CONDITIONS OF CONTEST
i. All rules of the NBCA and TBL will be strictly enforced.
ii. Bandspersons must appear in band uniform. iii. The official entry form must state whether or not competitors require the
official accompanist. If this is not done it will be assumed that the competitors will supply their own accompanist.
iv. Competitors will be permitted to use their own accompanist in any class
provided that the chosen accompanist is available when the competitor is due to perform. Otherwise, the competitor must use an official accompanist.
v. All Own Choice music must be handed to the appropriate official at least
30 minutes prior to the commencement of the class. All bars must be numbered.
vi. Competitors must report to the Contest Co-ordinator at least 20 minutes
before commencement of their class. vii. For all Own Choice music classes, the following time limits will be adhered
to:

viii. Music for Champion of Champions will be Own Choice. Competitors may
use a Test Solo if they wish. ix. If a competitor is entering in more than one class they must play a different
piece of music in each class. x. Only the starting times for the sessions will be provided. Competitors must
ensure that they are available to perform when, and as, required. PLEASE NOTE:
Notification of scratchings assists with the smooth running of the contest.
A novice is a person who has not gained a first place at any NBC, TBL or affiliated solo contest.
Please ensure that any trophies held by you or your band members are returned in good condition on or before the day of the contest.
A competitor may only enter in one novice section.

Junior Champion of Champions
Ben Fixter B.A., B.Ed., L.T.C.L. Victoria After completing a Bachelor of Arts (Music) at the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba in 1995, Ben was employed as an Instrumental Music Instructor at several
schools in Central Queensland for 4 years. He attained his Licentiate Diploma (Performer) on trumpet in 1996. In 1999 he returned to university to complete a post-graduate Bachelor of Education (Primary), after which he chose to pursue a career in the Australian Defence Force (ADF). After serving in Army bands in Sydney, Canberra and Townsville, Ben is now an instructor at the Defence Force School of Music in Melbourne. In February 2010, Ben performed with the ADF contingent at the Royal (Edinburgh) Military Tattoo in Sydney. Ben has been an active member of brass bands since 1985, and during this time has performed duties as a Drill Adjudicator at local, state and national competitions most recently as Associate Drill Adjudicator at the 2010 National Band Championships in Hobart. He also boasts successes as a performer, Musical Director and Drum Major, being awarded the Champion Drum Major award at Nambour (Queensland) in 2003 when he fronted both the Sunnybank bands. Ben has been a member of Rockhampton City Brass, Toowoomba Municipal, Gladstone Municipal, Warringah Concert Brass, Hall Village Brass, and Townsville Brass bands, and is currently playing with Kew Band, who placed second (A Grade) at the 2009 Nationals in Sydney. As well as his full time job as a musician and instructor in the ADF, Ben is the Registrar for the Victorian Bands’ League (VBL) and a member of the VBL Drill Advisory Board.
Peter Quigley B.A. Mus Ed., M.Ed. Studies Tasmania Peter has had a long association with the Tasmanian Bands League and music education in Tasmania. His earliest days of banding started in Launceston with the then
Launceston Boys and Citizens Brass Band, under the direction of Neil Graham. In 1969, Peter won the Australian Junior Champion of Champions on cornet and later went on to further his studies at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music under the tutorage of trumpet teachers Dudley Madden, Don Cushion, Arthur Edwards and Bruce Lamont, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and later, a Master of Education. Since then, Peter has taught in several schools and colleges in Tasmania and has played an influential role in the development of secondary and senior secondary music education in the State as curriculum writer for secondary and senior secondary Music syllabuses, Northern Moderator of year 11/12 Music, State Examiner and critic for Senior Secondary Music and State Music Adviser for years 10-12 music. Peter is currently Head of Performing Arts - Music at Launceston College and the Tasmanian Department of Education’s Esk Primary School Instrumental / Band Program. For the past three years Peter has been Musical Director of the highly successful UTAS/LC Creative Arts Summer School Programs for Concert and Stage Bands, Opera Works and Flamenco and Classical Guitar. Other recent roles include Organising Committee Member for the 2009 ASME Conference, TSO Education Advisory Committee Member and preparation as a state AMEB Brass Examiner.
