2010 Annual Report

Get Your Rear in Gear events continue to gain significant attention in the media, medical, political and business communities. We have received national news coverage on Fox News, partnered with American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, and made progress in Washington D.C. to get legislation passed for research and treatment programs. On both the local and national level, our investment partners are recognized for their support of this important cause.

Our goals for each event include:

• Maximizing participant numbers through public service announcements, media partnerships and grassroots networking• Marketing efforts that include social media such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube• Developing new incentives for team building to increase fundraising dollars and increase event participation• Event invitations to political, medical and business leaders to increase media attention and awareness

Sincerely,Kristin TaborPresident and FounderGet Your Rear in Gear Events

Get Your Rear in Gear events are the main function of the Colon Cancer Coalition. The races we produce bring people and communities across the United States together to raise awareness and screening rates for colon cancer. Looking back on 2010, I am overwhelmed with what our organization has accomplished. We experienced a near 50-percent increase in the number of races we plan across the country and are on track for a healthy increase in 2011. We haveestablished collaborative relationships between healthcare professionals, patients, government, industry and the media, while enhancing our web and social media presence.

Most importantly, the dedication of our employees, affiliate volunteers, donors and sponsors, the Colon Cancer Coalition increased the number and amount of grants going back into the community.

The Colon Cancer Coalition continues to work to make colon cancer a topic of conversation in every household. We work to put it on public and donor agendas, and build local capacity particularly in areas of the medically underserved where cancer presents a growing challenge to public health. We work in partnership with comprehensive cancer groups across the U.S. to prevent a united front in this work.

We are inspired to act by the memory of those we have lost in the past year, the courage of those still fighting and the commitment of all those who support them. Our mission continues to evolve and expand. With your continued support we will do our best to do as much as we can.

Thank you to our event affiliates, volunteers, donors, sponsors and supporters, who give so freely of time and financial resources to help us continue our mission.

Sincerely,Anne Carlson-DavisExecutive DirectorGet Your Rear in Gear Events

A Letter From Our Executive Director

A Letter From Our Founder

Each of these steps helps us to bring an important message to the community: colon cancer screening saves lives. After each event, 75% of funds raised stay in the community for treatment, education or quality of life programs. In this way, patients, family members, and residents of the community continue to benefit from the Get Your Rear in Gear event throughout the year.

HistoryGet Your Rear in Gear® began as a tribute to Susie Lindquist Mjelde who passed away in 2002 at the age of 46. In 2005, her sister, Kristin Lindquist Tabor, an avid runner, recruited her running club to plan an awareness-building, fundraising race in her memory. That first race attracted over 1,200 people, shattering estimates that the race would draw 500. Six years later, Get Your Rear in Gear has expanded nationally and grown to nearly 40 events nationwide. In 2011, Get Your Rear in Gear events will draw over 30,000 runners and walkers. Since 2005, the organization has raised over $1,000,000 for colon cancer awareness and prevention programs. By making the words colon, colorectal and colonoscopy a part of the everyday language, we believe we can overcome the fear and decrease deaths from this largely preventable cancer.

Brief timeline of Get Your Rear in Gear® events2005 – Original Get Your Rear in Gear event held in Minneapolis. The inaugural Twin Cities event attracts 1,200 participants and raises over $75,000.2006 – Twin Cities event more than doubles to 2,600 participants and raises over $130,000.2007 – The race expands to San Francisco and Austin, Texas.2008 – Five more Get Your Rear in Gear events are added, bringing the total to eight.2009 – Thirteen Get Your Rear in Gear races are held.2010 – Get You Rear in Gear expands to twenty-three races in fifteen states.2011 – Get Your Rear in Gear is on track to host 40 races in twenty-six states.
