A SENATE RESOLUTION

JOINING PEOPLE FROM ACROSS THE NATION IN EXPRESSING THE COLLECTIVE JOY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA UPON THE SUCCESSFUL EMERGENCY LANDING OF U.S. AIRWAYS FLIGHT 1549 IN THE HUDSON RIVER ON JANUARY 15, 2009.

Whereas, less than two minutes after taking off, U.S. Airways Flight 1549, departing from New York’s LaGuardia Airport and heading to Charlotte, N.C., encountered a bird strike, losing power from both jet engines; and

Whereas, after attempting to land the plane at nearby Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, Captain Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles managed to control the Airbus A320 well enough to land in the frigid Hudson River. As a result of the courage and skill of the pilots and crew, all 155 passengers and crew members survived; and

Whereas, the State of South Carolina and the people of this country are once again reminded of the valor demonstrated every day by airline pilots while transporting the public around the world; and

Whereas, of the survivors were two South Carolinians, Miss Amy Melissa Jolly and Mrs. Shae Doster Childers, both of Gaffney, S.C.; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the Senate to join the families of these two South Carolinians in expressing our heartfelt appreciation for the tremendous good fortune bestowed upon these native daughters. Now, therefore,
