THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF AKRON CELEBRATES 85 YEARS

The Association of Junior Leagues International commemorated the 85th anniversary of The Junior League of Akron with a plaque. Throughout this league year we will be highlighting our history and our accomplishments. As well, we will be presenting our roadmap into the future as we continue to strive to build a better community here in the greater Akron area.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

The definition of Volunteer is an unpaid worker, one who performs of her own free will. This personifies the ladies in the Junior League of Akron.

Volunteer work has been something I have been exposed to all my life. My parents, Karen and Louis, had always been involved with organizations in the community, from helping children in South Akron, donating clothing and teaching them various tasks working alongside me and my siblings; to the bar auxiliary; to Akron Civic Theatre and the Fairlawn City Women’s Club.

I remember starting to volunteer at various events, like the City of Fairlawn 4th of July parade, more than 25 years ago. I helped the Fairlawn City Women’s club decorate its parade float and later rode on it in the parade wearing a period costume reminiscent of Little House on the Prairie. From being a member of the Girls

Scouts for more than 13 years to working with Special Olympics athletes teaching them how to downhill ski or cheering them on at the state games, I was always working with a community organization throughout my childhood.

Whatever way I could get involved to give back – and whatever way I can – I do. I have to thank my parents for instilling in me a commitment to volunteerism and community involvement. And I have to thank my mom, my late dad and Spencer. Their love, support and guidance give me the ability to continue to volunteer.

When I received an invitation for a Junior League provisional open house 8 years ago, I was absolutely thrilled! To have been so involved with the League over the years has been an amazing and wonderful experience. I have been trained to do so many things that I know I can apply in the various other organizations of which I am a part.

Now, we’re entering the 85th year of this wonderful organization. Our summer was spent with Sustainers and Actives, working together to revamp our strategic documents. We continue this work, and our goal is to create a “roadmap” for the Junior

League of Akron, aligning our direction with the needs of our current membership, as well as AJLI.

As I look forward to the 2010-2011 League year, I am reminded of a quote: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” We have a lot to accomplish this year together to prepare the League for our next 85 years. I really want to focus on training our membership and encouraging all members to utilize all that AJLI offers to us. We’ll have training opportunities as we complete the roadmap, begin researching to identify a new focus project, host ShowHouse Kitchen Tours and celebrate our 85th anniversary. We will do this with a common goal: To build better communities. We will better our community together, as well-trained ladies for a longer-lasting, positive impact.

The Junior League of Akron is proud to announce that the recipient of the 2009-2010 President’s award is Stefani Carlson of Hudson. This highly prestigious award is given to the League member who has shown not only outstanding commitment to the League and to the community, but also has demonstrated a willingness to assume responsibility and take leadership in these roles. This woman is both an exemplary volunteer and a leader; the best a Junior League member can be.

Stefani began her Junior League career with the Junior League Plano, Texas in 2005, joining the Junior League of Akron in 2008. She has served in many Junior League leadership roles along the way, including Board level positions. Stefani has also demonstrated strong community involvement through serving in leadership positions with the PTA and other school-oriented committees, with the Literacy Volunteers of America, with the Friends of the Schoolcraft Cultural Center in New York, the Contra Costa Mother’s Club in California, with the Temple Beth Shalom in Hudson, and with the Hudson Youth Lacrosse Association.

Stefani is a wonderful example of a League member that seeks to impact her community not only through her League service, but directly with the community to effectuate positive change. We are all proud of her accomplishments as a member of our League and we look forward to all of the great work in the community she has yet to accomplish.

PRESIDENT’S AWARD

The Junior League of Akron needs your help to reduce paper waste in landfills. Every day each one of us throws away, on average, one pound of recyclable office waste. This consists of envelopes, copy paper, junk mail, newspapers and magazines. This paper ends up in a landfill, costs your organization money, and is not environmentally

friendly. Help us to protect our natural resources and turn trash into a resource. The Junior League of Akron earns cash for each pound of paper that we

recycle. So, help the League while you are helping to save the environment. Please place the following materials in the blue recycling bins located in the side parking lot of the Junior League house (929 W. Market Street):

• Envelopes• Copy paper• Junk mail• Newspapers• Magazines• White paper

SUSTAINER INSPIRATION AWARDThe President’s Sustainer Inspiration Award is given to a woman who embodies the Junior League of Akron’s mission of empowering women for positive change in the community. The award’s criteria are that it will be given to a Sustainer whose League and community service have inspired other League members, and whose League experience served as a springboard for greater and more effective impact in the community.

It is with great pleasure that we announce this year’s 2010 Sustainer Inspiration award winner, Janice Skromme Alpeter.

A graduate of St Vincent/St Mary, Jan continued her education locally at the University of Akron, and later, for her masters, at Ohio State University. A former French teacher in the Stow/Monroe Falls school district, Jan dedicated many years to the French Club and to the National Honor Society as adviser. In 1984 she won the Outstanding Educator Award, and in 2009 she was inducted into the Stow-Monroe Falls City Schools Wall of Fame for retired teachers that have demonstrated unusually high standards of character, achievement, and respect.

A Junior League of Akron member since her provisional year in 1992, Jan was involved in many aspects of the League, including the Loudspeaker, MarketPlace, Junior Leadership Akron, the Immunization Coalition, and the Oral Health Initiative.

In the years since Jan has continued her involvement in the community, holding leadership positions in the Women’s Auxiliary Board at Stan Hywet, where she has also been recognized for giving more than 1,000 volunteer hours, and with the Women’s Board of Summa Health System. Jan has also been involved coordinating volunteers and more for the United Disabilities Fundraiser, the

Akron FoodBank fundraiser, and for the Crown Point Ecology Center annual fundraiser.

Most recently Jan has been serving the Junior League of Akron as our Membership Development Coordinator, where she has taken a job and truly made it her own. You will find no stronger supporter of our League than Jan, who takes every opportunity as it presents itself to educate and inform members of our community about the work that we do and the impact that we make. Congratulations to Janice Skromme Alpeter, our 2010 Sustainer Inspiration Award winner.

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY HONORS SUSAN FLOWERS, SUSTAINER AND PAST PRESIDENT

At the annual Cattle Baron's Ball on September 25, Susan was recognized for her courage and continuous efforts in the fight against cancer. Susan, a 24 year breast cancer survivor, has celebrated her survivorship by raising funds and awareness for this terrible disease. She used her diagnosis as an opportunity to make a real difference in treatment options for breast cancer survivors by voluntarily participating in a clinical trial to determine the effectiveness of high doses of chemotherapy. Susan has also supported other breast cancer survivors through their journey by serving as a volunteer counselor with the American

Cancer Society's Reach to Recovery Program. Along with supporting the American Cancer Society, Susan lends her time and talents to a host of other community and civic projects. Please join us in congratulating Susan! For more information about the award and ball, visit www.akroncantoncattlebaronsball.org
