“Immeasurably More” – A Letter from the

Executive Director

Dear Friends,

In 2008 God has done “immeasurably more” than we could have ever hoped or

imagined. Who would have thought that when we started less than two years

ago that we would already be actively working with five families and over forty

mentors.

I am continually reminded that we haven’t done this on our own. It is simply

amazing to think of all those who have partnered with us in this adventure of

helping to restore single mothers and their children; everyone from the financial

supporters, volunteers, community partners, churches, and so many more.

We hope that this annual report is a reflection of what God can do when people

catch on to his vision for restoration and hope.

Thank each of you so much for partnering with The Restoration House and the

families we journey with each and every day.

Journeying toward Restoration,

Daniel Watson

Executive Director

A Story of Hope…

"I came into The Restoration House not

knowing exactly what to expect, just hoping to get

some help & support in making a life for myself

and my daughter. I came with my mind as open as possible, considering the

not so great past I’ve had. I haven’t grown up feeling like life had too much of a support system. I have to

say, meeting all of my mentors was quite

overwhelming. I mean what do you expect when

you meet a bunch of strangers that are

supposed to love, help, and support you… and to

form a bond with. Now that I know them all

though, I feel like they are an extension. They are a

lot like family and I love them as if they are. Then

there is Mandy and Daniel. They feel like my protectors. There aren’t

really words to explain them, other than that

they are wonderful. And as the months have gone by so quickly, amongst all the issues I’ve been trying to overcome, I slowly feel as though life is changing for the better. Doors are

opening and I am growing mentally and spiritually.

Who would have

thought???"

Purpose The Restoration House helps to restore single mothers and their children back to God’s good intent for their lives.

Mission The purpose of TRH is accomplished by providing transitional supportive housing and team mentoring in a safe

learning environment where single mothers and their children are given an opportunity to restore Life’s Four Key

Relationships through a personalized, guided plan.

Life’s Four Key Relationships

God – Our relationship with God is the central relationship that affects all others.

Self – God desires for us to view ourselves as He does; as created by Him and in His

own image.

Others – God desires for us to love our neighbors as ourselves.

Creation – God desires for us to act responsibly toward His creation; He calls us to

be good stewards of all that He gives us.

Five-Way Partnership Model

The mission is accomplished in the context of a five-way partnership model in which each party contributes to the overall restoration of the family.

Strategy

The Restoration House’s holistic strategy involves three complimentary components when partnering with single

mother families.

Housing

TRH provides a housing unit for up to two years, based on the participant’s need. Each mother participates in a

six month intensive financial literacy program. TRH partners with other organizations to assist in securing

permanent housing for participants when their stay at TRH concludes. Homeownership is encouraged for

qualified families along with homeownership training. Currently, TRH partners with Habitat for Humanity, and

Knoxville Leadership Foundation, for families seeking homeownership. Individual Development Accounts

(matched-savings) are made available for families working toward homeownership or secondary education.

Mentoring

Volunteers from local congregations form a team of 6 to 10 mentors to walk alongside each participating family.

The Mentor Team provides support and friendship throughout the partnership period and beyond. Our

approach creates a diverse team of mentors which allows for a broader spectrum of support. The mentors are

essential contributors to the restoration of participating families.

Service Planning

TRH staff coordinates family services. A covenant is signed by the family outlining the basic limitations and

expectations of the program. A Family Advocate assists in developing an individualized service agreement with

the participant, identifying goals and action steps in areas such as education, employment, finances, life skills, and

personal growth. Additionally, TRH partners, on an as-needed basis, with community resources for job training,

counseling, life skills, physical fitness, etc.

Highlights from 2008

February – The 4-Plex on Oak Ave

One of our three initiatives for 2008 was to grow our capacity to five families

through the use of an intermediate housing strategy. This initiative started to

become a reality when we heard that some of our supporters purchased a large

four-plex in Mechanicsville, near downtown. This opportunity seemed to fit our

need perfectly, the owners planned to live on-site would therefore maintain a

healthy presence there In June 2008 a lease was signed and partnership with these

fantastic TRH supporters continues to grow.

March – Our Second Family

We were so excited to move in our second family. This young mom and her daughter

came to us from a partner organization, House of Courage. HOC worked with her for six

months, preparing her for independent living as they helped her to acquire basic life skills.

Meanwhile our TRH team of staff and mentors started working to help her learn to drive,

live at peace with her family, and begin working while considering a future career. This

young mom made a lot of progress while she was with us and we know that she and her

daughter are now more prepared for the next stage of their lives.

Apri l - First Annual Board Retreat

In April, our board of directors held its first annual retreat at Jubilee Acres farm owned by Ken and Linda Piety. This

fantastic location helped the TRH staff & board to get away and plan for the future of The Restoration House. The

Pietys were incredibly hospitable and our dedicated board left further energized and passionate about the future of

our single mother families. There was a renewed sense of vision and direction as we planned for the next stage of

development for The Restoration House. Since that time we have added three more board members and are planning

our retreat for March. Please be in prayer over them as they continue steering the direction of TRH.

Apri l – Strol ler Strides & LunaFest

Also in April, The Restoration House was the beneficiary of the national film festival,

LunaFest. This was LunaFest’s first ever stop in Knoxville. Stephanie Ramirez, and her

team at Stroller Strides worked together to pull off a fantastic event at the Two River’s

Pavilion in Louisville. With over 15 sponsors, viewers were able to come and enjoy

themselves while learning more about the vision and mission of The Restoration House.

This was an incredibly powerful evening for everyone who attended. Be looking for

more information about LunaFest Knoxville to be held in October of this year.

May – 25 Mentors and Growing

Our second initiative for 2008 was to grow our base of mentors by partnering with local

Churches. After training our third team in May, we had more than 25 mentors and were

partnering with three churches. By the end of 2008, this number grew to over 45 mentors and

5 church partners. What an incredible blessing to have that kind of support behind our single

mother families!

July – Smart Savings IDA Program

The Restoration House’s third initiative for 2008 was to develop and implement a Smart Savings IDA Program. In

July we partnered together with Covenant Community Capital and Houston, TX and SunTrust Bank to implement

this program for helping our families not only increase their income, but also begin developing financial assets. An

IDA is essentially a matched savings program. At The Restoration House we match a family’s savings 3:1 for the

purchase of home, an education, or vehicle. This is an incredible opportunity for our families; visit our website to

August – A Day in the Life…

This month marked the inauguration of A Day in the Life. This free one hour monthly event gives people an

opportunity see the day to day struggles of a low-income single mother family in creative and compelling ways using

stories, images, and testimony. This is a casual & informative event, helping others see get a glimpse into that which

thousands of Knox County families face every day. If you want to attend this life changing event or are interested in

allowing us to bring it to your group, please visit our website for more information.

September – Our First Intern

In 2008, The Restoration House was blessed by its first intern, Danielle, from Johnson Bible

College’s marriage and family therapy program. During her four months with us she was able

to see the joys and the pain of working with our single mother families. Danielle’s time here

was a tremendous learning experience for both parties. We are grateful her added energy in

helping to restore single mothers and their children.

October – A Mother Honored in Eva Magazine

Rebekah, our first mother at The Restoration House, has great

passion and a knack for photography. In October of 2008, Eva

Magazine published some of her photos in an article they wrote

about TRH. We are so proud of Rebekah and her work.

November – First Annual Restoring Hope Breakfast

Our first annual Restoring Hope Breakfast was a huge success. The 75 people

who attended were able to experience an inside look into the heart and work of

The Restoration House. Some great relationships began from the breakfast and

we can’t wait to see how God continues to connect his vision for single moms

and their children into the lives of people from around our area. We are

indescribably grateful for the over $26,000 that was committed in one short

hour, that will help us to continue to serve our Participating Families.

December – Family Christmas Shop

The Restoration House partnered together with over ten other organizations to

be a part of the Family Christmas Shop. This annual shop is setup in a donated

retail space with all brand new items for the whole family. Low-income families

from partnering organization are able to shop for their loved ones with the same

dignity you and I do. Visit www.familychristmasshop.com for more information.

Growing in 2009

The Restoration House is working on three major initiatives in 2009. All three are geared at growing our

capacity to work with more families while offer exceptional support to our current ones.

Develop a Permanent Site One of our major initiatives from 2008 was to grow our housing stock. Last year TRH added three more housing

units and increased capacity to five families. This was an intermediate solution to developing a long term site for The

Restoration House and the families with whom we work. Right now those five units, as well as the TRH office space

is scattered among three locations throughout Knoxville. This year we are working with a local church to develop a

two acre piece of property into 15 housing units with three offices, an exercise room, community laundry, computer

lab, children’s playroom, multi-purpose room with kitchen, as well as reception space. Our goal is to break ground

in 2009. This is a God-sized project involving many community partners as we look lower costs, raise money, and

construct the buildings. The team leading the project is advocating for a “Habitat” style build utilizing as many

volunteers as possible for framing and other jobs. Please be in prayer concerning how you and your organization can

help contribute to this project. Feel free to contact us as we would love to share more information.

Increase Staff

Mandy Watson has worked as TRH’s part time Family Advocate and Program Coordinator since the inception of

The Restoration House. Early in 2009, The Restoration House will hire a part-time Family Advocate freeing Mandy

up to focus solely on program coordination. Adding to the TRH staff team is very exciting! The new Family

Advocate will have a background in social work and will be able to offer our families a more structured plan for

reaching their long term goals and dreams. This position will transfer into full-time upon completion of the new site.

Implement Church Partnership Strategy

At The Restoration House (TRH) we believe partnership with the local church is a necessity if single mother families

are going to experience success. There are many ways TRH is partnering with local churches in serving low-income

single mother families throughout the area. As The Restoration House continues to grow in 2009 we want to be even

more intentional and strategic in growing our partnerships with local churches that have a desire to mentors

single mother families and step into their journey of restoration.

Below are some of the many ways The Restoration House partners with local churches.

Mentoring - A church or a group of churches provide a diverse group of 6 to 10 mentors for a participating family.

Mentor groups are one of the most crucial factors in the restoration of the family because of the social network that is

built through these relationships.

Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) -These matched savings accounts are used to build the capacity to

gain assets like secondary education and homeownership. A partner church has the option of supplying the 3:1 match

for a family’s IDA.

Volunteers - Churches are able to provide volunteers in many other areas besides mentoring; such as spiritual

formation, childcare, office support, public relations, and others.

Financial Support - Some churches choose to support TRH through one-time or regular financial gifts.
