2009 CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA CROSS COUNTRY GUIDE

Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan cross country. I am confident that Coach Daniel Caulfield, his staff and the players will make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful cam-pus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams have won statewide and regional titles and won our first Pennsylvania State Athletic Con-ference’s (PSAC) Dixon Trophy for 2008-09. The Dixon Tro-phy is emblematic of athletic supremacy the PSAC — the premier Division II athletic conference in America today. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for the magnificent accomplishment.

I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2008-09 academic year, a total of 167 California University of Pennsylvania student athletes, representing all sports were named to the Spring 2009 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the sixth-straight semester, the Cal U athletic pro-grams compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regard-less of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natalie Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Roadman Park. Cross country and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were athletes have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field from their coaches, their team-mates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2009 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.

California University of Pennsylvania student-athletes posted a banner year in athletic competition during the 2008-09 season, six PSAC West titles, four PSAC crowns and four NCAA regional trophies with eight team and 15 individ-ual appearances in NCAA post-season play. In addition to athletic prowess, the Vulcans also excelled in the classroom. A total of 167 Cal U student athletes, representing all sports (fall, winter & spring), were named to the Spring 2009 edi-tion of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the sixth-straight semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. During the Spring 2009 semester, Vulcan student-athletes compiled a 3.11 GPA - the highest average since the Spring 2007 se-mester. Cal U also featured nine ESPN The Magazine Aca-demic All-District selections, highlighted by the school’s first Academic All-Americans since 2006. To be eligible for the academic all-district honor, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.20 GPA or higher, reached sophmore athlet-ic and academic standing at their institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games as a starter or an important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. In the spring, women’s cross country posted the highest team GPA at 3.71 and featured all nine runners on the Honor Roll. On the men’s side, the cross country team posted top GPA of the seven sports at 3.40 with seven runners holding a 3.00 GPA or better. In terms of pure numbers during the spring, football led all 16 sports with 27 represen-tatives on the Honor Roll, followed by women’s soccer (21) and women’s track & field (19). Women’s cross country led all programs with 100 percent of its team (nine-of-nine) on the Honor Roll. Cal U also boasted 37 student-athletes that registered a perfect 4.0 GPA during one or both of the semesters.

2009 CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA CROSS COUNTRY GUIDE

Daniel Caulfield enters his third season as the head coach for the men’s and women’s cross country programs at California University of Pennsylvania. In addition to his work with the cross country teams, he serves as an assistant coach with the men’s and women’s indoor

and outdoor track & field teams. In his short time with the program, he has coached the Vulcans’ first two all-conference runners since 1994. Last year, Caulfield guided Christopher Clark to one of the most impressive seasons by a runner in program history. Clark earned NCAA All-America honors and was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Atlantic Region and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year laurels. In addition to their improvement on the course, Caulfield’s teams are also excelling in the classroom. Last year, the Vulcan men’s team was named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team after compling a 3.255 cumulative grade-point average. Individually, Clark also became the program’s first-ever Academic All-American last spring. Caulfield joined Cal U after serving as the men’s and women’s track & field and cross country coach at PSAC-rival Clarion University. A native of Roscommon, Ireland, he started coaching at his alma mater and Division II perennial powerhouse Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo. While serving as a coach with the Grizzlies, Adams State won four NCAA women’s cross country

national championships (1998, 1999, 2003 and 2004) and two NCAA men’s titles (1998 and 2003). During his collegiate career, he was a 10-time All-American and two-time NAIA National Champion. He helped lead the Grizzlies’ cross country program to National Championships in 1993 and 1994 after placing in the top five during both championship races. Caulfield also was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) record holder in the 800 and 1500-meter runs. He was named to the RMAC All-Time Men’s Cross Country Team. Caulfield earned his bachelor’s degree from ASC in Exercise Physiology and in late 1996 returned to Ireland to work in the exercise physiology department of the Blackrock Clinic, one of the country’s most established healthcare facilities. He returned to ASC in 1998 to complete his master’s degree and coached there until December 2004. The Irish native also holds the national indoor record in the 800 meters. Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to

provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the one associate. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s. Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, two assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.
