Summary &Needs Assessment Process Bellview’s achievements since our last SIP:

• Moved out of school building onto two separate campuses while new school was being constructed. • Moved into brand new school. • Received many new technology tools in each classroom with which to teach. • Received training in use of interactive white board technology for every classroom, which is widely implemented. • Participating in iPod lab pilot to support primary reading instruction. • Continued to increase our achievement in the area of writing. • Received two grants to support our Special Education programs with technology and intervention materials. • Added a Title I math specialist for math interventions. • Received grant to start a school garden. • Achieved Outstanding rating on State Report Card • Child development specialist time was cut, we were able to increase it back to previous SIP levels • Classroom teacher was cut, we were able to add a teacher back to support lower class size • Math data is now being incorporated into our data team discussions • Added intervention block for all students 30 minutes daily • Created attendance reward system • Maintained achievement levels in the face of major budget cuts and changes • Added 4 hours per day of technology support

Current Priority Concerns:

• Sharp increase in math cut scores will heavily impact our achievement • Flat-lining trend in reading and math achievement

Goal Areas and Key Strategies:

• Literacy o On-going staff development in the area of reading and writing, continued work on literacy in PLC groups

• Mathematics

o Increase math ability level by differentiating instruction and providing additional instruction

• Safe Schools

o Continued work in our Positive Behavior and Intervention Support program, strengthen social skills for all students through instruction

Background Information Description of School including demographic information:

• Bellview serves Ashland’s most rural areas extending into the mountains and to the California border • Bellview receives Title I targeted assisted funds to assist students falling below grade level in reading • 39% of the students at Bellview participate in the free & reduced lunch program, almost a 10% increase in one year • District K-4 Site based program serving students with the highest special education needs is hosted at Bellview • Active parent & community involvement, PTO, DEAR reading mentor program, SOU partnerships, business

partnerships such as Starbucks, after school programs, YMCA, music swap meet, sports etc. • Bellview is in its 8th year of PBIS implementation • Pilot site for transitioning to the RTI model for academic intervention • Strong academic instructional philosophy- with strong focus in reading, writing and math • Teaching staff all engaged in Professional Learning Communities • We are a fun staff who work and collaborate well together! • Balance between new and experienced teachers- district mentoring program helps facilitate this • Our new building opened in Fall 2009 • Our kindergarten program was significantly cut in the 2009-10 school year from 5.25 hours 5 days per week to 3.5

hours four days per week • In the 2010-11 school year, kindergarten is 3.5 hours per day five days per week • Major budget cuts resulted in loss of instructional support staff and caused a change in leadership (principal) twice

Summary of SIP Planning Process:

• Council made up of new and veteran members • Reviewed state and school assessment data • Site Council reviewed the district SIP • Evaluated previous SIP and discussed goals that have been achieved and set new goals based upon those results • Drafted new action plans for literacy, math and safe schools • Presented draft to staff for input and revised • Met to draft out sections of the plan, outline professional development calendar to support action plans • Review final plan and submit to district

Plan for communicating goals to all stakeholders:

• Draft of action plans reviewed at first Friday meeting with classified staff and at staff meeting with teachers to get feedback and input for revisions.

• Present final draft to all staff • Have PLC groups and PBIS/Data team review periodically and share progress with whole staff

Self-Evaluation Summary

What did your Site Council learn from reviewing all available school-specific data? • Bellview has maintained a high level of academic performance in all areas. We have made particular progress in

writing, increasing in meeting and exceeding categories each year. • Our math scores on state assessments have hovered around 82-85% for the past four years • Our reading scores on state assessments have hovered around 88-93% for the past four years • We had a significant increase in our DIBELS spring reading scores for two years and then last year took a step

back

What are your school’s key achievements and factors that contributed to them?

• Becoming a PBIS School § Whole staff buy-in into the model § Lifeskills assemblies § Spirit Days § Positive reinforcement system § Referral system § Community building activities § Using data to teach social skills § Teaching school expectations explicitly § Using Second Steps curriculum in classrooms

• Consistently increasing student achievement in literacy

§ Factors: Adopting consistent reading and writing curriculum § Using universal assessments three times a year and consistent progress monitoring over time § Flooding in the primary grades § 90 minute reading block § Double dosing reading instruction § Becoming a Targeted Assisted Title I School (more EA time for instruction and student support) § Professional Learning Communities work together to improve instruction and focus on student work § Aligning and articulating grade level expectations in writing § Embedded on-going staff development § Using data to plan for instruction, particularly in reading § Implementing a consistent daily intervention block in each grade level

• Embracing Technology as an Instructional Support

§ Incorporated use of ActivBoard and document cameras to create relevant and engaging lessons § Classes use computer lab on regular basis to enhance student’s knowledge and ability to use

technology § iPods are being used in primary classrooms to enhance reading instruction § Virtual field trips allow students to experience things they are studying

What are your priority concerns? • Sharp increase in math cut scores will heavily impact our achievement • Flat-lining trend in reading and math achievement • Sharp increase in students from low income homes

What areas did you identify needing additional data and analysis? • We need to develop a common assessment in math • We have good writing assessments but need more focus on how to analyze and use the data for teaching • We need to analyze our reading program to see if there are ways to create an upward trend in achievement
