Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan Tennis. I am con-fident that Coach Pablo Montana and the players will make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful cam-pus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams have won statewide and regional titles and won our first Pennsylvania State Athletic Con-ference’s (PSAC) Dixon Trophy for 2008-09. The Dixon Tro-phy is emblematic of athletic supremacy the PSAC — the premier Division II athletic conference in America today. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for the magnificent accomplishment.

I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the Fall 2009 academic semester, a total of 201 California Univer-sity of Pennsylvania student-athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the seventh-straight semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natalie Student Union and in various sport venues, such as the new tennis complex. Tennis and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were athletes have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field from their coaches, their team-mates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2010 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.

California University of Pennsylvania stu-dent-athletes posted a banner year in athlet-ic competition during the 2008-09 season, six PSAC West titles, four PSAC crowns and four NCAA regional trophies with eight team and 15 individual appearances in NCAA post-sea-son play. The success has continued through the fall 2009 semester as the Vulcans claimed three NCAA Regional titles. In addition to athletic prowess, the Vulcans also excelled in the classroom. A total of 201 Cal U student athletes, representing all sports (fall, winter & spring), were named to the Fall 2009 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the seventh-straight semester, the Cal U ath-letic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. In the fall, women’s golf posted the highest team GPA at 3.58 and featured all eight players on the Honor Roll. On the men’s side, the baseball team posted top GPA of the seven sports at 3.18 with 21 players holding a 3.00 GPA or better. In terms of pure numbers during the fall, women’s track & field led all 16 sports with 39 representatives on the Honor Roll, followed by football (24) and baseball. Women’s golf led all programs with 100 percent of its team on the Honor Roll, followed by women’s cross country (87 percent; 13-of-15) and softball (85 percent; 17-of-20). Cal U also boasted 22 student-athletes that registered a perfect 4.0 GPA during the Fall 2009 semester. Last year, Cal U featured nine ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selections, high-lighted by the school’s first Academic All-American since 2006. To be eligible for the academ-ic all-district honor, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.20 GPA or higher, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games as a starter or an important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials.

Last year, Helena VanEysendeyk became thefirst player in program history to be selected to the

CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.

Montana, the 2007 Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year, has posted a combined dual record of 144-42 overall (.774) to become the winningest coach in program history. The Vulcans have earned a berth in the NCAA Championship in six of the last seven seasons, including two quarterfinal appearances. Additionally, Montana has coached three All-Americans in the last three years in Yumi Matsuto, Inga Chilingaryan and Helena VanEysendeyk. Last season marked capped one of Montana’s finest seasons with the Vulcans making an appearance in NCAA Quarterfinals, losing to the eventual-national champion. Cal U finished the season with a 23-3 overall record, including a 7-2 mark against nationally-ranked opponents, and were ranked No. 15 nationally in final ITA rankings. Cal U also won its third-straight regional championship with wins against West Virginia State and Charleston (W.Va.) in the NCAA Tournament. Behind four All-PSAC West performers last season, the Vulcans earned their fifth-straight PSAC West title and third-straight PSAC Team Championship. In 2007-08, Chilingaryan and VanEysendeyk earned doubles All-America status by finishing No. 2 in the ITA doubles ranking after posting a 20-1 record. The pair also received All-America laurels in singles action with VanEysendeyk finishing No. 4 in the ITA rankings.

In 2007, the Vulcans advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time in program history. For his effort in guiding Cal U to a school-best 28-2 record and a No. 6 ranking by the ITA, Montana received Wilson/ITA National and Regional Coach of the Year accolades. Under his coaching, the Vulcans featured their first All-American doubles team with Chilingaryan and Matsuto. Montana guided Cal U to the NCAA Championships in his first season with the program in 2003 with a 12-9 overall record. Over the next three seasons, the Vulcans posted at least 17 victories with two NCAA Tournament post-season appearances. In addition to the success on the court, Montana has guided the program into one of the elite programs in the classroom. In each of the last six seasons, the Vulcans have earned ITA All-Academic honors with 14 different players receiving ITA Scholar-Athlete status. Also a tennis standout in college, Montana was a two-time All-American at Tennessee (1993-96). He was a three-time All-Southeastern Conference (SEC)

HEAD COACHselection, earning first-team honors in both singles and doubles play in 1996. Montana and doubles partner Chris Mahony were the No. 4 ranked collegiate doubles team in the country at the end of his junior year, posting 23 victories. Montana and Mahony rank second in Volunteers’ history with 75 career doubles wins. After his collegiate career was finished, he served as a national coach with

the United States Tennis Association in 1999. In his first college coaching experience, Montana served as the assistant coach with Vanderbilt of the SEC for three seasons. While with the Commodores, he helped coach Andrew Nisker, who in 2000 became the first Vanderbilt player to win an SEC Championship since 1982. During Montana’s tenure at Vanderbilt, the Commodores were ranked as high as No. 28 in 1999, the highest mark in the history of the program to that point. A native of Miami, Montana completed his bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Regents College (N.Y.) in 1998. He then earned his master’s

degree from Cal U in geography and regional planning in 2004. Montana and his wife Karen reside in Canonsburg, Pa., with their two children, Alexis and Silas.

2007 • 2008 • 2009 PSAC CHAMPIONS

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to

provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, two assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.
