the fighting falcon volleyball team made significant strides in 2009 by upping the win total by six and securing a winning season for the first time since 2005. the falcons appeared poised for a major breakthrough, but could not come up with enough plays down the stretch that stunted some early season momentum.

it’s that lull that has propelled the falcons in the offseason and has the group determined in a big way. Despite being picked 10th by the conference coaches in the preseason poll, the falcons have their sights set on cracking their way to the upper tier of the conference.

to take the next major step for the program, the program will have to do it without two ma-jor components from a season ago in Micah Bell and Meagan Gibson. Bell was a four-year starter who could do it all for the falcons, while

Gibson led the league in kills a season ago but injuries cut her fairmont State career short.

Despite those losses, veteran falcon head coach larry Hill is confident he has the talent, chemistry and work ethic to meet the expecta-tions of the season.

One of the key returners is sophomore out-side hitter Haley lippert. lippert had 274 kills a season ago and has the right hitter’s mentality to finish plays for the falcons. lippert’s biggest improvement in the offseason has been her play defensively as she’s adjusted to the speed of the game.

another outside hitter who has impressed the coaching staff early on is Bri Swann. Swann comes from the same club team in Cincinnati as lippert and is a strong defensive player. Swann will need to adapt to the college game,

Season Previewbut will likely have a key role for the falcons in 2010.

Senior theresa Zapach has continued to re-fine her skills and increase her volleyball iQ. a starter in the middle last year who led the team in total blocking, she’s continued to hone her tremendous athleticism to be specific to volleyball. freshman amber wilson and sopho-more ava Blennerhassett will be competing for time as the team’s other middle blocker.

Senior aushia Beavers provides tremendous leadership for the falcons and is slated to be a right-side hitter in 2010. Beavers sets the tone for the team with her refusal to give up on any ball and her work ethic on the court and in the weight room. freshman leslie Giordan will provide depth on the right side for the falcons and would see more time if fSU opts to run with two setters as Beavers could serve as a second setter.

Junior Jessica Seevers will be the team’s primary setter. Seevers has played in several different roles for the falcons in her two previ-ous seasons and has nearly 700 assists to her credit. Beavers could also see time as a setter depending on the system the falcons select.

at libero, junior Morgan walls returns after starting in the position the previous two sea-sons. walls, who has 1,135 digs in two seasons for the falcons and is on pace to set the career mark at fSU in that category, has matured into a more vocal presence and has set lofty goals for herself in 2010. Her quickness and desire are significant keys to keeping the falcons in rallies.

the falcons have scheduled aggressively in 2010 to properly challenge the team at every turn. fSU will once again host its “falcon fest” tournament to open the season with the likes of edinboro, Chowan, notre Dame College and Point Park. the falcons then will travel to play in a tournament at Mt. Olive where they will face the hosts in addition to francis Marion, newberry and Millersville. after that the fal-cons will start the meat of its conference schedule and wviaC opponents with several non-conference opponents doting the sched-ule. fairmont State closes the season with back-to-back home matches against wv State and Pitt-Johnstown.

PlayerProfiles

One of the most successful and consistent coaches in volleyball, head coach larry Hill begins his 26th season at the helm of the fairmont State volleyball program. He enters the 2009 season as one of the winningest ac-tive coaches in Division ii history with a career mark of career mark is 539-447.

Coach Hill has led the fairmont State pro-gram since 1984, and has been named wviaC “Coach of the year” four times (1985, 1988, 1990 and 1998), and has led the fighting fal-cons to a winning season 17 times. Coach Hill has also directed fairmont State to at least 20 victories in 15 seasons, including a record 42 wins in 1990. He has guided the fighting fal-cons to four wviaC titles (1998, 1990, 1998 and 1999), and has produced three conference “Players of the year” in Jackie Burks (1988), tracey rowe (1989) and Courtney fochtman (1994).

last season, the falcons fell just one victory short of a 20-win season finishing with a 19-16 mark. Hill coached second team selection Micah Bell, and helped develop Meagan Gib-son into one of the more dominant players in the league as she led the wviaC in kills and kills per game.

two seasons ago, the falcons won 13 matches, and Micah Bell was named to the all-wviaC second team. in 2007, Hill won his 500th career match on Sept. 26, 2007, against Ohio valley. in 2006, Hill led fairmont State to its 16th winning season with a 20-19 record and the team posted an impressive 14-4 record inside the wviaC and advanced to the semifinals of the league tournament. He helped Skinner earn first team all-wviaC honors.

in 1998, Hill was selected as the atlantic re-gion nCaa ii “Coach of the year.” that season, the falcons finished first in the region with a 23-1 record and hosted the regional tourna-

ship team. Hill received his master’s degree from west virginia University in 1968. for the next two years Hill served in the United States army.

He returned to fairmont State in the fall of 1970, and has been a coach and professor in the Division of HHP since that time. Hill also served as the head baseball coach for four years (1980-1983) and enjoyed a tremendous season in 1982 directing a team that went 21-13 (15-3 wviaC) and won the northern Divi-sion Championship of the wviaC.

Hill is married to the former Joyce lynn an-tolini.

ment. another career milestone came on Sept. 12, 2000, as he garnered his 400th career win against Glenville.

Prior to Hill’s becoming the volleyball coach at fairmont, he was as assistant football coach for 13 seasons with the falcons. Born in weston, w.va., Hill attended east fairmont High School, where he participated in football and track and was named all-Big ten and all-Marion County for his play.

Hill then took his athletic talents to fair-mont State, where he was a four-year letter-man in football and was named all-wviaC as a linebacker on the 1967 national champion-

larry hillHead Coach

26th Season

Courtney Materazzi is in her third season as an assistant coach for the fighting falcons. Materazzi is actively involved in all aspects of the falcon program including game day strat-egy and management, practice planning and fundraising activities.

Materazzi helped fairmont State to its most wins since 2005 as the falcons went 19-16, and helped Meagan Gibson and Mi-cah Bell to second team all-wviaC honors.

courtney Materazzi

Assistant CoachThird Year

Gibson led the league in kills and kills per game. in her first season with fSU, Materazzi helped increase the team’s win total from the previous season and Bell was named second team all-wviaC.

Materazzi came to fairmont after a stel-lar career at Cal State Monterey Bay. as a senior for the Otters, she was a team cap-tain and second team all-conference selec-tion. She was also named player of the week during her senior season and was named to the league’s all-academic team. During her career, the volleyball team was twice selected as the women’s team of the year.

She and her husband, Christian, were mar-ried in the summer of 2010.

athletic Director

as a Marion County native and a fairmont State graduate, no one embodies the passion of falcon athletics like rusty elliott. elliott, who has been associated with fairmont State for nearly three decades, was named athletic director in august of 2007.

last season, three fairmont State teams ad-vanced to nCaa Championships in historic fashion. the men’s and women’s basketball teams made it to the nCaa tournament in the same year for the first time in school history, and the softball team earned its first-ever nCaa tournament bid. in ad-dition to the on-field accomplishments, the nCaa released its graduation rate in January 2010 and fairmont State’s student-athletes boasted the top graduation rate of any school in the state of west virginia. in the Spring of 2010, the fSU athletic department was recognized as the wviaC win-ner in the nCaa Division ii’s Community engage-ment initiative for its efforts in the football season opener against Clarion that saw over 5,000 people make their way to Duvall-rosier field.

in 2008, elliott oversaw an athletic department that saw fairmont State finish third in the wviaC President’s Cup. the men’s golf team once again captured a wviaC title and advanced to the nCaa Championships, the men’s basketball team record-ed 20 wins, the softball team set a school record for conference victories and finished runner-up in the league and the baseball team captured the wviaC Central Division championship. in addition to the athletic successes, fairmont State student-athletes had unprecedented success in the classroom as the cumulative GPa for all student-athletes was 2.99. He also oversaw major improvements to the basketball arena with the installation of a state-of-the-art scoreboard and renovations to the feaster Center as fairmont State continues its commit-ment to a superior student-athlete experience.

in his first year as athletic director, fairmont State won a pair of conference championships in women’s basketball and men’s golf, with each of those teams advancing to the nCaa tournament. the football team, playing its first season on a brand-new playing surface, finished with a win-ning record and the men’s basketball team finished with 19 victories.

Athletic directorelliott guided the football program for five years

before accepting the athletic director’s position. in his last season as head football coach he landed six players on the all-wviaC first team – tied for most in the league. the falcons closed the season strong down the stretch, winning three of their last four. in his five seasons, elliott’s players earned first team all-conference honors 29 times.

elliott spent 15 seasons as an assistant coach for the falcons from 1986-2000, spanning the tenures of wally Hood and Doug Sams. in his first two seasons, he served as the wide receivers coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 1988. that season, the falcons were the west vir-ginia intercollegiate athletic Conference (wviaC) champions and advanced to the national associa-tion of intercollegiate athletics (naia) playoffs. He remained offensive coordinator for the next four seasons.

from 1994-2000, elliott coordinated the fal-cons’ defensive and recruiting efforts under Sams. the falcons won two wviaC championships (1996 and 2000) during those seven years. the falcons were conference runners-up in 1986, 1987 and 2005.

elliott served as the skill development coach for rich rodriguez at west virginia University during the 2001 football season before taking over the helm of the fairmont State program in the spring of 2002.

“this is home and this is definitely the place i want to be,” elliott says. “i want to be part of the development of this school, this community and this county. that’s a big part of my life, and i want to make this athletic program and this school a re-ally positive thing for the community.”

elliott also served as a temporary instructor in the School of Health and Human Performance and had done so for 11 years at fairmont State. elliott received his bachelor’s degree from fairmont State in 1979 and obtained his master’s degree from wvU in 1988.

He taught and was an assistant football coach at north Marion High School from 1980 until 1985. He served under head coach roy Michael at north Marion. the Huskies posted a 57-13 re-cord and won the state championship in 1980 and 1981. north Marion finished as the state runner-up in 1982. from 1981-86, elliott was the head wrestling coach at north Marion. His teams posted a record of 73-26 and won five state champion-ships.

He is married to the former Mary Jo thorne, and they are the parents of two daughters, Devan (15), and addie, (5), and two sons, ryan (13), and Kyle (10).
