WINTER SPORTSImproved varieties of perennial ryegrass combined with the tremendous increase in the useof dormant sports turf during the winter have made overseeding in the South as importantas irrigation, fertilizing and aerifying. Sports turf managers from Fort Lauderdale, FL, toPalm Desert, CA, reveal their overseeding methods. They provide important tips onachieving high germination rates in the fall and encouraging the warm-season grasses toreturn in the spring. University turf researchers and turfgrass breeders report some of theirlatest discoveries. More sports turf managers have been able to justify overseeding wheredormant warm-season turf is used heavily during the winter.

26 THE LIVING SOIL - ABSORBING SHOCK THENATURAL WAYTwo experienced turf specialists state why they feel sports turf managers need to paymore attention to the organisms living in the soil. The Lawn Institute's Eliot Roberts andThe National Sports Turf Council's Fred Grau build a case for including clay and humus insports turf root zones. They also describe how maintenance practices can encourageorganisms living within the soil to keep it soft and resilient for both the health of the turfand the athletes playing on it. This story is a look below the surface for a betterunderstanding of how soil impacts turf management.

There's nothing like a steep slope to giveyou a new slant on front mower performance.

Especially when you compare a JohnDeere front mower to the leadingcompetition.

So what makes a John Deere front mowerclimb better? A combination of two things.

Sure a lot of front mowers have whatthey call a traction assist device. But onlyJohn Deere has a true differential lock forpositive pulling power.

Standard equipment onthe F930 and F935(OPtional on the F910,F912, andF915},]ohn

Deere's exclusive hydrau-lic weight transfer valvelets you shift the weightof the deck to the drivewheels for added tractionon the go.

Only] ohn Deere gives you atrue locking differential forpositive two-wheel trac-tion assist in slipperyconditions.

It's also truethat some frontmowers haveweight trans-fer control. But onceagain onlyJohn Deere puts the control at your finger-tips. So you can hydraulically dial in moretraction on the go.

And since a John Deere lets youengage both these features at thesame time, our front mowers giveyou the most efficient pulling powerin the business.

Power that adapts to a lot of everyday

jobs, too. Like mowing in wet conditions.Or pulling straight along sidehills. And because king of the hill isn't the only

game in town, a JohnDeere front mowercomes with a lot ofexclusive features aflatlander will appreci-ate, too.

Take our powersteering for example. No other front mowergives you two turnlock-to-lock steeringwith such ease. Suchcontrol in tight areas. Two turn lock-to-lockpower steering gives JohnDeere front mowershighly responsive controlfor excellent maneuver-ability in tight areas.

Two pedal speed anddirection control helpsreduce fatigue. Pro-vides steadier, lessjerky speed control onrough ground com-pared to heel and toe, single pedal units.

Or compare our straight forward two-pedal speed and direction control to some ofthe backward controls you've been behind.

The more you compare, the more you'll seethat when it comes to front mower performance,we're doing more than spinning our wheels.Ask your dealer for a demonstration soon.
