- Guided Eagles to fifth place tie at 2009 PGA Minority Collegiate Championship

Paul Perry took over the North Carolina Central University men’s golf program in 2007, the final season on the NCAA Division II level, and was charged with leading the Eagles through a reclassification to NCAA Division I competition.

In his first five seasons, he has amassed 108 wins, including a season-best 41 victories during the 2008-09 campaign. His teams have carded the top seven rounds in the modern day era of NCCU golf.

Perry guided the 2008-09 Eagles to four top four finishes in seven events, including a dramatic come-from-behind victory at the Winston-Salem State Ram Invitational. Perry’s golfers also tied for second place at the Savannah State Tiger Fall Invitational and placed third at the South Carolina State Bulldog Classic. The Eagles also tied for fifth place at the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla., the team’s best finish as a Division I program.

For his efforts, Perry was honored by the North Carolina Central University Student Activities Board as the 2008-09 NCCU Coach of the Year.

A native of Durham, N.C. and a 1967 graduate of NCCU, Perry was a key member of the Eagles football team.

EAGLES PLACE EIGHTH AT MANOR INTERCOLLEGIATE GOLF TOURNAMENT(Sept. 14, 2010)

FARMVILLE, Va. – Senior Ormond Shaw carded a team-best round of 85 and freshman Spencer Jones finished in a tie for 24th place to pace North Carolina Central University on the final day of the Manor Intercollegiate golf tournament in Farmville, Va.

The wind for the final round of play took its toll as scores soared. After posting scores of 77 and 72 in the opening two rounds, Jones recorded a 14-over-par score of 86 on Tuesday for a total of 235. Shaw also saw his final round score grow after tallies of 82 and 81 on Monday. He finished in a tie for 36th with a three-round total of 248.

NCCU sophomore Gavin Thompson placed 47th (94+87+98=279), freshman Andre Jones was one spot back in 48th (93+94+95=282), and sophomore Kempton Mandeville finished 50th (96+96+96=288).

As a team, NCCU placed eighth out of nine teams with a score of 1,042 (346+334+362), beating out MEAC foe Hampton University (376+360+362=1,098).

Event host Longwood University ran away from the field for the victory, posting a team score of 875 (290+285+300), 29 strokes better than second-place High Point University.

EAGLES FINISH EIGHTH AT HBCU HALL OF FAME GOLF INVITATIONAL(Sept. 28, 2010)

ATLANTA – North Carolina Central University freshman Spencer Jones carded a 7-over-par 79 to pace the Eagles to an eighth-place finish at the 2010 HBCU Hall of Fame Invitational Golf Tournament at Browns Mill Golf Course in Atlanta.

The two-day event was cut short due to inclement weather on Sunday (Sept. 26). Tournament officials ended Sunday’s competition in the middle of the second round and used Saturday’s opening-round scores to determine the final standings.

Jones was reportedly standing at 2-under-par through 15 holes when the wet weather rolled in on Sunday, but his day-two success was not factored into the individual standings, as the rookie settled for a tie at 28th place among 43 golfers.

NCCU junior Braden Cox shot an 82 to tie for 34th place, followed by sophomore Gavin Thompson with an 84 (36th tie), sophomore Kempton Mandeville with an 84 (39th) and sophomore Ronald Royster with an 85 (40th). NCCU freshman Jalen Farmer tallied a score of 83 as an extra individual golfer for the Eagles.

As a team, NCCU posted a score of 328 to place
