In a world in which communication is often reduced to sound bites and Twitter, the theater continues to do what

it has always done best: remind us of our history while imagining our future; journey to distant cultures while

celebrating our own community; transform our lives while exploring our humanity. Goodman Theatre’s 2008/2009

Season had something for everyone: familiar songs presented in bold new contexts, an array of theatrical modes

and styles, and glimpses into the tangled webs of human societies and emotions. The extraordinary range of

themes, cultures and motifs that enlivened this season was a vivid example of the Goodman’s far-reaching mission

and artistic vision.

Our Albert Theatre season opened with the Goodman debut of a musical theater master: director/choreographer

Tommy Tune, whose dazzling production of Rick Elice and Marshall Brickman’s new musical Turn of the Century

featured Jeff Daniels, Rachel York and some of Tin Pan Alley’s most celebrated tunes. The second production in the Albert was the 31st

annual production of A Christmas Carol, featuring Larry Yando’s indelible Scrooge under the peerless direction of William Brown. In Janu-

ary we began one of our most ambitious projects to date: an investigation of the early works of Eugene O’Neill, the greatest of American

playwrights, interpreted by some of today’s most distinctive directors. This “Global Exploration” began with my own re-investigation of

Desire Under the Elms, featuring towering performances by Carla Gugino, Pablo Schreiber and my longtime colleague Brian Dennehy. Other

featured productions in our O’Neill retrospective included the Wooster Group’s daring The Emperor Jones; a trio of O’Neill’s early sea plays

imaginatively interpreted by Brazil’s Companhia Triptal; Toneelgroep Amsterdam’s stunning take on Mourning Becomes Electra; and shows

by two outstanding local companies, The Hypocrites (The Hairy Ape) and the Neo-Futurists (Strange Interlude).

In the spring, Artistic Associate Regina Taylor premiered Magnolia, an emotionally resonant view of changing racial and social politics in

1960s Atlanta, directed by Tony Award winner Anna D. Shapiro. Next, guest director Charles Newell brought Tom Stoppard’s sprawling

cross-generational (and cross-cultural) Rock ’n’ Roll to vibrant life. And finally in the Albert, José Rivera’s bittersweet Boleros for the

Disenchanted, sensitively staged by Resident Artistic Associate Henry Godinez, depicted a couple’s struggle to hold onto love in the face

of decades of challenges.

The Owen Season, entitled Strong Voices, Strong Women, featured three new works written and directed by women. MacArthur Foundation

Fellowship winner Lynn Nottage opened the season with her Goodman-commissioned play Ruined, a harrowing tale of courage and survival

during the divisive battles that still plague the Democratic Republic of Congo. Co-produced with New York’s Manhattan Theatre Club under the

direction of Kate Whoriskey, Ruined went on to be the most honored American play of the season, eventually winning the coveted Pulitzer Prize

for Drama. Naomi Iizuka’s Ghostwritten was next, commissioned by the Goodman under the auspices of a Joyce Foundation Award. Directed

by Lisa Portes, Iizuka’s play explored the magical connection between a mysterious Vietnamese woman and an American mother and daugh-

ter. Finally, Rebecca Gilman’s sharp-edged The Crowd You’re In With, directed by Wendy C. Goldberg, delved into the pitfalls of parenthood.

The success of the Goodman cannot exist without the steadfast efforts of those behind the scenes: the artists, craftspeople, staff and support-

ers whose collaborative efforts truly create a sense of community within the theater walls. Roche Schulfer, my business partner of more than

two decades, passionately championed the artistic vision of Goodman Theatre while working tirelessly with General Manager Peter Calibraro

to secure our financial present and future. And the talents of our Artistic Collective—led by Associate Producer Steve Scott, along with Brian

Dennehy, Frank Galati, Henry Godinez, Chuck Smith, Regina Taylor and Mary Zimmerman—never cease to inspire me.

I sincerely thank each of you for your loyalty and support of our work. Together, we will continue to fulfill the Goodman’s overall mission: to

explore the human experience through the realm of the theater.

During the 2008/2009 Season we continued to fulfill our commitment to producing dynamic productions that

promote creativity, collaboration, artistic risk-taking, freedom of expression and cultural diversity. With four world-

premiere plays; the U.S. premieres of four plays produced in foreign countries; exciting partnerships between the

Goodman and other theater companies, both local and national; and the continued support and expansion of

diversity initiatives on our stages and in our programming, the Goodman proved once again that we are dedicated

to our core values of quality, diversity and community.

Highlights from our 2008/2009 Season include:

• We became the first cultural institution to receive the Joyce Award twice, securing a $50,000 grant to support a new play by Latin

American playwright Quiara Alegría Hudes.

• We were awarded the Actors Equity Association’s “Spirit Recognition Award,” honoring the fact that one-third of our productions

throughout the past 20 years have featured artists of color.

• We presented Strong Women, Strong Voices, an entire season of works written and directed by women in the Owen Theatre.

• We expanded our international reach and reputation through our global exploration of Eugene O’Neill, which featured theater companies

from three countries and brought an audience of more than 50,000 (90% of capacity) to the theater.

• Inspired by the invaluable feedback of our patrons, we launched the new season companion site ExploreTheGoodman.org, offering an

in-depth and behind-the-scenes look at our season.

• We created a new program called “Dramatic Integration: Using Theater to Teach Everything” to help teachers in the city learn how theater

can be used more effectively to teach all subjects; we presented a workshop of this program at the Chicago Teachers Union Conference.

• We received a $275,000 gift from the Shubert Foundation. This is the largest annual general operating support grant in our history.

This is just a sampling of the Goodman’s remarkable accomplishments this season—a testimony to the hard work of the artistic and adminis-

trative staff and the dedication, generosity and loyalty of our donors and patrons.

I would especially like to thank Shawn Donnelley, who completed her second and final year as Chairman this season. Her leadership steered

us through one of the toughest economic times in recent history. Her passion and commitment to the Goodman are infinite and abiding and

I look forward to working with her for many years to come. We have the hardest working Board of Trustees and Women’s Board in Chicago,

and they continue to amaze me with the amount of time and effort they spend to ensure the Goodman’s future.

As always, it was a pleasure working with Bob Falls this season. I am grateful for his artistic vision, as well as the work of each of the

supremely talented members of our Artistic Collective. I am also fortunate to have an unparalleled administrative team of consummate

professionals who are the foundation of our continued success: General Manager Peter Calibraro, Associate Producer Steve Scott, Director of

It has been a great delight to serve as Chairman of Goodman Theatre for the last two seasons, and I am so very

proud to share the 2008/2009 Annual Report with you. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Robert Falls and

Executive Director Roche Schulfer, Goodman Theatre presented an outstanding season of acclaimed productions

and educational programs that touched the lives of so many people in our community. There is simply no other

theater that can do what the Goodman does each season.

Throughout its 83-year history, the Goodman has been a leader in the arts community in Chicago and the Ameri-

can theater. This season, the Goodman extended its reach by showcasing some of the most outstanding companies

and stories from around the world. From the international exploration of master playwright Eugene O’Neill to Lynn

Nottage’s Goodman-commissioned 2009 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, Ruined, we brought the world to Chicago

and Chicago to the international community. Thank you for being a part of this journey.

Our continued success depends on the generosity and enthusiasm of those who support us. I would like to thank my fellow trustees, the

Women’s Board and the Scenemakers Council for their valuable contribution of time and resources, which has ensured the Goodman’s

success. I am especially grateful for the hard work of President Richard Weisberg and Vice Chairmen Vicki Hood and Patricia Cox, who will

The Goodman’s 2008/2009 Season included three successful events co-hosted by Goodman Theatre Women’s

Board. In all, the Women’s Board raised more than $1.4 million for the theater. Additionally, the Women’s Board

was proud to use an allocation of these funds to sponsor Tom Stoppard’s Rock ’n’ Roll.

On September 26, we kicked off the 2008/2009 Season with a season-opening benefit. The evening began with a re-

ception and dinner at The Standard Club and ended with a performance at the Goodman of Turn of the Century, a new

musical starring Jeff Daniels and Rachel York and directed by nine-time Tony Award-winning legend Tommy Tune. I wish

to extend special thanks to Co-Chairs Women’s Board member Cynthia E. Levin, Trustee Neal S. Zucker and Scenemak-

ers Council member Cheryl McPhilimy for their extraordinary leadership on this wonderful event; and Corporate Benefit

Our annual “Fame Fantasy Food Adventure” Auction, held on February 2 at The Casino, raised more than $300,000 for the Goodman for the

third year in a row. I extend a sincere thank you to Co-Chairs Swati Mehta and Susan V. Downing, Underwriting Chair Stacy Devine, Auction-

eers Trustees Leslie Hindman and Harold Ramis and the rest of the Auction committee for their hard work and dedication.

The Goodman’s annual Gala, our signature event of the season, was held this year on May 30 at The Fairmont Chicago. More than 600

people attended the event, which featured an entertaining performance by Tony- and Emmy Award-winning actor Mandy Patinkin. I would

like to acknowledge some of the many people responsible for the success of this amazing evening, particularly Co-Chairs Life Trustee Sondra

A. Healy and Women’s Board member Cynthia K. Scholl, and Corporate Chair Trustee Keith Green. Thanks to their leadership and the tireless

Nine-time Tony Award winner and National Medal of the Arts recipient Tommy Tune directed

the world premiere of Turn of the Century, from the writers of the Tony Award-winning Jersey

Boys, Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. In this romantic musical comedy, Dixie Wilson’s a

singer who can’t catch a break—with a gig or a guy. Billy Clark’s a piano player who knows the

songs and loves the ladies. The friction between them is immediate; so is the chemistry. At the

stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve 1999, the impossible happens—and together, Billy and

Dixie steal the songs that make the whole world sing, becoming the superstars they’ve always

dreamed of being, at the Turn of the Century.

Goodman Theatre’s A Christmas Carol has delighted Chicago audiences since the very first

production 31 years ago when the Chicago Tribune raved: “magic took over the show.” Charles

Dickens’ classic story, the exceptional actors and the miraculous stagecraft have made A

Christmas Carol a beloved Chicago tradition. Every year, audiences look forward to the “Bah

Humbugs,” the arrival of the ghosts, the music and dancing and Scrooge’s joyful discovery of

life and love.

DESIRE UNDER THE ELMSBY EUGENE O’NEILLDIRECTED BY ROBERT FALLSJANUARY 17 – FEBRUARY 22, 2009

Sparked by the dark hollows and brilliant imaginings of his subconscious, master playwright

Eugene O’Neill conceived Desire Under the Elms as he slept one night, resulting in a work with

the powerful emotional pitch of a fever dream. Elder Ephraim Cabot returns to his remote New

England farm with his third wife—the young, alluring, headstrong Abbie—setting his three dis-

approving grown sons on an emotional rollercoaster and bitter fight for their inheritance. When

Ephraim’s youngest son Eben sets his sights on Abbie, the resulting tempest brings tragic

consequences. First produced in 1924, Desire Under the Elms hauntingly mingles love and

loathing, and has been praised for its “poetry and terrible beauty” (The New York Times).

In A Global Exploration: Eugene O’Neill in the 21st Century, the Goodman hosted some of

the best theater companies from around the world in an exploration of O’Neill plays curated

by Artistic Director Robert Falls. The Exploration included more than 100 artists from six

theater companies; each brought its own contemporary, inventive interpretation of O’Neill’s

In Atlanta in 1963, as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. inspires Atlanta’s black citizens to fight

passionately for their civil rights, the new mayor erects “The Payton Wall” to restrict where

they can live. Amid these churning social currents, Magnolia Estate faces foreclosure, pitting

the sensual, free-spirited heiress Lily Forrest against Thomas, a strong-willed businessman who

lays claim to the estate where his ancestors were slaves.

ing and passionate play spans two countries, three generations and 22 turbulent years, at the

about the everyday reality of marriage and the often undignified struggle to hold on to love in

MacArthur Foundation Fellowship winner Lynn Nottage returned to Chicago with her

Goodman commission, Ruined, which the theater workshopped and produced as part of

the 2007 New Stages Series. Set in the present-day Democratic Republic of the Congo,

Ruined centers around Mama Nadi, a savvy businesswoman who, in the midst of a complex

civil war, protects and profits from the women whose bodies have become a battleground.
