfer Dudley LaPorte, whose 30 receptions were the most in the nation last season by a junior college tight end.

Graduation took a big toll at linebacker and on the line, so the outlook for those positions is uncertain. That could be great news for Utah. A year ago, an almost completely renovated defensive secondary was pegged as an area of concern. The Utes went on to lead the nation in pass efficiency defense and finish 11th in pass defense (first in the MWC). The situation has flip-flopped this year as just two starting linemen and a single starting linebacker return, while in the secondary, starters and key backups are in abundance. The best news is that even in positions where Utah lacks returning starters there are players with game-day experience, as well as freshmen good enough to play right away.

Defensive Backs All but one of the contributing defensive backs from the nation’s leading pass defense returns and the Utes are especially deep at the corners. “We have three of the best corners in the conference in Brice McCain, R.J. Stanford and Sean Smith,” says Whittingham. “All three are exceptional in man-to-man coverage, which is the basis of what we do defensively. In addition, we believe they are one of the fastest groups of

corners in the nation.” Despite the strict NFL-style timing used by the Utes, McCain has been clocked in a 4.28-second 40 and is the team’s fastest player. Stanford (4.29) is hot on his heels and Smith (4.39), redshirt freshman Brad Burton (4.43), along with speedy incoming JC transfer Lamar Chapman, can also cover a lot of ground fast. McCain, second-team all-conference as a junior last year, led the Utes in pass breakups with 11. Stanford, the starting nickel back, also plays a lot of corner. Smith’s physical attributes are tough to beat. “Sean

solves a lot of match-up problems for us with opposing receivers given his great size (6-3), long arms and speed,” says Whittingham. Junior Justin Jones (4.51 40) and junior college transfer Damilyn Tanner are also contenders at corner, leading Whittingham to say, “most years we are hard pressed to find solid fourth and fifth corners, but it appears we may have that luxury this season.” Speed is the creed of the safeties as well. At free safety, junior Robert Johnson (4.52 40) will start for a second year. Last year, as a juco transfer, Johnson emerged as one of the nation’s most talented and exciting safeties. Look for him to improve on his honorable mention all-conference accolades after successful off-season surgery to repair the dislocated shoulder that impacted almost his entire 2007 season. In the game prior to his injury, Johnson was named the Bronco Nagurski National Defensive Player of Week for his role in Utah’s upset victory over No. 11 UCLA. Strong safety is the only position in the defensive backfield hit by graduation and the loss was a big one. Steve Tate, a first-team all-conference selection, was Utah’s leading tackler in 2006 and 2007. There may be a Tate lying in wait, however. Poinsettia Bowl Defensive MVP Joe Dale delivered a career-high 12 tackles against Navy in the final game of the season and his heroics included a game-clinching interception with under a minute remaining in Utah’s 35-32 win. He’ll need to bat down a couple of teammates to

get the job full-time as both Deshawn Richard and RJ Rice have their sights set on it too. “The competition at strong safety is by no means settled,” says Whittingham. “Joe is tough in the box and has that linebacker mentality that a strong safety needs. Deshawn, along with Robert Johnson, is one of our two fastest safeties and showed dramatic improvement this past spring. RJ is a tough, gritty competitor who finds a way to make plays.” Special teams star Terrell Cole continues to improve and could compete for playing time as well.

Defensive Line Koa Misi and Paul Kruger joined the starting lineup in the third game of 2007 when the coaches determined their ability outweighed their inexperience. The move paid off. Misi, a sophomore juco transfer, and Kruger, a redshirt freshman coming off a two-year church mission, finished as the top tacklers on the line, and as Utah’s third and fourth leading tacklers overall. Before they had played a down for Utah, Whittingham identified both Kruger and Misi as future first-team all-conference players. The all-conference honors could come as early as this season. Kruger has a leg up after making several freshman All-America teams a year ago and earning honorable mention all-MWC accolades. Even while playing out of position, Misi put up impressive numbers as an undersized tackle, recording 67 stops and eight tackles for loss. Watch for those numbers to increase now that he is manning the left end.

“We feel we have the best set of defensive ends in the conference in Koa and Paul,” says Whittingham. “Koa showed his versatility playing both inside and outside last year but his natural position is end. He and Paul are both great pass rushers who have size, strength and speed.” The picture is murkier inside where two starters must be replaced due to Misi’s move outside and the graduation of second-team all-conference tackle Gabe Long. “We have talent inside but very little experience,” admits Whittingham. “Lei Talamaivao saw quality time as a true freshman and we are counting on him to be a major contributor for us this year. He had a great off-season and possesses all the necessary tools to become a very good defensive tackle.” Senior Greg Newman, who like Misi can play both end and tackle, is Talamaivao’s top competition for the starting job at tackle. At nose tackle, junior Kenape Eliapo hopes to move up after playing as a backup for two years. He’ll be pushed by true freshman Dave Kruger – a coveted recruit who has the same kind of physical profile and talent as his brother Paul. “Dave enters our program highly touted and we anticipate him making an impact right away,” says Whittingham. “Though he still needs to add some weight to his frame, our need at defensive tackle suggests that is where he’ll play.”

Linebackers There are more open jobs here than at any position and not a senior to be found, yet Whittingham sees only positives. “We lost three fifth-year seniors to graduation which will give this position a new look for us this season. This is without question the fastest, most athletic group of linebackers we have had here in years. We feel good about the talent level at this position and they should be a productive group for us,” he says. Case in point is junior rover Stevenson Sylvester – the only returning starter. Sylvester broke into the linebacker rotation as a true freshman and is positioned for all-conference honors after an 86-tackle sophomore season (second-best on the team) that included 10 tackles for loss. Even more impressive is that he did most of his work in the last seven games and was voted to the honorable mention all-MWC team despite not starting until midseason. “Stevenson is a rangy, athletic playmaker as well as being a team leader,” says Whittingham. “He has added size and strength to his frame (6-2, 224) this off-season due to his hard work in the weight room.” While the jury is out on the rest of the ’backers, there seems to be plenty of talent in the program. Mike Wright, a “smart, instinctive middle linebacker,” according to Whittingham, played well as a frequently used backup last season and will slide into the starter’s seat there. True sophomore Nai Fotu takes over at stud linebacker after making some huge plays in a cameo role last year. Fotu shifted from defensive end to linebacker when injuries struck and was

handed his own small package of plays. “We saw flashes of Nai’s capabilities last year as a part time player for us. This season he’ll have the opportunity to do it full time,” says Whittingham. There’s not much drop off behind the starters where redshirt freshmen Mo Neal and Chaz Walker are budding stars. “Mo Neal will make some noise. He has all of the physical tools to become an excellent inside linebacker. All he lacks is experience” says Whittingham. “Chaz Walker made a seamless transition from safety to outside linebacker in the spring and shows a great deal of promise.” In addition, former walk-on kicker Kepa Gaison played some at linebacker last year with good results and sophomore Matt Martinez is recovered from a knee injury.

Senior Louie Sakoda, the nation’s best combination punter and kicker, is possibly unrivaled at both positions even when compared to individual specialists. A first-team All-America punter as a junior last year (Football Writers Association of America, CBSSports.com), Sakoda also made a number of All-America teams as a place kicker. The MWC Special Teams Player of the Year for the past two years, Sakoda has virtually no weakness. He has distance, accuracy, hang time and placement skills. He is mentally tough and

cool under pressure. He is so athletic that he presents a threat to run or throw the ball when lined up for punts or field goals. “Louie Sakoda has been a tremendous weapon for our football team the past three seasons,” says Whittingham. “In our opinion, he is the best dual-threat kicker in the country and his athleticism allows us the opportunity to implement a variety of fakes in the kicking game. In addition, Louie handles pressure situations very well.” A leading candidate for both the Ray Guy and Lou Groza awards, Sakoda was the only dual punter/kicker to place in the top five in the nation in both punting

average (44.3) and field goal percentage (.864). He ranked first in the MWC and 11th in the nation in yards per punt, despite sacrificing distance at times for strategic defensive position. Nearly 40 percent of Sakoda’s punts (28-of-73) were downed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line, and he placed six punts inside the 5-yard line. As a place kicker, Sakoda was perfect inside 40 yards (9-of-9) and he ranked third in the nation in made field goals from beyond 40 yards (10-of-13). He made 19-of-22 total field goal attempts, with his only misses coming from 45, 48 and 51 yards. The rest of the kick team has Ben Vroman kicking off, Clint Mower snapping and Bradon Godfrey holding for the second year. “Ben is one of the better kickoff guys in the country in terms of leg strength, hang time and touchbacks,” says Whittingham, who also wants

some attention directed to Mower. “The value of a great snapper cannot be overemphasized. Clint has been very dependable the last couple of years, handling both the long and short snap duties.” The return game is not nearly as settled, admits Whittingham. “We’ll have to wait and see who performs well in fall camp before we name the starters.” Speedy Jereme Brooks is the front runner for both punt and kick returns. An exciting player with the ball in his hands, Brooks stepped into the kick return job relatively late last year and averaged 22.2 yards per return. Other top candidates include Brent Casteel and Brandon Burton.
