Network basics

Principle / TerminologyDefinition : a computer network allows several machines to communicate between them, in order to exchange information, to transfer files or to share resources (printer, etc).

Specific Terms :•Packet : Information in circulation on the network•Format : Language•Logical address : Host Name / IP address

•Protocol : Specification describing the rules to be followed in a data exchange

•Client / Server : Host computer (server) makes its information available to clients

Local administrators had to request another network number from Internet before a new network could be installed locally.

Internet routing tables were beginning to grow

Addressing mode

Manual mode :The network administrator sets manually each @IP

in each PC. Used for small private networks, or to separate some PCs from the rest of the network.

DHCP mode :The DHCP mode uses a client-server model. The

DHCP server manages the information related to the TCP/IP configuration, and its dynamic transmission to the clients.

Information = @IP and Lease (using period)

Direct Connection : The “source PC” compares its own @IP to the “recipient PC” @IP, then

sends the packet to the “recipient PC”.

Laboratory dispatching : All analysis requests are sent to an AI, depending on the name of the system indicated by the LIS in the download file - used for connected system using different techniques (VIDAS + VIDIA)

bioMérieux dispatching : All analysis request are sent to AI thanks to a routing table set by the customer in BCI Net software - used for connected systems using the same technique
