“It Takes a Village” – A Letter from the

Executive Director

Dear Friends,

Excitement prevailed this past year in the life of The Restoration House and the

families with whom we journey. This report is a document of celebration as we

look over the events of 2009 and how God has prepared us for everything he has

in store in the coming months. Please take a moment to read along. I think you

will find yourself celebrating right along with us!

A deep sense of community has always been foundational to The Restoration

House, as we understand that none of us were created to live life alone. Each of

us needs “a village” to help us live up to our full potential. The families of TRH

are changing their futures with the help of their ever growing “villages” of

support, friendship, and accountability. The poem below was written by a low-

income single mother on her own journey of restoration, as she reflected on the

village that came alongside of her.

Day by day, we see

Our children begin to bloom

Making friends, running with life

And soon we feel free to follow.

The children are the ones

Who show us the way

We run to keep up with their future

Blessed to receive a second chance

To be the person and parent

We knew we could be.

It truly takes a village

Not only to raise a child

But to raise a person.

- Amber Shearer

It is our prayer that you will continually be blessed through your “village”.

Thank you so much for partnering with us in helping to restore single mothers

and their children back to God’s good intent for their lives.

Journeying toward Restoration,

Daniel Watson

CoFounder, Executive Director

Reflections…

“I loved mentoring. It challenged me to reach outside of my comfort

level. When I did I was inspired by what I saw. Mothers with so much

working against them – as if they were

mustering their way upstream every day.

When I compare it to my life I feel inspired

that these mothers can put one foot in front of

the other each day.”

-Christin York, Team Mentor

"While we are still

getting to know our ‘mom’, we are amazed

at the challenges that she has overcome, and

the extremely tough times she has faced--

times she would not be able to make it through

alone, and because of the Restoration House she does not have to.

We have faith that our mom will continue to

see the love of God through relationships with her mentors and

that she will learn God is faithful through the

daily miracles in her life."

Purpose The Restoration House helps to restore single mothers and their children back to God’s good intent for their lives.

Mission The purpose of TRH is accomplished by providing transitional supportive housing and team mentoring in a safe

learning environment where single mothers and their children are given an opportunity to restore Life’s Four Key

Relationships through a personalized, guided plan.

Life’s Four Key Relationships

God – Our relationship with God is the central relationship that affects all

others.

Self – God desires for us to view ourselves as He does; as created by Him and in

His own image.

Others – God desires for us to love our neighbors as ourselves.

Creation – God desires for us to act responsibly toward His creation; He calls

us to be good stewards of all that He gives us.

Five-Way Partnership Model

The mission is accomplished in the context of a five-way partnership model in which each party contributes to the overall restoration of the family.

Strategy

The Restoration House’s holistic strategy involves three complimentary components when partnering with single

mother families.

Transformational Housing

TRH provides a housing unit for up to two years, based on the participant’s need. Each mother participates in a

ten month intensive financial literacy program. TRH partners with other organizations to assist in securing

permanent housing for participants when their stay at TRH concludes. Homeownership is encouraged for

qualified families along with homeownership training. Currently, TRH partners with Habitat for Humanity, and

Knoxville Leadership Foundation, for families seeking homeownership. Individual Development Accounts

(matched-savings) are made available for families working toward homeownership or secondary education.

Team Mentoring

Volunteers from local congregations form a team of 6 to 8 mentors to walk alongside each participating family.

The Mentor Team provides support and friendship throughout the partnership period and beyond. Our

approach creates a diverse team of mentors which allows for a broader spectrum of support. The mentors are

essential contributors to the restoration of participating families.

Service Planning

TRH staff coordinates family services. A covenant is signed by the family outlining the basic limitations and

expectations of the program. A Family Advocate assists in developing an individualized service agreement with

the participant, identifying goals and action steps in areas such as education, employment, finances, life skills, and

personal growth. Additionally, TRH partners, with community resources for job training, counseling, life skills,

physical fitness, etc.

Rebekah & Averie’s Story – “It Takes a Village”

The Restoration House’s First Two Year Graduate

(watch the video at

www.youtube.com/trhofeasttn2007)

I came to TRH at 19 with a one week old baby. I had been

kicked out by my mom when I was pregnant and stayed with

some family for a while. Nothing permanent.

I came to TRH terrified, nervous, shy, depressed, and every

other emotion imaginable besides happy. I had no idea what the

future had in store for me and I was terrified. I wondered how

on earth I was going to be stuck in a program for two years. It

seemed like a ridiculously long amount of time. And having to

get to know a bunch of strangers! Let’s not even go there!

Meeting new people was not a strong point for me.

I am now more comfortable and secure with my surroundings. I meet new people with a smile and I gladly share my

story. I have overcome that old frame of mind. I attend church most every Sunday and my relationship with God has

grown. Out with the old and in with the new!

My mentors mean the world to me! They are part of my being. They have been there when I have fallen down and

have picked me back up again. If I make a mistake, they tell me how it is. If I need a shoulder to cry on, they are

there. They have been a rock for me to lean on the last two years and I hope that it continues.

I have grown in my willingness to meet new people and share my story. I put on a smile and hold out a hand. I don’t

shy away and hide in a corner any more.

Before I came to the TRH I didn’t know many people, and those I did know were probably not the best to be around.

Bad influences, I guess you could say. And now I can’t even count how many people I have met and grown bonds

with. I am surrounded by many warm and positive people. It is amazing what a foundation of good people can do for

you.

I am doing more on my own then ever before! I can cook.

Well, somewhat. Haha. I am maintaining my own bills and

finances. The financial class was a great resource for getting

everything into perspective. I have learned how to make a

budget and try to stick to it.

Averie is my pride and joy; the light of my life. She is the

reason for everything I have done and learned in the past two

years. Because of her I have become a more confident person

as well as mother. In the beginning I was terrified that

anything I did would be the wrong thing.

Before I came to TRH I didn’t attend church. Sure, I believed in God, Heaven, and

Hell, but I was bored at church and felt like whoever was speaking, wasn’t speaking

to me. It was gibberish. After that first time Mandy and Daniel invited me to

Crossings, I was hooked. The music was terrific. I felt as though I understood the

teaching. I wasn’t being told that I was going to Hell if I didn’t do this or that. I

formed a relationship with God. I am learning to be patient and put Him in control.

When I first came to TRH, I was “a mess of insecurities.” I thought I was worthless.

I thought I was fat, ugly, stupid, and that no one would ever want anything to do

with me. I have learned since then though. Yes, I have made mistakes, but everyone

does. No matter what errors I have made or what I look like, people will care about

me. I am important just like everyone else and I have a purpose. I am beautiful and I

am strong. Most importantly, my daughter and God love me and believe in me.

In the beginning when things were given to me, I felt somewhat like a charity case.

Now I accept that I need help and I take what is offered. I value what has been given

to me. People are generous.

Overall, The Restoration House has been a Godsend. If it weren’t for Mandy,

Daniel, and all of my mentors, I don’t know where I would be. I have been shown

more love, support, and acceptance, than I have ever been shown. I love these guys

more than anything and would do all of this all over again. It has been a quick two

years and I am sad that it has gone by.

Before:

When Rebekah and Averie came to The Restoration House they were new to

Knoxville and seeking a home outside of a domestic violence shelter. At nineteen

Rebekah had little confidence and self-worth. She came with a newborn, no

money, no job, and no education beyond high school.

After:

After two years at The Restoration House, Rebekah is a confident, well rounded

young woman. Rebekah moved with her daughter into their very own market-rent

apartment in Knoxville. Rebekah completed CNA training and was hired at

LaPetitie Academy where she still works full-time. She is an integral part of her

church and recently won a volunteer service award. Rebekah is managing her own

money and making very wise decisions since going through financial literacy courses

and meeting with an ongoing TRH financial consultant. She is also a fantastic

parent; she continually impresses us with her gentle guidance and excellent

parenting skills. Through hard work, determination, and the support of The

Restoration House she has changed the future for her and her daughter. Their lives

will never be the same and we are so proud of them!

A Mentor Reflects…

"The resilience of the human spirit continues to

amaze me. For the last two years, I have

partnered with a number of others who have

journeyed together to support a young single

mother. In the beginning, we were all strangers with

individual hearts…in a belief that we could make a difference in the life of a

single mother and her child. Two years later, as I

sat at a table with the strangers, I now consider

friends, we listened as one heart to the Mom we

have mentored. I admit there have been days

when I felt my best was not good enough, or

wondered if I was making a significant impact on

this single mother’s life, (after all, I do not know what it is like to walk in

her shoes). But tonight, as her heart poured out

the gratitude, friendship, and most of all the love

she has developed for each of us it left tears in

my eyes and my heart very full.

I will continue the TRH

mantra and pray for God’s good intent for her life. I

also thank Him for allowing me to be a

witness of the amazing changes the human spirit

is able to accomplish when we come together

as one. " _- Lucy Creel

Highlights from 2009

January – Financial Literacy Class

For our Participating Families the financial hurdle is a difficult one to cross. Until a

mom has a career, most single mothers are accepting minimum wage at the first job that

comes along. Additionally, when these families do start making enough money to

support themselves, so few are equipped with the necessary skills to properly manage

their money. . In January TRH kicked off a 6 month financial literacy program that

walks our families through the best of what Dave Ramsey and others have to offer,

while also assigning them an individual financial counselor. Four of our families graduated the financial program.

After the first six months we saw immediate results. One family was able to save her whole $3,000 tax refund check!

February – National Mentoring Initiative

The Restoration House is founded on collaboration and cooperation; it

is in our DNA. For this reason, we were so excited to be chosen as one

of six local organizations included in the National Mentoring Initiative, a

program taking place all over the U.S. Since February, our staff has

been integrally involved in learning from, and shaping the practices of

other local and national organizations who work in mentoring, with the intent to make us all better at what we do.

Out of this effort Knoxville Mentoring Initiative was formed. To learn more, visit www.KnoxMentoring.org .

March – New Board Members & Retreat

We are very focused on remaining a strong organization long into the future not for ourselves, but for the thousand of

low-income single mother families throughout Knoxville. At the foundation of every solid non-profit is a strong and

active Board of Directors. Through our board development process we brought on three new board members in

March, and were privileged to have them jump right in at our annual retreat. This spring we will be developing the

board from 6 members to 15. To see a full listing of our current board members please see page 14 of this report.

May –Akima Club Grant

In May, we connected with a wonderful women’s service organization in Knoxville; the

Akima Club. These generous ladies have been giving back to our community through

grants and volunteer service for over 40 years. We are deeply grateful for their grant of

$1,000 in 2009 that helped with some of our housing subsidies.

June – Curves Fitness

In June, The Restoration House received a grant through Curves Fitness that allows us

to completely outfit the exercise room in our new facility with Curves Fitness

equipment. This was tremendous news and we can’t thank our friends Ivan and Chris

McDaneld enough for initiating this process. It is a tremendous blessing!

July – Single Parent’s Roundtable

In July, The Restoration House was asked to join the newly formed Single Parent’s Roundtable of Knoxville. This

roundtable meets quarterly and includes many of the organizations and churches in our community who have a

passion for single parents and their children. We are excited about the collaboration and resources that are going to

continue to flow through this roundtable and great still, the lives that will be changed because of it.

August – Social Work Intern ; Megan DiBenedetto

In August, Megan joined us as our family advocate intern. She is a second year graduate

student at UT’s College of Social Work and will be with us for two semesters. Thanks to our

partnership with Knoxville Leadership Foundation, who supervises the intern program, Megan

has been working with us at 24 hours a week. She is an incredible learner and has really

connected with the families of The Restoration House. Megan has contributed excellent work

to our mentors and financial literacy team. .She will be greatly missed as she leaves us in May.

October – Kim Spoon, LCSW Joins the Team

In October, Kim Spoon joined the team at The Restoration House. Kim is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with

over 20 years experience. She brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table in working with our single

mother families. For a time, Kim also worked with several of our government social service agencies so she serves as

a tremendous advocate when a family needs to access those services. With her help, our families are making

tremendous advances in their relationships, while also accomplishing real world goals in education, career

development, parenting, and self-esteem.

November –Central Baptist Church of Bearden Partnership

On November 22nd, we officially announced our new partnership with Central Baptist

Church of Bearden (CBCB), in the development of a permanent site for The

Restoration House. The new site will be located behind Middlebrook Christian

Ministries in West Knoxville.

CBCB will play the role of lead partner in this new development, contributing

$72,000 to the project, the use of the land, overseeing the construction, and acting as

the developer for the project. It is an honor to be working so closely with CBCB, as well as the continually growing

list of other churches who are working to make this dream a reality. For all the latest developments, visit the TRH

website.

December – First Baptist Concord joins One Church, One

Family Partnership

In December, First Baptist Concord became the first church to join our newly formed

One Church, One Family Partnership. FBC has long been a financial supporter of TRH

as well as an advocate for single mothers in our community. Now, through this

strategic partnership, FBC will not only be contributing $36,000 to our new development but will assist in creating

teams to mentor single mother families amongst a host of other strategies.. To read more about the structure of

these new partnerships please continue to pages 16 & 17. In 2010 TRH still needs 13 more churches to add to this

coalition..

10 th Annual LUNAFEST

For the last nine years LUNAFEST has been celebrating women film makers, showcasing their

films and talents in communities across the United States. For the first time since its inception

the national traveling film festival made its way to Knoxville in 2008. LUNAFEST features

short films by, for, and about women. LUNA, the makers of a nutritional bar for women,

sought to find a way to support women's issues while also giving back to the community.

In addition to providing national exposure for emerging female film makers, Lunafest also

supports one of the most important causes for women today by donating 15 percent of the

proceeds nationally to the Breast Cancer Fund. The remaining 85 percent of the proceeds from LUNAFEST

Knoxville go directly to The Restoration House of East Tennessee.

Since their beginning, LUNAFEST has raised over $750,000 nationally. The first two years of LUNAFEST Knoxville

were very successful and we are already in the planning stages for 2010. If you would like to get involved or help us

get the word about LUNAFEST 2010, a contact Daniel Watson. LUNAFEST Knoxville 2010 is tentatively scheduled

for Thursday, October 21st at the Square Room located in Market Square. For more information visit us

at www.lunafestknoxville.com.

3R D Annual Restoring Hope Breakfast

In November, we held our 2nd Annual Restoring Hope Breakfast at the Cokesbury

Center on Kingston Pike. It was a tremendous celebration, as over 130 guests came

together to hear stories of hope and transformation from our single mother families. It

was an honor to have two of our families personally share their stories of struggle and

new found restoration. We also had the privilege of officially announcing our new

partnership with Central Baptist Church of Bearden (CBCB) in the development of our

permanent site behind Middlebrook Christian Ministries in West Knoxville.

Over $62,000 was raised at the event to help in the restoration of single mother families throughout the Knoxville

area. This amount blew our goal of $25,000 out of the water and we were absolutely amazed by the response of

those who came. We added seven new members to our Restoring Hope Society bringing the total membership to

nine. Five of those new members have committed to give $1,000 a year for three years and two of those members

have committed $5,000 a year for three years. We are amazed by these very generous supporters and thank them for

helping to ensure the long-term impact of The Restoration House in the lives of low-income single mother families.

We would like to also specially thank Christine Sparks and her wonderful team for their work in pulling off such an

incredible event.

This year on the Restoring Hope LUNCH will take place on Tuesday, November 9th from 11:45 to 12:45 PM.

The location of this event is TBD. If you would like to attend or serve as a table host for this important event,.

contact Daniel Watson and we will be sure you receive the appropriate information..

Expanding in 2010

In 2009, major progress occurred in all three of our initiatives. These initiatives were to “Develop a Permanent Site,

“Increase Staff”, and to develop our “One Church, One Family Partnership Strategy”. All three of these initiatives

depend upon the progress of the other and in turn must be carried out incrementally. Each of these initiatives is

geared toward growing our capacity to work with three times the amount of families while continuing to offer

exceptional support to our current families. Read below about our progress as well as what’s ahead.

Develop a Permanent Site One of our major initiatives from 2009 was to grow our housing stock. In 2008, TRH added three more housing

units and increased capacity to five families. This was an intermediate solution to developing a long term site for The

Restoration House and the families with whom we work. Right now those five units, as well as the TRH office space,

are scattered among three locations throughout Knoxville. Over the last two years we have been working with

Central Baptist Church of Bearden (CBCB) to develop a two acre piece of property behind Middlebrook Christian

Ministries (MCM) into 15 housing units with three offices, an exercise room, community laundry, computer lab,

children’s playroom, multi-purpose room with kitchen, as well as reception space. Our goal is to break ground in

2010. This is a God-sized project involving many community partners as we look to lower costs, raise money, and

construct the buildings. Please be in prayer concerning how you and your organization can help contribute to this

project. Feel free to contact us as we would love to share more information. Read on to view site plans.

Increase Staff

Another initiative from 2009 was to increase our staff by adding on a designated full-time Family Advocate. In

October we hired Kim Spoon. Kim is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years of experience in the field

working with several agencies and nonprofits throughout Knoxville during that time. She brings a wealth of

experience and has helped us greatly in delivering top notch advocacy and service planning for our families. Along

with Kim, we also had Megan join the team as a 24 hour per week intern. Megan is a second year grad student in the

College of Social Work at UT and brings a lot of energy and passion to her work at The Restoration House. As we

look to expand in 2010 we will be growing our team from 3.5 full-time equivalents, to 3 full-time staff, increasing

two positions to full-time and adding in a part-time property manager who will then live at the new site.

One Church, One Family Partnership Strategy

At The Restoration House (TRH) we believe partnership with the local church is essential if single mother families

are going to be successful on their journey toward restoration. Although we have several strong partnerships with a

few local churches we are working on developing 14 strategic partnerships as CBCB and TRH move forward with the

development of The Village at MCM. These church partnerships are critical not only in developing the site into

multi-family housing, offices, and community space for single mother families, but also in the long term support of

these families as they work toward wholeness and independence. We are seeking out 14 churches that have a deep

passion for low-income single mother families to partner with CBCB and TRH through:

Investing – Although the property will be owned by CBCB, our desire is for these 15 partner churches (including

CBCB at $72,000), to invest $36,000 each over a 3 year period that will go directly to the development of the site

into housing and community space. This works out to be $1,000 per month over the initial 3 year period that will

have a significant impact on single mother families for a least the next ten years. Each church would in a sense “own”

one of the units that will be occupied by single mothers. Two foundations have also expressed interest in matching

50 cent on the dollar for moneys given by the 14 church partners toward the development of the property. This

means a church’s $36,000 could then be doubled through the matching gifts of these foundations, making the effect of

that church’s contribution $72,000!

Because the site will likely be built with a high percentage of volunteer labor, we encourage each partner church to

join in on the actual construction of the property. The construction stage is a great time to build excitement in the

church for the future..

Referrals - All of the families who come to TRH are referred from other partnering organizations and agencies.

Strategic partner churches will be offered preference when referring a single mother family to TRH.

Mentoring – Each partner church may then have opportunity to make a relational investment in the lives of these

families by providing 6 to 8 mentors working as a team for one of the TRH Participating Families. These mentor

teams are one of the most crucial factors in the restoration of the family as they act as a social network as well as the

emotional and spiritual support of their Participating Family.

Adopt-A-Unit – Each partner church may also agree to stock a participating family’s apartment with furniture and

household items. These items are available to the participating family to take with them when they transition into

permanent housing. In addition, volunteers may agree to serve as the long-term maintenance crew for their

Participating Family’s unit.

Volunteers - Churches can also provide volunteers in many other areas besides mentoring and property

maintenance; such as spiritual formation, childcare, office support, public relations, and others.

Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) -These matched savings accounts are used to build the capacity to

gain assets like secondary education and homeownership. A partner church has the option of supplying the 3:1 match

for a family’s IDA. The provision of the IDA account potentially serves to help provide for a family’s future in

a way that make a long term impact as they gain more assets, and in turn move across the poverty line.

Financial Support – There are also churches who may choose to support TRH through one-time or regular

financial gifts.

**As of the publication of this report we have 6 of the 14 partner churches needed
