SEASON OUTLOOK In cross coun-try, more so even than other sports, continu-ally growing as an athlete and getting better each year is crucial to the growth and suc-cess of the pro-

gram. The 2010 edition of the California Univer-sity of Pennsylvania men’s and women’s cross country teams hope to build upon last year’s growth and make an impact at the Pennsyl-vania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships. Head coach Daniel Caulfield returns a group that has experience in returners and potential in newcomers. Erin Kling returns to lead the wom-en after bursting on to the scene last year in win-ning PSAC Freshman of the Year honors and fin-ishing as the top freshman at the regional meet. “We’re expecting her to be a top performer

this year at the regional with a chance to go to nationals,” said Caulfield. Kling was

impressive in 2009, finishing first at Penn

State Behrend and second at both the

Cal U and the Saint Vincent Invitationals.

Joining Kling as a top returner

is Brittney Kanach, a ju-nior who has overcome

a number of injuries in her career after finishing 49th in the region as a freshman in 2007. “Brittney is healthy and we expect big things out of her this year,” said Caulfield. Rounding out the top five return-ers from 2009 are seniors Laurie Hall and Beth-any Stone and sophomore Carly Youngeberg. “All three had solid years last season which they will improve on,” believes Caulfield. Also returning to the mix in 2010 is Erika Cof-fey, a sophomore that burst on to the scene as a freshman in 2008 in being the top finisher for the Vulcans at the Cal U Invitational before miss-ing the rest of the year and all of 2009 recover-ing from injury. Caulfield also expects big things from three freshmen high school all-state quali-fiers: Melanie Barr, Julia Kubica and Liz Larson. As a whole, the women’s team had a suc-cessful 2009 campaign with one first-place and three second-place finishes in their first four meets and strong 13th place finishes at both the PSAC and Atlantic Regional championships, the programs best finish in two decades.

The Cal U men’s cross country team returns four top runners to go along with a large fresh-man class. Tony Russo leads the men’s team as the only senior on the roster and will be looked upon to provide leadership for the young ros-ter. Junior Tim Lahmers (a PSAC Track Qualifier in the 5K) and a pair of sophomores were also top runners in 2009, Chris Poss and Christopher Werner. Werner finished 11th in the conference as a true freshman last season earning him all-PSAC honors. Joining the returners from last season are ju-nior Cory Steinhagen, a junior college trans-fer who was a JUCO National Qualifier, and a trio of freshmen in Noah Carroll, Cameron Coffey and Aaron Dinzeo. Carroll and Coffey were state qualifiers in high school while Dinzeo earned all-state recognition in Ohio. Freshman Savantuay Boyette figures to contribute in 2010 after being a three-time county champion in New York. This year’s Cal U Invitational has been re-named the Marty Uher California (Pa.) Invita-tional to honor the former professor and coach at Cal U. Uher was responsible for starting the track & field programs as well as the women’s cross country team during his tenure at the Uni-versity. Uher also coached Brian Ferrari, who was a combined three-time NCAA National Champion and five-time NCAA All-American. For the first time the Invitational will be held at the brand new cross country course that has been completed at Roadman Park. The new course will host the Marty Uher Invitational in early September and then in early November, the PSAC will converge on Roadman Park for the PSAC Championships hosted by Cal U for the first time since 1992. If the returners can continue to improve, and the newcomers are able to successfully adapt to running on the college level, the Vulcan cross

country program will grow even more in 2010.

Academic Team. In 2008, Clark became the program’s first-ever Academic All-American. Caulfield joined Cal U after serving as the head men’s and women’s track & field and cross country coach at Clarion. A native of Roscommon, Ireland, he started coaching at his alma mater and Division II perennial powerhouse Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. While serving as a coach with the Grizzlies, Adams State won four NCAA women’s cross country national championships (1998, 1999, 2003 and 2004) and two NCAA men’s titles (1998 and 2003). During his collegiate career, he was a 10-time All-American and two-time NAIA National Champion. He helped lead the Grizzlies’ cross country program to National Championships in 1993 and 1994 after placing in the top five during both championship races. Caulfield also was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) record holder in the 800 and 1500-meter runs. He was named to the RMAC All-Time Men’s Cross Country Team. Caulfield earned his bachelor’s degree from ASC in Exercise Physiology and in late 1996 returned to Ireland to work in the exercise physiology department of the Blackrock Clinic, one of the country’s most established healthcare facilities. He returned to ASC in 1998 to complete his master’s degree and coached there until December 2004. The Irish native also holds the national indoor record in the 800 meters. Caulfield was a two-time European Cup champion in the 800-meter run and 1500-meter run. In 2001, he was among the top 50 in the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World rankings. Caulfield was a two-time runner-up at the Millrose Games.

Daniel Caulfield enters his fifth season as the head coach for the men’s and women’s cross country programs at California University of Pennsylvania. In addition to his work with the cross country teams, he serves as an assistant coach with the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field teams. Last season, Caulfield coached two of the top freshmen in the conference in Erin Kling and Christopher Werner. Kling became the first Cal U women’s runner to earn All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) honors since 1984 and was named the PSAC Freshman of the Year. In his short time with the Vulcans, he has coached athletes to five combined conference titles in cross country and track & field. He also mentored NCAA All-American and Olympic-Trials qualifier Christopher Clark. In 2008, Clark posted one of the most impressive seasons by a runner in program history, earning U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Atlantic Region and PSAC Men’s Athlete of the Year laurels. In addition to their improvement on the course, Caulfield’s teams are also excelling in the classroom. Last year, both the men’s and women’s team were named a USTFCCCA All-

A former All-American distance runner Jackie (Pacentrilli) Caulfield enters her fifth season with the Vulcan cross country programs in 2010. Caulfield worked with 20-plus NCAA Division II individual national champions, nearly 100 All-Americans and three NCAA Championship teams at Division II perennial powerhouse Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. She received her bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology with Cum Laude honors from Adams State before completing her master’s degree in health and physical education. Caulfield helped the Grizzlies to three-straight NCAA Division II Cross Country Championship from 1997 to 1999.

During her collegiate career, she earned All-America honors in the 5,000 and 10,000-meter runs. As a senior in 2002, she finished third at the National Indoor Track & Field Championships in the 5,000 meters. She also was a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic C o n f e r e n c e (RMAC) All-Academic teams throughout her career.

Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Roger Kingdom enters his seventh year working with cross country and track & field programs at California University of Pennsylvania. Kingdom,

the former world and American record holder in the 110-meter hurdles, serves as the Director of the Track & Field and Cross Country programs at Cal U. K i n g d o m is a five-time National United States Champion (1985, 1988-90 and

1995) and one of only two runners to ever win consecutive Olympic titles in the 110 hurdles (1984, 1988). A native of Georgia, he joined the Cal U athletic program in 2004 before being named interim head track & field coach in March of the following year. Shortly thereafter, he accepted the director position for both the cross country and track & field programs. Kingdom is a 2002 graduate from the University of Pittsburgh and played for the Panthers’ football team in the 1980s before concentrating his efforts on his track & field career. He set the world record of 12.92 seconds in the 110 hurdles in Zurich, Switzerland in 1989. Kingdom retired from active competition in 1998.

2009 REVIEW

The California University of Pennsylvania cross country program made strides during the 2009 season, as the women’s team posted its best finish at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships in the last two decades. Meanwhile, the men’s team finished ninth at the event despite the loss of an All-American from last season. The Vulcan women’s team featured the largest roster in recent years, nearly doubling its size from 2008. Cal U also posted a strong showing at the NCAA Regional Championships, finishing 13th in the team standings after placing 20th the previous year. Newcomer Erin Kling was selected the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Freshman of the Year after being the top finisher among all freshmen competing at both the PSAC Championships and NCAA Regional Championships. She was the top runner for the Vulcans in all five races in which she competed during the 2009 season.

Cal U captured its first invitational title in over 20 years by winning the Penn State Behrend Invitational behind an individual title by Kling and four top-10 finishes. In addition to the title, the Vulcans finished second in three other events with Jordan Atha winning the Marietta Invitational. On the men’s side, the Vulcans placed eighth at the PSAC Championships and ninth at the NCAA Atlantic Regional, both finishes equal their performances in 2008 despite losing Olympic Track-qualifier Christopher Clark. Graduate student Eric Reger won the individual title and helped the Vulcans win the team crown at Marietta. He finished the year with four finishes in the top three overall in 2009. F r e s h m a n Christopher Werner was the top newcomer for Cal U, posting team-best finishes in each of the last three races. He became the third different men’s runner to earn All-PSAC honors in the last three season after finishing 11th overall at the 2009 PSAC Championships. Both the men’s and women’s programs were named USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams and featured a combined five individual USTFCCCA All-Academic selections.

2009 REVIEWACADEMICS Cal U student-athletes posted a banner year in athletic competition during the 2009-10 season, five PSAC West titles, four PSAC crowns and two NCAA regional trophies with nine team and 14 individual appearances in NCAA post-season play. The success continued as Cal U finished second in the final standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. In addition to athletic prowess, the Vulcans also excelled in the classroom. A total of 205 Cal U student athletes, representing all sports (fall, winter & spring), were named to the Spring 2010 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the eighth-straight semester, Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Cal U also featured 16 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selections highlighted by four Academic All-Americans. To be eligible for the academic all-district honor, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.20 GPA or higher, reached sophomore athletics and academic standing at their institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games as a starter or an important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. In addition, a combined 141 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports were named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year. To be eligible for the academic honor, student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) while competing in an intercollegiate varsity sport. Cal U ranked sixth among the 16-member conference with 141 scholar-athletes. The men’s soccer team had seven players earning PSAC Scholar-Athlete status.

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 238 individual title winners.

While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at

the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 125,000 students and claim over 709,000 alumni, including 482,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate, assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan cross country. I am confident that Coach Dan Caulfield, his staff and the players will continue to build upon the cross country tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished with an impressive No. 2 national ranking in the final

standings of the 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. This second place-finish is the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. The Vulcans are the only PSAC school to break into the top five of the standings and the only school to post three-straight Top 10 finishes. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2009-10 academic year, a total of 205 Cal U student athletes, were named to the Spring 2010 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the eighth-consecutive semester, Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 141 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2009-10 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration.

The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Roadman Park. Cross Country and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2010 season and that you will support all of these young athletes

enthusiastically.
