On May 14, 2008, DePaul celebrated the opening of the new track and fi eld at Lane Stadium with the inaugural run-ning of the DePaul Relays. The meet marked the fi rst regular-season competi ti on DePaul has hosted in more than 50 years.

The Blue Demons won a total of 15 events at the 2008 DePaul Relays and picked up two NCAA Regional Champion-ship qualifi cati on marks

The facility, located just a short distance away in West Lakeview, is home for not only the DePaul men’s and

women’s outdoor track and fi eld squads, but also serves the football, soccer, lacrosse and track and fi eld teams of Lane Tech High School.

The state-of-the-art stadium features a newly re-surfaced 400-meter six-lane track, stadium lighti ng, and

dedicated space for cages, pits and other ameniti es to allow the Blue Demons to compete in all NCAA sponsored

events including javelin, steeplechase, and pole vault, in additi on to all other throwing, running, and jumping events.

In 2007, fi lmmakers transformed Lane Stadium into Archbold Stadium, the home of the Syracuse Orange football team prior to 1980. The temporary facade was used to fi lm scenes for The Express, a movie chronicling the life and career of Ernie Davis, the fi rst African American to win the Heisman Trophy.

Furthermore, athletics provides the campus community, our urban neighbors in Chicago, and alumni the opportunity for parti cipati on in the form of recreati on, and as spectators for intercollegiate competi ti on.

The Athletic Department also has a unique opportunity and responsibility, as the most visible messenger of the DePaul story, to represent the highest qualiti es and standards of our educati on to an observant community, state, and nation. A clear, positi ve exposure of DePaul University, through athleti cs, can enhance the Uni-versity’s mission and image, and directly eff ect the quality of faculty, enrollment and development.

Not unimportant to our Mission is the emoti on, school spirit and morale, so cru-cial to the soul of the University, that can be uplift ed through parti cipati on in athleti cs.

A member of the DePaul athleti cs community for over four decades, Pat Savage enters his fourth season as head coach for the DePaul men’s and women’s cross country and track and fi eld pro-grams and his fi ft h season as a member of the coaching staff .

Since the beginning, Savage has always put an em-phasis on the complete student-athlete, stressing academics as well as athleti cs. In his fi rst three years as head coach, over 140 of his competi tors earned BIG EAST Conference All-Academic Team honors. On the nati onal level, Melissa Fraser, Mary Cate Quiett and Brad Millar were honored by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Associa-ti on (USTFCCCA) as All-Academic Team members. Both Quiett and Millar earned the honor during the 2007-08 season as well. Additi onally, Millar was

the fi rst student-athlete since the 1995-96 season to be named to ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-District team.

At the team level, both the men’s and women’s track and fi eld and cross country squads were named the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team. While it was a fi rst for the track and fi eld teams, it was the third consecuti ve year cross country was put on the presti gious list. Men’s track and fi eld made a bold statement in its fi rst appearance on the list, posti ng the highest team-grade point average in the enti re country. Within the BIG EAST, both cross country teams and the men’s indoor and outdoor squads boasted the highest GPA compared to their conference counterparts.

On the course the men’s cross country team reached as high No. 14 as in the USTFCCCA Midwest Regional Rankings, while then-freshman Matt hew Graham became the pro-gram’s fi rst BIG EAST Player of the Week in 2008. In 2009, he won all fi ve regular-season races and was the only student-athlete to be awarded Player of the Week twice.

2008-09 marked the second year in a row a Blue Demon competed at the NCAA Nati onal Outdoor Championships. Two-ti me BIG EAST hammer throw champion Millar made his NCAA Nati onals debut aft er placing fourth to earn the automati c bid. The previ-ous season, Melissa Fraser advanced to the NCAA Championships in the javelin throw.

In additi on to Millar and Fraser, Joe Strawder, Alanna Kovacs and Quiett qualifi ed for the 2009 Mideast Regional Championship. While Millar placed fourth in the hammer throw, Kovacs also recorded a top-10 fi nish, placing seventh in the javelin throw competi ti on.

The 2006-07 campaign saw the program make vast improvements in Savage’s fi rst season as head coach. DePaul’s fi rst individual BIG EAST Champion was crowned when Millar won the hammer throw for the fi rst ti me at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. Four Blue Demons competed in the NCAA Outdoor Midwest Regional Championships and 10 new DePaul records were set between the indoor and outdoor track and fi eld seasons. In back-to-back weeks during the outdoor season, the Blue Demons swept the team ti tles at the Chicagoland Championships and the Elmhurst Invitati onal, respecti vely.

Success conti nued during Savage’s second year at the helm of the program in 2007-08. Thirteen school records, a program high, were broken over the course of the indoor and outdoor season. Two more BIG EAST champions were crowned when Millar defended his hammer ti tle, and Fraser won the javelin throw at the Outdoor Conference Champion-ships. Fraser’s appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Nati onal Championships was the fi rst ti me a female student-athlete qualifi ed since 2004 when Erin Moff ett ran the 10,000m, and a fi rst during the Savage era.

Savage has an extensive coaching background in the Chicagoland area, serving as the head cross country and track coach at DePaul Academy (1966-68), St. George High School in Evanston (1968-69) and on the Niles West High School staff in Skokie from 1969-2002. Pat stayed on to coach with his son, Danny Savage, unti l 2005. He was the

head cross country coach during his enti re tenure and spent six of those years on the staff as the head track and fi eld coach in the 1980’s. He also coached the

cross country, track and marathon teams at Oakton Community Col-lege in Des Plaines from 1971-2003. Since 1980, he has served

as the director and head coach of the Niles West/Oakton Runner’s Club. Though he sti ll serves as director, his

wife, Melissa, assumed coaching responsibili-ti es in 2007.

Savage’s teams have also experienced tremendous success during his career as he has tutored 39 National Junior College All-Americans and four NJCAA nati onal champions. In 2002 his team won the NJCAA Nati onal Championship in the marathon. Along with his nati onal success, Savage guided over 200 All-State athletes and 19 Skyway Conference cross country champions while his teams have won eight NJCAA regional ti tles. Savage’s runners club also won 17 Chicago Area Runner’s Associati on team ti tles.

Savage, an eight-ti me NJCAA Region IV Coach of the Year, was elected to the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame in 1989. He has also been named St. Mel’s High School Man of the Year and was inducted into DePaul’s Ath-leti c Hall of Fame in 1993. He has served as the President of the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Associati on, the Illinois Community College Track and Cross Country Coaches Associati on and the Chicago Area Runners Associati on. In 1995, the Niles West Indian Cross Country Invitati onal was renamed the Patrick J. Savage Invitati onal. During the 1980’s and 1990’s it was the largest high school- sponsored cross country meet in the nati on, reaching a peak of 73 boys teams and 69 girls squads.

In additi on to coaching, Savage remains acti ve in the Chicagoland running com-munity. He served as the head race referee for the 2006 and 2007 Chicago Marathon, and head men’s referee in 2008. This year, he serves as a Chairman of the Games Com-mitt ee and will be the course referee.

An outstanding collegiate runner, Savage was a two-ti me captain (junior and senior seasons) and MVP of both the Blue Demon track and cross country teams during his junior year and holds a pair of Business degrees from DePaul. Although far removed from collegiate completi on, he remains an acti ve runner along with his wife Melissa, and recently celebrated his 50th year as a member of the running community.

Coach Savage at Lane Stadium, which now serves as the home track facility for the Blue Demons. The stadium was offi cially opened on May 14, 2008 during the inaugural DePaul Relays, the fi rst home meet the Blue Demons have hosted in over 50 years.

The greatest sprinter in DePaul history, Dave Dopek is in his 15th season as an assistant coach with the Blue Demons. Before beginning his coaching career, Dopek inked his name into the DePaul history books. He became the school’s fi rst individual (or team) to win an NCAA championship when he captured the 200m ti tle at the 1995 NCAA Indoor Championship at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. Dopek also fi nished

second in the 200m at the 1995 outdoor championships. He has helped a number of student-athletes qualify for the BIG EAST

Conference Championships, as well as the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. He guided current graduate assistant coach Stephanie Williams to six school sprinti ng records. Last season, she ti ed Kim Smith’s seven-year-old 60m ti me, while Williams has an outright claim to the indoor 200m, outdoor 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay, and sprint medley school records. He was also instrumental in the career of jumper Joe Strawder. The senior enters his fi nal year as a three-ti me regional qualifi er, and holds the school record in the outdoor triple jump.

During the 2007-08 indoor conference championships, he coached Ryan Moore to a runner-up fi nish in the 400m. Three sprint records were broken during the outdoor season when Williams broke Sheri Bean’s 1987 100m record, improved upon her own 200m record, and the quartet of Williams, Ivy Moff ett , Kyra Coff ey, and Shauna Lurey broke the 4x100m relay record during the Purdue Invitati onal.

Dopek’s success on the nati onal scene conti nued when he won a gold medal in the 200-meter dash and was a member of the ti tle-winning 4x100-meter relay team at the 1995 United States Olympic Festi val.

Dopek has also experienced success on the internati onal level. In 1995, he was on the 4x100-meter relay team that took gold at the World University Games in Fukuoka, Japan. While there, Dopek also took home a silver medal in the 200-meters. The following year he parti cipated in the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials in Atlanta.

During his four years as a student-athlete, Dopek was the staple of the program, winning seven individual Great Midwest Conference championships-- three in the 200m and four in the 400m. He was also a member of the 4x400m relay team that took the outdoor ti tles in 1992 and 1995 and was a part of the 1995 4x100m relay championship squad. For his eff orts, he was named the Outstanding Athlete of the 1995 Great Midwest Conference Outdoor Championships. He also earned DePaul’s Most Valuable Performer in indoor track three ti mes and was the outdoor MVP in 1995.

On Jan. 30, 2010, Dopek was inducted into the DePaul Athleti cs Hall of Fame.

A member of the DePaul coaching staff since 2005, Brandon Murer works with the Blue Demon throwers and contributes extensive experience on all levels to the program.

The last four seasons saw the DePaul throwers ex-perience tremendous success under Murer’s guid-ance. Brad Millar became the fi rst Blue Demon to win a BIG EAST Conference individual ti tle as he won

the hammer throw at the 2007 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. Two more conference champions were crowned in 2008 when Millar success-fully defended his ti tle, and Melissa Fraser became DePaul’s fi rst female BIG EAST Champion for DePaul when she took the javelin throw ti tle. Fra-ser went on to become the fi rst female thrower to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Millar made his fi rst appearance on the nati onal stage during the 2009 season aft er placing fourth in the hammer throw at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship.

In additi on, the Blue Demon throwers set six new DePaul records under Murer’s tutelage while posti ng 14 qualifying marks during the 2009 season alone for the NCAA Regional Championships, culminati ng in a berth to the Nati onal championship.

Murer began his college career at Indiana State, where he was a four-year varsity lett erwinner followed by two seasons with the Sycamores as an assistant coach. As a student assistant in 1997-98, he helped six throwers earn All-Missouri Valley Conference accolades. He also helped guide a ham-mer thrower to a MVC championship.

During the 1999-2000 season, Murer was named a volunteer assistant at Indiana State where he worked with all throwers and multi -event athletes. He helped three student-athletes break school records, 20 meet records and three MVC records. Under Murer’s directi on he developed 18 MVC placers, six all-conference athletes and one All-American weight thrower.

Following his successful collegiate coaching sti nt, Murer was named an assistant coach at Danville Community High School in Indiana. As the throws coach at Danville, he developed the Indiana State High School runner-up in shot put (2000) and several regional and secti onal champions.

Along with his duti es with the program’s throwers, Murer serves as the recruiti ng coordinator.

Murer graduated from Indiana State University in 1997 with a degree in Fine Arts. He currently resides in the Chicago suburbs with his wife, Sa-mantha.

Andrew Craycraft , an accomplished middle-distance runner at St. Joseph’s University and the University of North Carolina, joined the DePaul Ath-leti c staff as an assistant coach for the cross country and track and fi eld teams in 2008. Craycraft assists both squads with recruiti ng and developing middle distance and distance runners. During his freshman and sophomore seasons

at St. Joseph’s, Craycraft set school records in the 800m (1:48.83) and the 4x800m relay (7:25); records which sti ll stand today. He also broke the school record in the 500m when he won the race during the 2002 Intercol-legiate Associati on of Amateur Athletes of America Championship meet. At UNC, he won the 800m with a ti me of 1:52.49 at the 2003 ACC Confer-ence Indoor Championships. His best ti me in the event was 1:48.91, which set a UNC men’s indoor record. Student-athletes at DePaul University are just that: students fi rst and athletes second. Earning a degree is a top priority for every student-athlete at DePaul.

Both the men’s and women’s track and fi eld and cross country squads were named an All-Academic team by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Associati on. Additi onally, the men’s squad boasted the highest overall GPA in the nati on, edging out teams from Brown, Yale, Butler and Harvard. Individually, Melissa Fraser, Mary Cate Quiett and Brad Millar were recognized as a USTFCCCA All-Academic student-athlete.

In DePaul’s fi rst four years of BIG EAST membership, a total of 511 student-athletes were named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. A total of 149 student-athletes were named to the team in 2008-09 aft er 127 had a cumulati ve grade point average of 3.0 or bett er for the recogniti on in 2007-08. Following DePaul’s fi rst BIG EAST campaign in 2005-06, a total of 107 achieved the league academic recogniti on, while 123 were honored in 2006-07

Seven of DePaul’s 15 athleti c programs claimed the BIG EAST Team Excellence Award in 2008-09 for having the top team GPA among the league program’s in each sport. Women’s basketball, men’s cross country, wom-en’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s tennis, men’s indoor and outdoor track and fi eld held the top team GPA among their peers. Individually, Terah Cheatham of women’s cross country, Dunja Antunovic of women’s tennis and men’s golf’s Cory Blenkush were named BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winners in their respecti ve sports. The Scholar-Athlete Sports Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST sport based on academic credenti als, athleti c accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community.

Brad Millar was named to ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-District Team as voted on by memebers of CoSIDA.

In the newest data submitt ed to the NCAA, the commitment of DePaul student-athletes toward graduati on is evident. The Academic Progress Rate (APR) measures both the eligibility and retenti on of student-athletes receiving any level of athleti cs aid. The women’s basketball, women’s tennis, golf and soft ball teams were recognized by the NCAA for their outstanding academic APR performances. Each program was recognized by the NCAA for having multi -year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respecti ve sports. DePaul’s total of four teams honored is ti ed for the fourth-highest total among all BIG EAST schools and improved upon the three teams that picked up the honor a year ago.

This off -the-fi eld success comes from key factors at DePaul. First, DePaul’s academic standards require student-athletes to: complete a minimum of eight hours of placeable credits per quarter a minimum cumulati ve grade-point average of 2.0 meet with athleti c academic advising staff

Despite its growing enrollment, DePaul maintains a small school atmosphere. DePaul boasts an excellent faculty-to-student rati o of 17-1, although classes of 15-25 students are quite common. This provides an ideal setti ng for personal academic att enti on - one of DePaul’s most unique qualiti es.

A student who is not as well prepared may need more help with understanding how to succeed in the college system. Ulti mately, the student makes the decision. DePaul provides a strong academic support system for each student-athlete, but it’s the student’s moti vati on and ability to take the assistance that makes the diff erence. This approach helps students build the decision-making skills they need to succeed in life.

Handling a college sports schedule can be very demanding, but understanding the stress and ti me demands that accompany college athleti cs allows DePaul’s Athleti c Academic Advising department to give each student the support and guidance needed to launch a successful academic career. By working closely with an extensive network of professors, administrators and student-athletes, the advisors insure that each Blue Demon reaches his or her full academic potenti al. The staff personally assists each student-athlete with class selecti on, schedul-ing, tutoring, and, most importantly, establishing good study skills. They also communicate regularly with professors about each student’s course work and maintain records of each student-athlete’s progress toward graduati on. The advisors conti nue assisti ng student-athletes through graduati on, not just unti l their eligibility expires. Their services include tutoring, advising, course selecti on and conducti ng the NCAA Life Skills Program.

To help facilitate the success of student-athletes, Athleti c Academic Advising works closely with the offi ces of Professional Career Development and Placement, Residence Life, University Ministry, Student Financial Aid, Student Life, Student Counseling Services, and the Writi ng Center. At a high-profi le school like DePaul, that’s important.

With 30 years under its belt, The BIG EAST Conference conti nues on a path of success in and out of the athleti c arena. The goals have always been the same. The league wants and expects to compete at the highest level and does so with integrity and sportsmanship. The commendable performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are the indicators of the league’s proud traditi on of success.

Individually in women’s sports, Providence’s Dannett e Doetzel won the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Connecti cut’s Maya Moore was the conference’s sixth winner of the Wade Trophy as the top player in women’s basketball. Notre Dame’s Kerri Hanks won the Hermann Trophy, the top award in women’s soccer.

On the men’s side, Connecti cut and Villanova advanced to the Final Four in basketball. The 2008-09 campaign was arguably the best men’s basketball season in the history of the BIG EAST with the league setti ng NCAA standards with three No. 1 tournament seeds, four teams in the round of the Elite Eight and fi ve in the Sweet 16.

The BIG EAST has conti nued to produce student-athletes who were at the forefront of athleti c and academic achievement. In 2008-09, 19 BIG EAST players were chosen to their respecti ve ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Teams, including eight fi rst-team selecti ons. Nearly 400 student-athletes have earned academic all-America honors.

The BIG EAST became the nati on’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when fi ve new members began competi ng. The new schools were: University of Cincinnati , DePaul University, University of Louisville, Marquett e University and the University of South Florida.

BIG EAST insti tuti ons reside in nine of the nati on’s top 34 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pitt sburgh, Hart-ford, Milwaukee and Cincinnati . With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one fourth of all television households in the U.S.

Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 26 nati onal championships in six diff erent sports and 126 student-athletes have won individual nati onal ti tles.

The BIG EAST has enjoyed tremendous basketball success, especially in this decade. In 2008-09, the BIG EAST produced four of the eight Final Four teams in men’s and women’s basketball. It was only the second ti me in NCAA history that one conference placed that many Final Four teams in the same season.

In 2003-04, Connecti cut became the fi rst school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball ti tles in the same season. In men’s basketball, BIG EAST squads have won three of the last 11 NCAA championships. BIG EAST women’s teams have taken six of the last 10 NCAA ti tles.

The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeti ng of athleti c directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universiti es. Seton Hall, Connecti cut and Boston College completed the original seven school alli-ance.

BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in att endance for the past six years.

More than 550 BIG EAST student-athletes have earned all America recogniti on and dozens have won individual NCAA nati onal championships. The BIG EAST has been well represented in U.S. or foreign nati onal and Olympic teams. Several athletes earned gold medals in each of the last six summer Olympiads. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 athletes.

Brad Millar claimed DePaul’s fi rst BIG EAST individual championship with a fi rst-place fi nish in the hammer throw at the 2007 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Cham-pionships before defending his ti tle with a 2008 championship. In 2009, he was named the runner-up champion as a junior.

Millar earned all-conference accolades aft er placing second in the weight throw and both the 2008 and 2009 indoor championship. Melissa Fraser was fi rst woman to win an individual BIG EAST Championship

track and fi eld ti tle. In 2008 she fi nished fi rst in the javelin throw at the outdoor championships, as well as qualify for the NCAA Nati onal

Championships.

Brad Millar became DePaul’s fi rst Field Athlete of the Week on April 1, 2008.

Mary Cate Quiett was the fi rst female Track Athlete of the Week while Joe Strawder was the second-ever male Field Athlete of the Week. They both claimed the honor on Dec. 8, 2009.

Matt hew Graham was the DePaul Cross Country pro-gram’s fi rst ever BIG EAST Athlete of the Week on Sept. 11, 2008.

The following season Graham made DePaul history by winning every regular-season race and was the

only student-athlete to earn BIG EAST Athlete of the Week honors twice. He placed 14th at the league

championships to be named the fi rst All-BIG EAST Conference selcti on for the Blue
