At the 2009 URJ Biennial Convention Rabbi Eric Yoffie encouraged all member congregations to start a Temple Blog. The purpose of such a blog could be to discuss Temple events and happenings, Jewish topics, Interfaith topics, and more. Rabbi Yoffie also listed three rules he suggested be used to govern what can be posted and what can not: you need to sign your name; your comments will only be posted if they could be read from the bima on Erev Shabbat; and no one blogger will be permitted to dominate the conversation.

Watch for more information in this bulletin, the website, and e-nouncements as we discuss creating a Temple Blog.

If you have any questions, comments or would like to be a part of the discussion, please send an email to Jeannette Berman [email protected]. Meanwhile, please visit our Temple website at www.bnai-israel.org and join our temple e-nouncements list. If you are on Facebook please search for B’nai Israel Reform Temple and join our group.

Accepted electronic formats are Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, or a simple message in an email. If you are submitting a picture to be considered for inclusion, please make sure that it is a .jpg file. been caught.

On a more pleasant note, I am pleased to announce that Judy and I will be leading B’nai Israel’s 8th Trip to Israel on February 17th of 2011. The trip will last for ten days beginning on the Thursday before President’s Week. We hope this will allow families and teachers to join us. We also want to welcome those who have not previously traveled with us because our trips were during the heat of the summer. February is a nice time to travel to Israel as spring is just beginning.

This will be a wonderful trip as we will begin in Tel Aviv visiting Neot Kedumim, a biblical botanical preserve with hands on activities. We will spend the first three days in Tel Aviv culminating with a very special dinner at Café Kappish. The meal is served by deaf waiters who will teach us sign language during the meal, followed by Na Laga’at, a unique play performed by actors who are both deaf and blind. We will then travel north staying one night in the beautiful city of Haifa and one night on a Kibbutz. We will travel to the Lebanese border, the Golan Heights, Lake Kinneret, and Tzefat. Before entering Jerusalem where the remainder of the tour will be, we will visit the Holocaust Museum Yad VaShem. We will swim in the Dead Sea and go to the top of Massada. This is just a small listing of the places and things we will visit and see.

The cost is $3450 a person for double occupancy per room, with a minimum of 25 to 29 travelers. There is a reduction for Bar/Bat Mitzvah students age 12-13, and a supplemental charge for a single room occupancy. This cost includes air fares on El Al, all transfers, tour admissions, full Israeli breakfasts, five weekday dinners, one weekday lunch and two Shabbat dinners, a luxury coach, and our special guide Amnon Wallenstein.

Israel Travel Connection, our tour agent, requires a fully refundable deposit of $200 per person for our Israel Tour 2011. This deposit will be due by March 14th when representatives of ITC will come to the Temple to meet with us. The remainder is not due until ninety days before the trip, unless it seems that air fares are going up dramatically. The meeting will begin at 7 pm. ITC will allow this to be charged on a credit card or, of course, they will take a check.

I would, however, appreciate all those interested in our trip to please let me know by the end of January. ITC also recommends taking out trip insurance at that time. They offer insurance at $139 per person but travelers can take out their own.

The detailed itinerary will be posted on the Temple’s website as of January 1st.

Those who have traveled with us before discovered that this was truly the trip of a lifetime. Please join us if you can. Come to Israel. Come with friends.

Attention: Items must be submitted on or before January 10, 2009

to be included in the February Bulletin.

If items are received after this date, we cannot guarantee they

will be included.

Please be prompt. Items received after the deadline, may not

be included.

President’s Message                                         Joel Silverman

While it may sound corny, I often refer to our congrega-tion as the B’nai Israel family. I prefer the term “family,” as “congregation” sounds institutional and doesn’t ade-quately reflect the real relationship that I believe exists among us. I had reason recently to recall when that thought first struck me. Some years ago my father passed away well into his 90’s, having outlived pretty much his entire generation. On the first night of Shiva the house filled up wall to wall with my B’nai Israel fam-ily. (I hadn’t anticipated that that would be so important to me, but it was and I remember and appreciate it still!)

And then during these past few months our B’nai Israel family lost an unprecedented number of congregants, several whom I knew well and others hardly or not at all. When Rabbi called to let me know of the most re-cent passing I happened to be in the Temple parking lot. As I stood over a mountain of leaves I had been rak-

ing and reflected on the latest unexpected loss, I real-ized that I was actually grieving the loss of family; not just a congregant, but real family.

B’nai Israel is indeed family, not just in name and not just in bad times either. We are family in lots of ways: We pray, socialize, celebrate, and volunteer together. We support one another in good times and bad. And as in all families, some of us are closer, while others choose to be more distant. Regardless, as part of our family, B’nai Israel is here for you if and when you want or need us to be. While I hope our family shares only good times together, reality says that from time to time some of us will need a shoulder to lean or to cry on.

That’s what real families are all about.

The following are two prayers of thanksgiving written by Jenna Polan and Jared Cohen (two students in our Hebrew School). These prayers were offered, in combination with prayers by students from St. John Nepomucene, St. John Episcopal, and the Selden Mosque, at this year’s Inter-Faith Thanksgiving Service. We wanted to share with the congregation their very thoughtful and sensitive sentiments.

Jenna Polan:

Thank you G-d for my family and friends. My family is crazy, loving, and sweet. I love my friends so much; they are amazing and always hilarious and kind. I am also thankful for my health and that I am so fortunate. Everyone in my family is healthy and we have enough food, money, and clothes. Another thing I am thankful for is dance. Dance is my favorite hobby, sport, and pass time. Dance is fun and awesome. There are a lot of other things I am thankful for but these are the main things. Thank you for everything I have. Amen.

Jared Cohen:

I am thankful for many things. Whether it is my parents, living in a house, having food, or owning a pet, there are a lot of wonderful things that God has given me. In addition, I have something that is very important to me. I am happy that God has given me the intelligence to exceed the normal expectations during school. I do well when being educated and I might be able to go on to bigger and better things later in my life. Failing a test or quiz is something that I never want to happen and I am thankful that I have not failed anything in elementary and middle school. Also, when I am at school, I recite the “Pledge of Allegiance” every morning. This makes me think about the fact that I live in a country with not a lot of fighting or violence. I am also thankful that we have soldiers that protect us and are willing to sacrifice their lives for our country every day. There are many countries that are not as fortunate as we are. There’s a lot more fighting and it’s extremely dangerous. I hope that the United States will continue to be a magnifi-cent country to live in.

Giving Thanks

Adult Education

Bible and Lunch with the Rabbi In response to requests by Temple members, Rabbi Moss will offer a Bible Study Class on Thursday January 7th at noon. Please bring your own lunch, dairy or parve only. Beverage and dessert will be supplied by the Temple. Also, if you have a bible, bring it with you.

Ben/Bat Torah Class Part II If you are enrolled in the Rabbi’s Ben/Bat Torah Program and whether or not you have worked on or completed lessons one and two, you are welcome to attend this class on Thursday night January 28th at 8 pm. Actually, all Temple members are welcome to attend as well. The class will be on: “Jewish History – The Art of Survival.” Lesson three will be distributed that night.

To my friends at B’nai Israel,

Each of you is truly what makes our Temple the special place it has always been and will continue to be. Your kind-ness and comfort is appreciated more than words can express.

My gratitude forever, Roberta Snair and family

It is not often that I have felt the need during the last seven months to place an article in the bulletin to update the congregation on the physical condition of B’nai Israel’s buildings and grounds. However, because one of the most common complaints that I have heard during this time has to do with the sound in the sanctuary, I thought I should let you know where we are in improving it.

When the sanctuary was renovated about eight years ago, some things were done to improve the quality of the sound. Because our building was not constructed for acoustics, we continue to be limited in what we can do. We installed a new sound system and have lived with the ups and downs of that system. I am sure that we all remember the first High Holy days when the system failed. During the last High Holy Days, we actually caused a speaker to blow out, leading us to have the system evaluated by two separate sound companies. Both had similar opinions.

We have now added a new piece of equipment that will not only increase the volume of the sound that the system puts out but will also protect the system from blowing more speakers and automatically reduce feedback. In addition, with a very minor adjustment and some ingenuity, we were finally able to get the microphone inside the Ark to work. There is still some work to do but I hope that when you come to services you find them more enjoyable with the improved sound already in place.

I also would like to take this time to thank Mike Lambert for climbing on the roof of the Temple and replacing one of the lamp sockets on the Chanukiah. As always, if you have any questions or see something around the building that needs fixing please contact me via e-mail at [email protected] or call the Temple office at (631) 563-1660.

Message from the presidents...

Happy 2010…..We hope that you had a wonderful Holiday Season. We look forward to our 2010 programming. Relax, release the stress from the past and enjoy a night out with the girls. This month’s meeting on January 19th will be an evening with Rabbi Moss. ‘Healing in the Jewish Tradition: the Function of Prayer, Meditation and Community". As a special friend to Sisterhood, Rabbi Moss always brings a special message of inspiration and interest to our meetings. We are looking forward to seeing all of you in January!

This meeting should not be missed by anyone!

The first part of our evening will be devoted to a workshop entitled "Survivors' Information." Do you know where all the important papers are in your house and your parents' house? Better yet, do the spouses, children, or heirs know? Martha Kolodkin has developed an easy step-by-step way to prepare this information to be passed on to survivors or caretakers. In fact, with this organization strategy in place, you will be so relaxed that you'll probably survive everyone!!!

The second part of our evening will be devoted to Eldercare information, questions, and concerns. Our guest will be an expert in the field of all types of insurance. We can use this info for aging parents, for ourselves, and surely this will even benefit long term planning for our adult children.

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, February 23rd at 7:30. We'll have the hot chocolate and marshmallows waiting!

Purim Carnival     February 28, 2010     12:00 pm

Games     Fun   Food   and more!

Page 12: 2010_01_TempleBulletin

So, how well did you do last month? Were you able to identify the various holidays and events as shown on our stained glass windows? Of course, depending upon where you sit, you will have a better and longer time to view one set over the other. Humans are territorial after all, so they tend to go to the same seat where they sat before. Isn’t that what you always do wherever you go?

We’ll start on the left for no reason other than that the left is the side we see first when entering the Sanctuary.

The eight candles on the Menorah is a dead give-away; we can place a check next to Chanukah pretty easily. There is a bit of a challenge on the bottom of that first window because that scroll suggests two possibilities. It is showing the Magilla that is read on the holiday of Purim.

Everyone recognizes the Ten Commandments, but does everyone know that the holiday is Shavous? The bottom of that window takes a bit of thought because one is not sure what the picture is showing. Those are waves and they indicate the parting of the Red Sea by Moses, told to us during the holiday of Passover.

We all know the dove of peace, and what day is most peaceful if not the Sabbath. Beneath the dove is a representation of Havdalah, the closing service for the Sabbath.

Know Your Temple…

It’s time to move ourselves to the other side of the Sanctuary. For half the weekly participants, this may be the first time you venture to that area. Our first window is entirely for the Sabbath. The Sabbath Candles and the Challah bread on the bottom remind us of the worship, home life, and family concepts of the Sabbath.

Did you figure out the symbols of Succos on the top of that middle window? Those are the lulav and etrog used in the service. The bottom should be a bit easier as we can see the Torah and it cannot be anything but Simchas Torah.

Probably, this last one was universal and all of you got it right away. The Shofar pretty well clinches it as Rosh Hashanah. Even if you were not certain about those scales of justice, logic alone suggests that if the top is Rosh Hashanah……. the bottom must be Yom Kippur.

So there you have it. We have completed our walk through the holidays and their symbols and we see our Sanctuary with more informed eyes. Wasn’t it a fun journey?

Donations Donations benefit your Temple and the people it serves in many ways - helping the Temple to meet its day-to-day obligations and to reach its long-term goals, helping the religious school and its students, aiding and bringing joy to people, and supporting other good works.

While any donation is a mitzvah, giving is also a wonderful way to commemorate joyous occasions and to honor loved ones. Your gifts also inspire others to give.

How to Donate: You can bring or mail a check identifying the intended fund to the Temple. You can also arrange to provide larger donations in installments. Please contact the Temple office if you have any questions. (631) 563-1660 or email [email protected]

My Own Endowment Fund?  The Temple welcomes larger donations that establish endowment funds in accordance with donor wishes. An endowment provides the Temple with long-term benefits that you specify. Endowments are publicized and often grow by attracting additional donations from others. You may name your endowment fund in honor or in memory of someone special. Please call the Temple Office at 563-1660 for further information.

Sustaining the Temple

The General Fund supports the Temple’s day-to-day operations. This fund helps the Temple meet its most immediate needs.

The Building Fund enables capital improvements such as renovations and new construction. The Temple will publish a brochure that describes desirable improvements.

The Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund adds to an account that the Rabbi uses for educational, charitable, and other expenses of his choosing.

Adding Natural Beauty

The Landscaping Fund helps maintain and improve the appearance of the Temple’s grounds.

Flower Arrangement donations help provide the lovely floral displays we see at High Holy Days and other times.

 Involving Our Youth

The Youth Group Fund supports young people’s activities such as social events, educational programs, and day trips.

Honoring Memory  You can establish a memorial fund to perpetuate the memory of a loved one. Others often donate to the fund to honor the named person or the person’s family. A memorial fund can be started with a minimum donation of $1000. There are currently three memorial funds.

• The Ian Matarasso Memorial Fund

• The Ethan William Snair Memorial Fund

• The Sidney Sonkin Memorial Fund

Donations

Remembering Life Events  J o y o u s o c c a s i o n s c a n b e commemorated by an engraved leaf on our Tree of Life in the Temple lobby. A donation for a leaf is $90 for Temple members and $108 for non-Temple members.

Any occasion can be commemorated by an engraved plaque on the Honorial-Memorial Board in the Temple lobby or in the school building, as appropriate. These donations begin at $500.

A memorial plaque in the sanctuary will assure that a loved one’s name will always be mentioned for Kaddish. The donation is $200 for Temple members and $300 for non-Temple members.

A prayer book can be dedicated to commemorate an occasion or to honor someone special. An acknowledgement is placed on the book’s inside front cover. The donation is $36.

Any occasion can be commemorated by an inscribed plaque in an attractive new arrangement of donor plaques of various sizes to be placed in the Temple lobby. These donations begin at $1000.

Promoting the School  The Religious School Fund enhances educational programs and helps defray school operating costs. The Library Fund supports purchase of books, periodicals, and equipment. The Scholarship Fund provides assistance for those unable to pay the entire cost of tuition.

Adding to the Experience  The Fine Arts Fund helps purchase permanent artwork and Judaica, silver and other ritual items for services, decorations for the Temple and the school building, and other aesthetic improvements

Sharing Music

The Music Fund supports choir expenses and the Children’s Choir, and also helps provide special music programs such as the Jazz Shabbat and presentations by visiting performers.

Aiding the Community  The Outreach Program helps provide food and other necessities for those in need. The Help-a-Family Program gives financial aid to Temple members with hardships. You can direct your donation to help a specific family and remain anonymous if you wish. The Shiva Fund sends a platter to a house in mourning. You can direct your donation to help a specific family regardless of Temple affiliation.
